2011hasindeedprovedtobeachallengingyearforIBBYinAustralia.AmajorstepwastakenatourAGMheldonthe2ndApril,
inSydney,NSWwhenwepassedourConstitutionenablingustobecomeanincorporatedbody,anessentialstepinlegalizing
andformalizingourworkinthiscountry.Technologyhasassistedourcommunicationsoverthisvastcontinent,withemail,
threeelectronicnewslettersandthefirstteleconferenceofourcommittee,facilitatingbeingintouchwithoneanotherandbuild-
ingasenseofcommunityandcommitment.
Threefundraisersthisyearhavecontributedtothepaymentofourannuallevy,the2012HCAndersenAwardnominationfees
andpostagecosts.WearepleasedtohavenominatedwriterChristobelMattingley,AMandillustrator,BobGraham.Currently
wedonotreceiveanygovernmentsupport,sofundraisersandincreasingourmembershipbasehavebeenessentialtomeet
ourIBBYcommitments.
InternationalChildren’sBookDay(ICBD)wascelebratedinSydneywithpresentationsbyNadiaWheatleyandJeannieBaker
andhonouringDrMauriceSaxbywithLifeMembership,aDinnerinFremantle,WAwherereadersandwritersspokeabouttheir
favouritechildhoodpoem,lunchesinTasmaniainbothHobartandLaunceston,andstorytellerBettinaNisseninspiringschool
childrenataQueenslandstateschool.
Athrillforallinthechildren’sliteraturenetworkinAustraliawasShaunTanwinninganOscarfortheshortanimatedfilmThe
LostThingandalsothe2011AstridLindgrenMemorialAward.Shaun’sinternationalsuccesshasdelightedusandwelook
forwardtohiskeynoteaddressatthe2012LondonIBBYCongress.

CambodiawasacceptedasaNationalSectionofIBBYinAprilthisyear,followingtheExecutiveCommitteemeetingatthe
BolognaBookfair.WewouldliketothanktheECandIBBYforacceptingourapplication,LizPageforherassistanceaswe
preparedtheapplication,andtheIBBYsectionsandmembersfromaroundtheworldwhohavesentmessagesofsupport.In
particular,wewouldliketothankIBBYSwedenwhogenerouslysponsoredourmembership.
OurinstitutionalmembersarelocalpublishersandinternationalNGOsandourindividualmembersincludewriters,illustrators,
editors,lecturers,teachers,andotherprofessions.Wehaveformedacommitteeofvolunteerstoorganizeandmanagetheac-
tivitiesofIBBYCambodia.ThefirstofwhichwastonominatetitlestotheIBBYHonorList2012inthecategoriesofauthorand
illustrator.WearedelightedthatCambodianproducedandpublishedbookswillberepresentedinthisinternationalcollection.
TheselectionprocesshasalsobeenaninterestingexperimentforIBBYCambodiaasthisisthefirsttimethishasbeenunder-
takenwithchildren’sbooksinCambodia.Wearecurrentlydiscussingideasforhowtopromotetheshortlistedbookslocally,
andtousethisasanopportunitytoraiseawarenessofqualitystandardsinproducingchildren’sbooks.
IBBYCambodiaisalsopreparingforourfirstevent,aworkshoptobeheldinearly2012.Theworkshopistargetedatpeople
workinginproducingchildren’sbooks,orinvolvedinrelatedfields,andwehopewillintroduceIBBYCambodiatoawideraudi-
ence.Wealsoaimtodiscusssomeoftheissuescurrentlyaffectingpublishersandothersinvolvedwithcreatingandproducing
booksinordertogetfeedbackonareasofinterestwhichIBBYCambodiacouldtargetinfutureactivities.
IBBYCambodiaisalsolookingforwardtofutureopportunitiestocommunicateandcollaboratewithourIBBYcolleaguesinthe
regionandaroundtheworld.

