Need of wind energy

Present energy need heavily relies on the conventional sources.

But the limited availability and steady increase in the price of

conventional sources has shifted the focus toward renewable

sources of energy.

Of the available alternative sources of energy, wind energy is

considered to be one of the proven technologies.

wind energy conversion system (WECS) is nowadays

deployed for meeting both grid-connected and stand-alone

load demands.

Many stand alone loads are powered by renewable source

of energy.

INTRODUCTION

Operating principle

• Wind turbine operate on a simple principle. The

energy in the wind turns the blades around a rotor.

The rotor is connected to the main shaft which spins a

generator to create electricity

Turbine ranges

• Small turbines, below 100 KW used forHomesTelecommunication dishesWater pumping

• Turbine range in 100KW to as large as several MW. large wind turbines are group together into wind farms, which provide bulk power to the electrical grid.

Wind power is currently being used extensively in countries like

The main components of a wind turbine can be classified as

TOWER NBB TOWER• It is the most expensive element of the wind

turbine system.• Towers are constructed with steel or concrete.• Cheaper and smaller towers may be

supported by guy wires.• The tower should be designed to withstand

gravity and wind loads.

Consumption• Wind Energy is Free• Small Footprint• Industrial & Domestic

Installations

• Remote Power Solution• Wind Technology

Becoming Cheaper• Low Maintenance• Job Creation

DISADVANTAGES• The Wind Fluctuates

• Installation is Expensive

• Threat to Wild life

• Noise Pollution

APPLICATIONS Applications of wind energy can be used for

small households, national networks.

It is accepted in a wide range of uses because it is renewable, so it is mostly accepted over coal and fossil fuels.

CONCLUSION However, wind flow by nature is not continuous.

In order to meet the load requirement at all instances, suitable storage technology is used as backup

To rectify the random characteristics of wind flow the WECS is interfaced with the load by suitable controllers.
