Ft. Zumwalt East Canvas Page
The best way for us to reach each student is through
our Canvas page. We have one Canvas page for all
things Counseling. We encourage students to refer to
this page often, and check their emails!
Parents can be observers on their students’ Canvas
page. Instructions on becoming an observer within
your student’s Canvas pages can be found on the Ft.
Zumwalt East website, HERE, under the News/What’s
New tab, “Information about Canvas”. The video at
the bottom of the page gives exact steps on becoming
a Canvas observer.
Students wanting to meet with their counselor should
make an appointment. Appointments can be made
HERE, or through the Canvas page, FZE website, or
by scanning the QR codes outside of the counseling
office.
Advanced Placement (AP) vs. College Credit
What is the difference between a college credit class and an AP class?
College credit classes are taught by East High teachers who have been certified by the colleges that
are offering the credit. College credit classes are offered through the University of Missouri-St. Louis,
Missouri Baptist University, St. Louis University and Drury University. When you choose to take a
college credit class, you pay the cooperating university at the beginning of the semester, approximately
$68 per credit hour. The college will award credit for any grade C or higher and a transcript will be
available from that university. When a student graduates, he/she will request the college transcript to
be sent from the cooperating college to the college they plan to attend.
AP classes are taught by teachers that have been certified by CollegeBoard. The classes have a
comprehensive, rigorous test at the end of the school year, which cost approximately $100 per test.
The student will send an official report of their score(s) from CollegeBoard to the college they are
attending. The score required to obtain credit from the college that a student plans to attend can vary.
Several of our classes offer both options, college credit and AP. Students can choose to take
advantage of one or both options.
Students are NOT REQUIRED to participate in either the college credit or AP options for any of the
eligible classes. Any student can take the class and will receive the weighted grade on their East High
transcript.
If a student elects to take advantage of college credit or AP, it is the student’s responsibility to listen to
the informational presentations and meet all registration deadlines.
More information on AP/College Credit can be found HERE.
By taking advantage of college credit classes and AP classes, you can greatly reduce the overall cost
of attending a 4-year university. Tuition at public universities in Missouri averages $280 per credit hour
and tuition at private universities in Missouri can cost from $760 to $1300 per credit hour.
Teacher/Counselor Recommendations:
Students, please allow two weeks notice when requesting a
recommendation letter from your teacher or counselor. Do NOT
ask for a last minute letter of recommendation! Many teachers
use their personal time to write these letters. Be courteous and
let them know you appreciate their effort.
College Applications
To apply to a college or
university, find the “Apply”
link of the website. After
you have applied online,
please stop by the Coun-
selors office to fill out a
Transcript Request form.
We will then mail a copy
of your transcript to the
college. (Students under
the age of 18 need a par-
ent signature).
Colleges require your
official high school tran-
script to be sent from
your high school. A col-
lege cannot process your
application without it.
Net Price Calculator
All undergraduate insti-tutions that award fed-eral title IV financial aid are required to offer a net price calculator. Net Price is the amount that a student pays to attend an institution in a single academic year AFTER subtracting scholarships and grants the student re-ceives. You can use this tool to get an esti-mate of cost.

LOCKER SIGNS
The Counseling Department is proud of any
student that gets accepted into college, trade
school, military, or apprenticeship program!
Let us “shout it out”!!
Stop by the Counseling office and tell us where you’ve been accepted and we’ll make a
sign for you and post it on the 4th or 5th floor lockers. Parents, you can contact us too,
and give us the good news! (636) 477-2481 or email at: pfulhorst@fz.k12.mo.us
Juniors: Class of 2023:
Juniors should begin their college and career search now. Begin by meeting with
college representatives that visit Ft. Zumwalt East High, attend college fairs, and/
or visit college campuses. November 2 is a great time to plan a college visit, as
FZE students are off of school that day. You should also be researching admission
requirements and scholarship programs for each school you are considering. Take
and retake the ACT test, and talk to your counselor about plans after high school.
Three questions that you should consider when picking a college:
1. Does it have your major or field of study?
2. Can you afford it? (How much debt will you graduate with?)
3. Do you like the school? (Can you see yourself living on the campus, or
attending the school?)
IMPORTANT INFO FOR PARENTS: We are required by Federal law to provide lists to
military recruiters of our junior and senior students. We will provide students’ name, address and
phone number (unless the number is unlisted). If you do not want this information given, you
must submit a request in writing to your students’ school counselor by September 30,
2021. Additionally, if for any reason you have a problem with a military recruiter or you feel your
student is being unduly pursued, please don’t hesitate to let us know.
