Kelly Stanley (left) and Shannon Porter (right) of the Montgomery County Animal Care and Adoption Center were happy to accept our donation of canned dog food and non-clumping cat litter in July! Thank you to Sharon Brown, Fran Hart, Vicki Adamson, and Christine Fulmer for donating these items!
The Center is currently in need of the following: Paper Towels, Sanitizing Wipes (Lysol, Clorox, generic brands, etc.),
Hand Sanitizer, Cat Litter, and Purina Small Bites dog food.
RSVP is accepting these items throughout the month of September. Please bring your donation to our office by
Monday, September 30.
Patriot Day - September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance
RSVP is partnering with the Christiansburg/Montgomery TRIAD S.A.L.T. Council, Town of Christiansburg, Christiansburg Recreation Center, Montgomery County Parks and Recreation, and Warm Hearth Village to provide a breakfast for first responders on Wednesday, September 11th. We need your help! We would like to provide as many cards as possible to all EMS, Police, Fire, and National Guard departments in our service area. There is a collection box in the RSVP Activity Room. Please drop off your cards by Monday, September 9th.

Volunteer Opportunities RSVP will host a Walk-A-Thon on Thursday, October10 from10-12 at the Christiansburg Recreation Center to benefit the 12th Annual Supplies for Seniors program. Michael Barber, Mayor of Christiansburg, will lead the first lap of our Walk-A-Thon at 10:15 am. Participants are encouraged to form teams this year to increase participation! The instructions and sponsor sheets are included in this newsletter. A minimum pre-registration of $5 is required and forms can be completed at RSVP. You may walk and obtain sponsors or sponsor someone else to walk. All participants will receive a goody bag and lunch will be provided by the Christiansburg Recreation Center. All proceeds will go to purchase basic household and personal care items for approximately 150 homebound seniors and veterans. If you have any questions, please call the office. We hope to see you there!
Fall Harvest Celebration
The Meadowbrook Public Library will hold its Fall Harvest Celebration on Saturday, October 5 from 10 am to 2 pm. There will be music, vendors, hayrides, and food available! Volunteers are needed to bake cakes and brownies to support the library and we are still collecting plastic bags and hats to donate towards their fall craft.
Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program (MCEAP) Thrift Store
Volunteers are needed on Fridays at the MCEAP Thrift Store and More to move boxes and to assist with item pickup. Item pickup requires driving a truck and the ability to lift objects. Volunteers are also needed to help sort donations at the store on Saturdays. For more information, call RSVP.
Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity of the New River Valley is asking for volunteers to help out in the ReStore. The ReStore sells new and gently used furniture, appliances, home goods, building materials and many other items that help fund Habitat for Humanity’s building projects throughout the NRV. Volunteers are needed to help run the cash register, assist customers in finding what they need, stock store shelves, organize the ReStore, and move lightweight furniture.
Additionally, Habitat for Humanity of the NRV recently broke ground on their largest construction project to date. It will include seven townhouses in downtown Blacksburg and volunteers will be needed as soon as late October/early November.

Montgomery County Christmas Store - Grandparents Corner
The Christmas Store is currently accepting donations of clear storage bags (see picture) to be used to store Lego sets for children. Many people donate plastic trash bags of Legos with nothing to put them in, and this will make the items more attractive for grandparents to give to their grandchild for Christmas. Please bring your donations to the RSVP office by September 30.

