As the exciting new season rolls in, we are delighted to deliver our all-new program guide for
this year including a dazzling array of holiday programs, lectures, workshops and events custom-
made for you and our ever-expanding synagogue services and lively community Shabbat.
When creating the Chabad-Lubavitch movement that you see today (4,000 emissaries all
over the world, and counting), the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of righteous
memory, was motivated by his profound love for every Jew. Chabad Houses all over the world
follow the central teaching of the Lubavitcher Rebbe- that all Jews are really one soul. This is
evident at any one of our programs. At Chabad of Northern Palm Beach Island, you will always
meet Jews from all walks of life. Because we don’t see labels, we see souls.
You can be a part of our good work by supporting Chabad of Northern Palm Beach Island;
a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Your contribution goes a long way toward establishing a
strong, proud Jewish community in Palm Beach where no Jew is forgotten.
Our online presence is strong and updated regularly at palmbeachjewish.com so you can easily
find services and programs that you may not see in these pages. Or call us at 561-659-3884.
We look forward to greeting you.
Wishing you and yours a sweet and prosperous New Year!
Warmly,
Dear Friend,

HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS
ROSH HASHANAH OF CHASSIDUS FARBRENGENSATURDAY NIGHT, DECEMBER 1 | 7:15 PM
Farbrengen: (Yiddish) (a) an assemblage addressed
by a Rebbe; (b) an informal gathering of Chassidim
characterized by soulful singing, sharing, and
discussion.
We welcome singer and guitarist Rabbi Ruvi New of
Chabad of East Boca who will lead our community
farbrengen celebrating Yud Tes Kislev, the 19th day of
Kislev on the Jewish calendar, the date that the founder of Chabad Chassidism,
Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi (1745–1812), was freed from his imprisonment
in czarist Russia. The nineteenth of Kislev, therefore, also marks the Rosh
Hashanah- the birth- of Chassidism: the point at which it was allowed to emerge
from the womb of mysticism into the light of day, where it has grown and
developed into an integral part of Torah and Jewish life. Festive dinner will be
served. Kindly reserve. Suggested donation: $18

TU B’SHEVAT SEDERSATURDAY, JANUARY 26 | 12:30 PMTu B’Shevat, the 15th of Shevat on the Jewish calendar, marks the New Year for Trees. This
is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their
winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. We mark the day by eating fruit, particularly
from the kinds singled out by the Torah in its praise of the bounty of the Holy Land: grapes,
figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. On this day we remember that “man is a tree of the
field” (Deuteronomy 20:19) and reflect on the lessons we can derive from that. Following
Shabbat morning services, join us for an enhanced kiddush lunch. Kindly reserve.
PURIM NIGHT GRAGGER CONTESTSATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23 | 7:15 PMIt is a mitzvah to hear the Megillah twice on
Purim. Once at night, when according to
the Jewish calendar the new day begins,
and once on Purim day. Rejoice on Purim
night with Megillah reading and a bagels and
lox buffet, followed by the grand Gragger
Contest! Come with your most creative
gragger (noisemaker), be it your alarm clock,
pots and pans, or your two feet (you probably
won’t win), and win a prize. Kindly reserve.
PURIM IN THE SHTETLSUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24 | 5:00 PMOy kinderlach, vus vilstu fuhn mir? What,
you want some good Jewish music? Why
didn’t you just ask? At Chabad’s Purim party,
following the reading of the Megillah, enjoy the
lively klezmer band, a feast of good ole’ shtetl cooking just
like your bubbeh used to make. Then use a feather and ink
to inscribe your name on parchment and pose for a photo in
the shtetl. Participate in the four mitzvot of Purim.
Dress up like you’re right out of the shtetl (think Fiddler on the Roof) and enter a raffle to
win a prize. Kindly reserve. $36 per adult, $15 per child (2-12)

LAG B’OMER BBQSUNDAY, APRIL 28 | 4:00 PMLag B’Omer is the anniversary of the passing of the
great sage of the Talmud, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai,
author of the Zohar (fundamental text of Kabbalah).
Minutes before his death, Rabbi Shimon instructed his
disciples not to mourn him but to mark the date of his
passing as a day of joy, honoring and celebrating his
accomplishments.
Also, in the weeks between Passover and Shavuot, a
plague (brought on by lack of respect for one another) raged amongst
the disciples of the great sage Rabbi Akiva and on Lag B’Omer, the
plague ended. To celebrate, join us for an outdoor barbecue sizzling
with great food, crafts and entertainment. Kindly reserve.
$10 per person, $25 per family
SHAVUOT
Spiritually speaking, milk is to a child as Torah is to
a Jew. It gives life. Practically speaking, when the
Jews received the Torah, they had not yet studied
the laws of separating milk and meat, so to be safe
they ate only dairy. Therefore, when we celebrate the
receiving of the Torah it is customary to eat dairy. Join
us for the reading of the Ten Commandments and a
melt-in-your-mouth dairy meal complete with blintzes,
cheesecake, ice cream and more! Kindly reserve.