SELECTIVE SERVICE (Males only) DID YOU KNOW? The law requires virtually all male U.S.
Citizens and male immigrants residing in the U.S. (permanent resident aliens), to register within
30 days of their 18th birthday. By neglecting to do so, you could be denied student loans,
government jobs and possibly your driver’s license. For more information, click HERE.

COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID (FAFSA) PLANNING WORKSHOPS
Ft. Zumwalt South High Tuesday, October 5 at 7:00 p.m.-Auditorium
Ft. Zumwalt East High Wednesday, October 6 at 6:30 p.m.-Auditorium
Ft. Zumwalt North High Tuesday, October 12 at 6:00 p.m.-Auditorium
Ft. Zumwalt West High Wednesday, October 13 at 6:30 p.m.-Auditorium
Students planning to attend college in the fall of 2022 may file their FAFSA application as early at Oct. 1, using
their 2020 tax statement. You must complete and submit the FAFSA to apply for federal student aid for college
or career schools and for most state and institutional aid. If you are using you’re A+ benefits, you MUST file
the FAFSA. You apply online at www.fafsa.gov, or click HERE.
College Financial aid offices use information from the FAFSA to determine if your are eligible to receive federal
student aid from grants, loans and work-study programs. States and schools also use the information from the
FAFSA to determine if you qualify for additional aid. Be sure to fill out a FAFSA even if you think you won’t
qualify for federal aid.
Seniors and their guardians are encouraged to attend one of the above workshops. Juniors are also wel-
come to attend, although students who are juniors will not fill out the FAFSA until senior year.
Where can I find information on Scholarships?
In the FZE Counseling Office…
A list of scholarship opportunities is maintained in the Counseling Office. This list is updated regularly and can be
found on the Counseling link of the FZE website, HERE, as well as on the Ft. Zumwalt East Counseling Canvas
page.
At your college...
Visit with the Financial Aid representatives from the colleges you are researching. They will be able to direct you
to the scholarships available at their institutions. Also, check with specific departments at the college to see if
they have department scholarships available.
At your parents’ employer…
Many companies offer scholarships to children of their employees. Have your parents ask their employers if they
offer scholarships to graduating seniors.
On college/scholarship search databases…
There are many online scholarship databases. Some are local, such as StLouisGraduates.org, most are national.
Refer to the Counseling Master Scholarship List for a few of the online databases. These database names are
located near the top of the Master Scholarship List. Be aware that when you are applying to national databases,
you are competing with students from all over the United States when you apply for their scholarships. We
suggest creating a separate email account for scholarship applications and when registering with a database.
This will alleviate your personal email from being overloaded with scholarship opportunities.
Senior Year To-Do’s:
1.Follow the FZE Counseling Canvas Page and check the your
emails often!
2.Take/re-take the ACT/SAT by December, if desired.
3.Visit college campuses before applying (if possible). Remember, Nov. 2 is a great day to visit!
4.Apply to schools you are considering – be aware of each school's deadline for scholarship eligi-
bility.
5.Establish a contact person at each school you are considering, typically this is an admissions
counselor.
6.FILE YOUR FAFSA! You can do this starting October 1 each year.
7.Visit the websites of colleges to which you are applying to investigate other potential scholarship
opportunities (Departmental, Presidential, Competitive, etc.)
8.Review FZE’s Master Scholarship List; pay attention to application deadlines!
9.Narrow choices to a few schools, but always have more than one choice.
10.Monitor your email for any correspondence from colleges and respond promptly. Once you
receive an acceptance letter, please notify Mrs. Fulhorst in the Counseling office so she can make
you a locker sign.
11.Consider financial aid offers and notify colleges if you are accepting, or not accepting their offer.
12.Once you have made your college decision, fill out a Final Transcript Release Form and return
it to the Counseling office. (spring, 2022)
13.Contact Missouri Baptist, UMSL, Drury and/or SLU to request your college credit transcripts be
sent to the college you are attending in the fall.
14.Confirm your AP scores have been sent to college you are attending in the fall.
Seniors, it’s not too late to register for the ACT test that will be held during the school day
on Tuesday, October 5, 2021. The Oct. 5 ACT test will be at a reduced rate of $48, which
is less expensive than a national test at $60. Also, students will test at school, on a Tues-
day, alleviating the need to wake up early on a Saturday morning.
To register, please email Mrs. Mahan at jmahan@fz.k12.mo.us or Ms. Vaughn at avaughn@fz.k12.mo.us