Carilion NRV Medical Center
You are invited to a Volunteer Information Session at Carilion NRV Medical Center, 2900 Lamb Circle, Christiansburg, on Tuesday, September 10 from 10-11 am in the New River Room. Questions? Call Julia Dill, Manger, Guest and Volunteer Services at (540) 731-2428. Refreshments will be served.
Crafting with Christiansburg Library Join Linda Spivey, Outreach Coordinator at the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library, in the RSVP Activity Room on Monday, September16 at 10:00 am and make a paper Ball jar centerpiece to hold paper flowers . She will assist you while making the craft shown in the photo. Registration is required. Please sign up by Friday, September 13 to participate.
Fall Raffles
Tickets are available through December 6th for the RSVP Golf Raffle. 5 winners will be drawn/ 2 golf courses per winner. Tickets are $10 each. You can win gift certificates for green fees and cart fees for 4 players at 10 local courses. The drawing for this raffle will be held at the RSVP Holiday Party.
A Family Movie Night Raffle is currently underway! 1 winner will receive a gift certificate for a Specialty Pizza at Domino's, 4 bottles of soda, 4 boxes of candy, and 2 movies (DVSs). Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. The winner will be chosen on October 5, 2019 during the Fall Harvest Festival at Meadowbrook Library.
Details to come in October 2019 about the Gift Card Galore and More Raffle! The RSVP Fundraising Committee has currently raised over $1,300 in gift cards and services for this amazing raffle! Tickets will be available in October and the drawing will take place during the RSVP Holiday Party.

Community Events Lifelong Learning Institute at Virginia Tech
LLI is a member-driven, volunteer organization that offers a program of courses, lectures, and events drawing on the wealth of academic and community resources in the NRV to provide intellectual, cultural, and social experiences for curious adults 50 and older. No prerequisites or eligibility requirements - no tests or grades, just great conversations and new experiences shared with others! There are over 25 courses to choose from, free special events and lectures, and endless opportunities to learn. Fall 2019 registration is underway! Senior Wellness University
LewisGale Hospital and Warm Hearth Village are partnering to provide a series of relevant educational programs for seniors from throughout the New River Valley. Understanding Cholesterol and Hypertension is the topic being discussed on Tuesday, September 17 at 3:00 pm at Warm Hearth Village Center. The discussion will be presented by Matt Bowles, PA-C. We are teaming up with Pizza Inn on Wednesday, September 18 from 5-8 pm for a fundraising event to benefit our scholarship program, programs for veterans, the holiday tote bag project, and other community outreach projects administered by RSVP. We hope to see you around the buffet!
RSVP Annual Bake Sale
The Bake Sale will be held on Tuesday, October 1 from 8 am to 2 pm at the Montgomery County Government Center and your delicious baked items are needed to support the RSVP Scholarship Program. We need your donations of homemade goodies (bread, cookies, cakes, cupcakes, party mix, brownies, pies, snacks, desserts, etc. If possible, please individually wrap everything in clear or colored cellophane or tie them off with ribbons or twist ties. The prettier the presentation, the better they will sell! You may drop your donation off at the RSVP office on Monday, September 30 by noon. As always, monetary donations are welcome. Volunteers are also needed the day of the sale. Call the office for more details.

12th Annual Supplies for Seniors Walk-A-Thon 2019:
RSVP of Montgomery County & Radford, Christiansburg Parks & Recreation, AARP, and Carilion NRV Medical Center are co-sponsoring a Walk-A-Thon on
Thursday, October 10 from 10- 12.
How to participate:
Anyone can register to walk. We will be walking on the track at the Christiansburg Recreation Center.
You can walk whatever length of time or distance you wish. One lap around the track equals 1/8 mile.
Come by or call the RSVP office to complete a registration form and sign a waiver. A minimum pre-registration of $5 is required. You may also register at the event.
Ask everyone you know (family, neighbors, church members, etc.) to sponsor you to walk. Participants are encouraged to form teams to help raise money, and keep members walking while others take a break!
Use the sponsor sheet on the reverse side of this page to list your sponsor(s) and their donation(s).
Collect money as you go and turn in the day of the event. Please have your sponsor(s) make their checks out to RSVP.
The money you collect will be used to purchase supplies for 150 homebound seniors, and veterans such as; toiletries, detergent, word search puzzles, etc. RSVP volunteers and local Police will distribute supplies to clients of the NRV Agency on Aging, Radford Fairlawn Daily Bread, and the Virginia Veteran and Family Support Project.
Bring donations of supplies to the RSVP office, the Christiansburg Recreation Center, or The Village Center at Warm Hearth Village by November 30.
Rest stations, snacks, and water will be available. Christiansburg Parks & Recreation will provide lunch for registered participants.
Have fun, enjoy the exercise, and support a worthy cause!