and see how it will profoundly affect your life.
After our regular Shabbat dinner, stay and sing
Chassidic melodies and drink l’chaims in honor of
the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel
Schneerson, of righteous memory, who passed
away on Gimmel Tammuz, the 3rd of Tammuz

OCTOBER MEETING:LOVE AND OTHER IMPOSSIBLE PURSUITS by Ayelet Waldman
Emilia Greenleaf believed that she had found her soul mate. But life seems a lot less rosy when Emilia has to deal with the most neurotic and sheltered five-year-old in New York City: her new stepson William. Now Emilia finds herself trying to flag down taxis with a giant, industrial-strength car seat, looking for perfect strawberry-flavored lactose-free cupcakes – and attempting to find balance in a new family that’s both larger, and smaller, than she bargained for.
SEPTEMBER MEETING:START-UP NATION: THE STORY OF ISRAEL’S ECONOMIC MIRACLE by Dan Senor and Saul Singer
Start-Up Nation addresses the trillion dollar question: How is it that Israel-- surrounded by enemies, in a constant state of war since its founding, with no natural resources-- produces more start-up companies than large, peaceful, and stable nations like Japan, China, India, Korea, Canada and the UK? As America reboots its own economy and can-do spirit, there’s never been a better time to look at this remarkable and resilient nation for some impressive, surprising clues.
NOVEMBER MEETING:THE MIDWIFE OF VENICE by Roberta Rich
Hannah Levi is renowned throughout Venice for her talent at coaxing reluctant babies from their mothers’ wombs — a gift aided by the secret “birthing spoons” she has designed. But when a count implores her to attend to his wife, who has been laboring for days to give birth to their firstborn son, Hannah is torn. A Papal edict forbids Jews from rendering medical treatment to Christians, but the payment he offers is enough to ransom her beloved husband Isaac who has been captured at sea.

NEXT YEAR IN JERUSALEMSEVEN REASONS TO SUPPORT ISRAELTHURSDAY, MARCH 14, 2013Many people love their homes and their
countries, but once they relocate, they form new
allegiances. They cannot trace the ancestral
homeland that their families claimed two
millennia ago, nor do they continue to long for
those places. Yet no matter where they have
lived, Jews have continued to dream about the
Land of Israel. Why? Enjoy a more meaningful
Passover and find out why Israel is different,
from popular radio personality Joyce Kaufman.
Joyce Kaufman hosts her own talk show on 850 AM every
weekday from 10 am to 1 pm. Joyce is an activist who
passionately supports Israel, war veterans and other worthy
causes. Born in New York City to a Jewish father and Puerto
Rican mother, she earned her degree in special education
and a Master’s in social work. She worked with schizophrenic
adults as well as autistic children and in 1978, moved to
Florida where she raised her children and has been doing
radio with phenomenal success for 21 years.
HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL EVENINGWEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, 2013Celebrate the indomitable spirit of our precious Holocaust survivors. Join us for the honor of hearing Alan Wainberg describe the two long years that he hid in a farm in a small town called Zelechow, located between Warsaw and Lublin, and what happened to his sister and aunt when they were found by Polish Jew-haters. Mr. Wainberg recalls Jews being
murdered even after liberation, and finally, he remembers his transport to freedom along with other small children. Mr. Wainberg currently resides in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Meet him in person and watch a heartwarming video presentation and enjoy a lovely buffet dinner and an array of desserts.
DEBUNKING THE MYTHSSECRETS OF THE CHASSIDIC LIFESTYLE, UNCOVERED WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2012 Religious people want sons instead of daughters.
Women are forbidden to study Kabbalah and Talmud.
You can’t look good if you dress modestly.
Nobody can raise that many children properly.
Ultra-Orthodox marriages are arranged, so there’s no love. It is
racist to say that Jews are G-d’s chosen people. Jews should be forgiving of people who
sin; after all, we all sin sometimes. Truth or myth? Find out at last.
Tall and athletic, Rishe Deitsch leaves a trail of stunned women behind her as she effortlessly keeps a perfect
home and raises beautifully groomed children and grandchildren. She cooks three-course dinners every night while
reciting Psalms from memory and practicing the multiplication tables with her ten-year-old granddaughter. She
volunteers at the local nursing home, hospital, and animal shelter, and the floor under her refrigerator is spotless.
Nah, not true. I’m 53 years old, short, and wondering when I gained ten pounds. I have served as editor of the
Chabad international women’s magazine for 30 years. I am a homebirth activist with a goal of educating women to
be their own best advocates and avoid needless suffering. I am the mother of Hindel Levitin and I only clean under
my fridge once a year, right before Passover.