Shanghai Book Fair
TheShanghaiBookFairwasheld inShanghaiExhibitionCenter inAugust.Coveringanareaof22,000squaremeters, the
Shanghaibookfairfeaturedapproximately500publishersfromalloverChinapresentingover150,000titles.TheFairisagreat
festivalofbooksandprovidesafeastofreadingforbooklovers.
Aspecialhallisdedicatedtochildren’sbook,andthereisalsoaInternationalChildren’sBookCarnivalfollowedbyavarietyof
readingpromotionevents.Unusually,agreatnumberoforiginalbooksintheEnglishlanguagewereexhibitedandsold.Sir.
MoritzNeugebauerfromtheConsulateGeneralofGermanyinShanghai,executivecommitteememberofIBBYMr.Mingzhou
ZhangandchiefeditorfromPopularSciencePressMr.YanShi
wereinvitedasspecialgueststogivespeechesatthelaunch
of a German series detective book for children “Kugelblitz
Kommissar”, namely Detective Lightening Ball by Schneiner
Press,Germany.
National Children’s Book Fair (Shenyang City)
In September, the national children’s book fair was held in
Shenyang,capitalcityofLiaoningProvinceinthenortheastern
partofChina.Around15,000booksfrom33professionalchil-
dren’spublishinghouseswerepresented.Titlesincludedearly
childhoodeducation,popularscienceforteenagers,children’s
literature, cartoonandanimations, half ofwhichwere newly
publishedthisyear.PresidentofCBBYMr.HaiFeicompleted
thevarietyofbooksondisplay,andcommentedonrecentpub-
lishingtrends.

National Children’s Book Summit & International Children’s Book Fair (Shenzhen)
SeptemberalsobroughttheNationalChildren’sBookSummitwhichwasheldinShenzhenChildren’sLibrary.Thiswaslargest
summitforthecountry’slibrarysystemandprovidesaforumtostudyhowtoservetheneedsofyoungpeoplebetter.Approxi-
mately90children’slibrariesfromaroundthecountrywererepresented.Theaudiencealsoincludedchildren’sbooksreading
promoters,children’sliteraturewritersandrepresentativesfrommorethan30publishinghouses.
Duringthesametime,InternationalChildren’sBookFairwasalsoheldintheShenzhenChildren’sLibrary.Thefairpresented
morethan500,000titlesofbooksforchildrenrangingfrom0-18yearsold.Thematerialsanddocumentswerenotonlyfrom
domesticPressbutalsofrompublishersaroundtheworld.Theaimoftheeventistointroduceexcellentinternationalchildren’s
bookstotheChinesereader.Theorganizershopethatonedaytheatmosphereandsignificanceof thefairmightequalthe
FrankfortBookFairinGermanyandtheBolognaChildren’sBookFairinItaly.
Reading Promotion Lecture-“Let the Popular Science Reading Be a Fashion” in Shenzhen
InSeptember,thechiefeditorofPopularSciencePressMr.YanShiwasinvitedtoShenzhenNanshanSchoolAffiliatedwith
ChinaNationalInstituteforEducationalResearchtogivealecturetotheir5thand6thgradestudents,titled“LetPopularSci-
enceReadingBeaFashion”.Duringthelecture,editorYanShifirstlygaveanoverviewintroductionoftheworldpopularsci-
encereadingamongchildren,thenshowedthestudentsanimationsaboutpopularscienceandreadingpromotion..Healso
gavesomerecommendationstothestudentsofoutstandingoriginallocalpublicationsandimportedfromabroad.

AWICisorganizingtheInternationalConferenceonBookTherapy,tobeheldfromFebruary9to112012inNewDelhi,India.
Thisconferenceisapioneeringefforttopresentadifferentdimensiontoreading,usingbooksasameanstohealchildrenaf-
fectedbytraumainitsvariousforms.
TheConferencehasbeendesignedinresponsetoworldwideconcernovertheimpactofviolenceandpsycho-socialtraumas
onthegrowthofchildren.Participantswilldeliberateuponthetherapeuticaspectofliteratureandtheimpactofchildren’sbooks
onthevictimsofnaturalcatastrophesandman-madedisasters.BookTherapyisconsideredtohavepotentialforfar-reaching
impactsuponthementalhealthandall-roundpersonalitydevelopmentofchildren.
BookTherapyalsocultivatesreadinginterests,instillspositivevaluesandbuildsahopeforfuture.
TheVarioussessionsandthemesoftheConferencewillinclude:

onefromHiroshimamuseum,oneofbooksforchildrenwithspecialneeds,andathirdexhibitionofpicturebooks.Therewillalso
beaninteractivesessionforchildrenbyarenownedillustratorunderthethemeof‘ArtforHealing’.
Workshops on Book therapy
TwoworkshopsonbooktherapyhavealreadybeenconductedwiththeobjectivesofcreatingawarenessaboutBook-Therapy,
itsapplicationandbenefits,andprovidingtraininganddemonstrationintheuseofBook-Therapy.Participantswereteachers,
educationists,psychiatristlibrariansandNGOs.
Boththeworkshopswerewellappreciatedbytheparticipants.Intheendsomeofthesituationsweredramatizedbythemem-
bers.

