Areas and Goals of Language Teaching

Lesson 2

English as a Learning Area- Elementary

Course Descriptiion

English as a subject is concerned with

developing competence in listening, speaking, reading, viewing and writings

Listening

Is an information- processing act. It includes skills in auditory discrimination and cognitive comprehension.

Speaking

includes skills in using the language expressions and grammatical structures correctly in oral communication

Reading

is getting meaning from the printed page. It includes skills for vocabulary development , levels of comprehension, literary appreciation and study skills.

Writing

it includes writing readiness skills, guided writing, functional and creative writing

learning activities to develop competence in these phases of communication should be varied, meaningful, and realistic.

science and health concepts may be used as content in English especially for Grade 1 & 2, but not to the extent of neglecting the content in the English books for the grade.

Grade 3 is considered the threshold in reading. Thus at the end of the third grade, every child is expected to be a reader

Expectations/ Goals in English

Grade 1

Expected to recognize differences in speech sounds, words stress, intonation patters in sentences heard; speak clearly and use appropriate expressions in talking about oneself and immediate environment; read comfortably beginners book in English and write legibly information about oneself, common words and simple sentences in manuscript form.

Grade II

• Expected to listen critically to 1-2 paragraphs• Use appropriate expressions in varied

situations and about places and topics of interest.

• Read critically and fluently • Respond properly

Grade III

• Listen attentively• Demonstrate independence• Read with comprehension

Grade IV

• Listen critically to news• Express ideas logically• Demonstrate more independence• Read independently for pleasure• Get information from various text types

Grade V

• Listen critically to different text types• Express ideas logically• Demonstrate interest in reading to meet one’s

various needs

Grade VI

• Listen critically• Observe proper behavior• Communicate one’s feelings and ideas• Read fiction and non-fiction• Heeds in meeting a wide range of life’s

purposes.

FILIPINO- ELEMENTARY

Lumilinang sa mga kasanayan sa pakikinig, pagsasalita, pagbasa, pagsulat at pag-iisip sa Filipino.

Konsepto ng Sibika at Kultutra ang nilalaman ng Filipino sa Una –Ikatlong Baitang.

• Nakapagpapahayag• Nakapagbibigay ng matalinhagang salita• Nakakalahok sa ibat ibang talakayan• Nakagagamit ng matalinhagang salita• Nag-uugnay sa sanhi at bunga• Nakikilala ang iba’t ibang bahagi ng babasahin

• Nakakapagsasalaysay ang mag-aaral• Nagbibigay ng sariling palagay• Nakakabasa at naipaliliwanag ang kahulugan• Natutukoy ang pagkakaiba ng ideya at

katotohanan• Nakababasa ng mga pagunawa• Naisusulat ang mga idiniktang iba’t ibang anyo
