Containment – the key to effi cient cooling
Data centers that rely on simple hot/cold aisle methods over-cool
nearly 2.5 times to compensate for the mixing of hot and cold air.
• New server designs exhaust air in excess of 140˚F leading to
very hot aisles and challenging working conditions
• On average, 60% of available cooling is wasted due to bypass
and re-circulation airfl ow
• Air is supplied well below ASHRAE temp limits to address hot air
contamination and attempt to control temperature at rack intake
• Despite gross over-cooling, 10% of racks experience hot spots
Without heat containment, hot air mixes with cold leading to gross over-cooling.
Reference: ASHRAE Journal Article - Designing Better Data Centers, 12/07
EPA - Uptime Institute conference material
Studies show 250% over-cooling required when hot air is uncontrolled.
The Value of containment cooling
By containing and directing heat, the Geist cooling method
maximizes effi ciency while easily maintaining an ideal temperature
throughout the data center.
• Contains and evacuates 100% of the heat - no heat mixing with
the cooling simplifi es the cooling circuit
• Heat exhaust direct from the cabinets eliminates cool air bypass
• Maximizes chiller plant effi ciency with highest possible return air
temperatures
• Expertly manufactured chimneys and rack enclosures eliminate
makeshift solutions like vinyl plastic sheeting
• Maintains a perfectly controlled and consistent IT environment
Stabilize IT intake air temperature to within a few degrees of the supply air temperature
at all points in the data center. Full heat return - cool air bypass eliminated.
Geist manufactured chimneys and enclosures capture hot air and expel it beyond the
cold air surrounding the cabinet rows.
Containment Cooling
Maximize IT density and lower operating costs by relentlessly
controlling hot air; automated feedback cuts total fan energy 40%.
Active Cabinet or Row Containment MethodGeist’s cooling philosophy centers on two critical components
1) containing heat, 2) expelling heat directly to the CRAC units.
This two-step focus maintains the ideal temperature for data
center equipment. The first step is addressed by Geist’s expertly
manufactured chimneys and enclosures. The second step relies
on sophisticated temperature and pressure sensors to control
fan speeds and exhaust hot air through the chimneys at the
most efficient rate. The combination of hot air containment and
intelligently controlled fan speed creates a consistent climate
controlled environment in the data center and within the cabinet
rows.
• Hot aisle/cold aisle layout eliminated
- With hot air contained, data center room becomes a comfort
aisle for ideal working conditions
- Eliminates hot air mixing, wrap around heating and hot spots
- Bypass eliminated, 100% use of cooled air
• No row based cooling units to take up fl oor space
• Complete hot air separation enables highest CRAC/CRAH return
air temperatures
• Actively balances return air fl ow with cabinet supply requirements
• Eliminates raised fl oor pressure balancing issues
• Suitable for slab or raised-fl oor environments
• 1:1 air fl ow balance makes cooling over-provision unnecessary
• Allows for more densely populated cabinets
With hot air contained, data center room maintains a “comfort” temperature for working conditions. Hot air separation enables highest CRAC/CRAH return air temperatures.
Sophisticated temperature and pressure sensors control redundant fan
speeds to exhaust hot air through the chimneys at the most efficient rate. Plug and play fan units make for easy installation and maintenance.

Common PlenumWith Geist’s customizable cooling components, a common air
plenum can be created across multiple cabinets. The common
plenum then allows multiple Geist cooling units to work in
concert by utilizing the IP network. This approach provides
scalability as required and lowers the total cost of deployment.
Plenum components allow Geist cooling units to be installed
every 6 inches. This fl exible system placement avoids overhead
obstructions such as cable trays.
Load Sharing• Multiple systems work together to share cabinet loads
• Operational redundancy increases as systems work in concert
• In the event of utility failure, heat continues to be exhausted by
the Geist cooling unit connected to your UPS
Automated Control• Automated load balancing eliminates micromanaging airfl ow
requirements
• Automatic notifi cation of system threshold breach via email or SNMP
• Environmental conditions monitored and reported automatically
• Geist’s Environet software aggregates total air fl ow load and automates
defi ning total air fl ow requirements, allowing lowered air fl ow across the
data center, saving 40% fan energy.
Scalable Capacity• System capacity automatically scales as loads are added or removed
• Automated load sharing returns all heat directly to return air plenum
• High density loads can be directly coupled for single cabinet isolation
• Load sharing leads to lower cost per deployed kW, allowing all fans
to run at energy effi cient speeds

A common air plenum across cabinets allows multiple Geist cooling units to work in
concert utilizing the IP network to communicate as one unit. Optional placement of
Geist cooling units, avoids overhead obstructions such as cable trays.

Passive Containment
Headline needed ----------------------------------
With the Geist passive containment option, every cabinet can
be appropriately controlled. Low density cabinets can take
advantage of the passive chimney system but can be easily
upgraded as they mature and loads begin to increase. Our
solution grows and adjusts to the data center’s needs. You can
feel confi dent that you are not limiting your cabinet’s capacity due
to reaching the limits of the passive option.
To maintain proper air fl ow and prevent air recirculation, Geist
offers a variety of cabinet blanking panels. A rack without
proper blanking panels can result in thermal damage due to
improper cooling as well as excessive energy consumption
and an increased carbon footprint. Each Geist blanking panel
is engineered with an overlapping lip for an improved seal to
prevent hot air from escaping to the front of the cabinet.
Blanking Panels Block unnecessary mixing of hot and cold air.

Network Switch Cooling
Geist’s switch cooling product line allows network switches to
breathe cool air regardless of where they are mounted in the rack.
Mounting switches in the back of the cabinet does allow for more
convenient cabling connections. The trade-off is that the switch is
fed air that has already been pre-heated by the servers.
The Geist network switch cooling products are available in a wide
range of confi gurations and rack space sizes. Designed to work
with 1U to 9U devices and beyond, having the ability to channel
air to every kind of intake / exhaust confi guration imaginable such
as side in - rear out, front in - side out, rear in - front out. Geist’s network switch cooling units move cool air from the cabinet front
to the rear mounted switches to eliminate heat related switch failures.
NETWORK SWITCH
2 BUILT IN FANS
Designed to eliminate compounded heating of intake air for
Cisco 6509 and Nexus 7018 switches that are arranged in a
row layout, the GSA9 directs the hot air into the hot aisle where it
can be properly handled. With no active components, the GSA9
unit elegantly redirects the heated air away from the systems that
depend on a cool air supply to run reliably and effi ciently. This