Thisyear,IBBYIndonesiaorganizedmanyactivitiestopromotereadingandqualitypicturebooksinIndonesia,includingfour
importanteventswewouldparticularlyliketonote.InFebruarywevisitedagaintheearthquakeandtsunamiaffectedareasin
PariamanandMentawaiIslandsinWestSumatraProvince.IncooperationandsupportedbyIBBY,wedonatedmorethan200
booksfor14schoolsinMentawaiIslandsandstorytellingdevicesfor21earlychildhoodeducationcentres.Eachcentrealso
received31books.Thisprogramisacontinuationofourpreviousvisit.
INABBYhasalsofocusedattentiononchildrenwithspecialneeds.IncooperationandsupportedbyDutchIBBYwedonated
storytellingdevices,suchaswallhanging—fingerandhandpuppets—toasmallschoolinJimbaranarea,Bali.Theschoolpro-
videseducationforhyperactiveandautisticchildren,andchildrenwithconcentrationandhearingproblems,from3upto13
yearsold.TheylookedhappyandenthusiastictobeinvolvedinstorytellingactivitiesgivenbyINABBYvolunteers.
INIBBYhasalsoprioritizedtrainingsandworkshopsforyoungillustratorsandstudentsofschoolsofdesign,communication,
andvisualartsinproducingqualitypicturebooks.OnMay23rd-24th,weorganizedatwodayseminarandworkshopentitled
“GoInternationalthroughPictureBooks”.Theaimoftheworkshopwastoequipwriters,illustrators,editors,andalsopublishers
withabroaderviewaboutinternationalpicturebooksandhowtoproducegoodqualitypicturebooks.PatsyAldana,previous
IBBYPresident,wasthemainguestspeaker.OtherprominentspeakerswereDr.MurtiBunanta,andthreeseniorillustrators:
Suyadi,HardiyonoandIsnaeniM.H.Morethan110participantsattendedtheevent.

Historical Exhibition on Iranian Childhood Culture
Ahistoricalexhibitionon theChildhoodCultureandEducationof IranianChildrenwaspresentedat theHosseiniehErshad
PublicLibraryfromOct.9to17.OrganizedTheInstituteforResearchontheHistoryofChildren’sLiteratureinIran(IRHCLI),the
exhibitiondisplayedhistoricaldocumentsandobjectsrelatingtochildrenandchildhoodfrom1904to1970gatheredbythethe
IRHCLIduringitsresearch.Launched15yearsagotoconductfundamentalstudiesonthelife,culture,andliteratureofIranian
children,theIRHCLIhaspublisheda10-volumereferencebookonthehistoryofchildren’sliteratureinIran.Theexhibitionin-

cludedphotos,books,toys,costumesandeducationalmediumandtools.
Morethan2,000schoolchildren,rangingfrompreschoolerstohighschoolers,visitedtheexhibitioninadditiontohundreds
ofadults.Theworksondisplaywereenthusiastically receivedbychildren,giving themopportunity to reflectofdifferences
betweenthegenerationsandthedefinitionofhistory.Visitorswereabletoexplorethelifestyles,educationsystems,andpas-
timesofpreviouserasthroughtheexhibition.
TheInstitutelooksforwardtothedaywhenanationalmuseumreflectingthelivesofIranianchildrenthroughouthistorywillbe
launched.

byGaryCrew)isincludedinthePictureBooksforPeaceandTolerancecollectioncreatedbytheMunichInternationalYouth
Library.Tan’sshortfilm,The Lost Thing,basedonhisbookofthesametitle,wontheBestAnimatedShortawardintheFebruary
2011AcademyAwards(U.S.).ItwasTan’sfirstvisittoJapan,and350fansofallagespackedthehalltoviewtheprize-winning
filmandhearhistalk.
“Books for Tomorrow“ Project for Children
Launchedincollaborationwiththreeotherorganizations,the“BooksforTomorrow”projectsupportsthechildrenoftheTohoku
regionaffectedbytheMarch11earthquakeandtsunamidisasterthroughthemediumofbooks.Activitieshaveincludedreno-
vatinganoldbookmobile,which,stockedwithabout2,000booksforchildren,hasmadetheroundsofthedisaster-struckarea.
TheProjectalsosupportsthebuildingofalibraryforchildrentoopeninthecityofRikuzenTakada,Iwateprefecture.

