South Africa has a long tradition of preserving historical narrative, and reflecting cultural heritage, through the beautiful medium of ceramics. The Corobrik National Ceramics Biennale is therefore particularly important for the ongoing development of ceramic art in Southern Africa. It not only brings together artists in open discourse on di�erent techniques for the mastering of art through the medium of ceramics, but importantly seeks to explore and push the bounderies of this age-old art form.

Corobrik has played a large role in the cultural and artistic development of the Ceramic Arts through a long and fruitful collaboration with Ceramics SA. Every two years a National Exhibition is hosted in Cape Town, Pretoria or Johannesburg. For these events, an interna-tional ceramic artist is invited to South Africa to be the award judge and to give workshops around the country. Among these have been Janet Mansfield and Janet de Boos from Australia, Je� Oestreich from the U.S.A. and Daphne Corregan from France.

This year, the selected pieces were judged by British celebrity ceramicist, Kate Malone, recognisable from her role as an expert judge on the BBC series ‘The Great Pottery Throw Down’. Malone chose Paul de Jongh’s “Koi Playing” anagama fired platter as this year’s Premier Award piece.