Reading Workshop for Children with Overseas Roots
ThisprojectwasdesignedforchildrenrecentlyarrivedinJapanfromothercountries,studyingJapanese,orwithnon-Japanese
languageandculturalheritages.Byhavingthechildrenreadaloudpoemsandshortstoriesinsmallgroups,JBBYmembersand
universitystudentvolunteerssoughttointroducethechildrentothepleasuresofworkingtogetherandcommunicatingwithoth-
ers.OnOctober10,about20childrenofFukushimaprefecturefromChina,Thailand,Afghanistan,theUnitedStates,andother
countries,whohavebeenunabletoplayoutdoorsbecauseofhighlevelsofradiationintheair,wentbybuswiththeirparents
toneighboringYamagataprefecture.Theyparticipatedinpracticesessionsandthenpresentedtheirreadingsastheirparents
watched.The“BooksforTomorrow”bookmobiletooktimeoutfromitstouroftheTohokudisaster-affectedregiontobringthe
childrengiftbookstocommemoratetheevent.

Living Libraries
Thecorepurposeofthisprojectistoestablishasustainableandeffectivemodellibraryset-upallowingschool-goingandout
ofschoolchildrenaccesstoawidevarietyofbooksaswellascreatinganenablingenvironmentforinculcatingreadinghabits
amongchildren.Weexpectinteresteddonorsandsponsorswillbeencouragedtosetupanetworkofsimilarlibrariesacross
thecountry.Thisgoalwillbeattainedthroughthefollowingobjectives:
1. Establishmentofapermanentlibraryinaschoolinacentrallylocatedsemi-ruralareaofDistrictSheikhupuracatering
toaclusterofschools(atleastfour).
2. Settingupamobilelibrarytoprovideservicestochildreninschoolsandcommunitiesfurtheraway,visitingtwoschools
daily20-25daysamonth,total40-45schoolspermonth.
3. Ayearlongrobustcampaignforchangingbehaviorofchildrenandcommunitiestowardsreading,booksandlibraries
throughpromotionalactivities.
4. Atleast25meetingswithstateandnon-statestakeholdersforcreatingasupportiveenvironmenttoareadingculture.
5. Trainingofatleast30teachersincluding8to10teachersofthoseschoolswheregovernmenthasprovidedlibrariesbut
librarianshavenotbeentrainedtoinculcatereadingskills.
6. Planninganddevelopingaspecialtrainingcourseandlibrarymanualthatiseasytoaccessandcontainslotsofideas
onbookrelatedactivities.
The Story Teller Bus
AlifLailaBookBusSocietyistaking‘Dastaangou’,theStory
Tellerbustohospitalstospreadthejoyofreadingtochildren
confinedtothehospitalbed.AtShaukatKhanumMemorial
TrustHospitalLahore,astorytellingsession/puppetshow
wasarrangedforchildren,followedbyanartactivityadmin-
isteredundercarefulsupervisionofplaytherapists.Thechil-
drenwereeager to takepart in theactivityandthoroughly
enjoyedthemselves.
Libraries for Madrassas
Thisproject introducesa readingprogram infive targetedmadarisaimedatdevelopinga largerunderstandingofdifferent
culturesandpeopleanddemonstratingthejoythatreadingcanbringinordertodeveloplifelongreadersandlearners.Library
materialsarebeingprovidedinfiveselectedmadaris.Alibraryschedulewillbefollowedallowingchildrenofallclassessome
regulartimeforreadingaswellasborrowingbooks.
Abaselinesurveyinthetargetmadaris,ongoingmonitoringoflibraries,andsupporttoteachersandstudentswillensurethe
smoothrunningoftheprogram.Evaluationover12monthswillmonitorchildren’sprogress.Changesintheperceptionsofchil-
drenattheendoftheprogramwillbemeasuredusingdatacollectedfromthetargetedmadaris.
FundsforthisprojecthavebeenmadeavailablebytheYamadaFund.

duringthefloodsof2010.VolunteersvisitedMu-
zaffargarhinPunjabprovincewhereoutof2183
schools, 1175 are rendered unsafe, 785 were
beingusedas reliefcampsand100,000school
dropouts are feared.Our volunteers distributed
food, clothes, books, and reading promotion
hatswhichwereagreatsuccess,eventheolder
womenwanted them.Alif Laila’s book,Kahani
Aik Jungle Ki“AJungleTellsitsTale”,onself-re-
lianceand taking-action-for-change, fascinated
children.
Weusedbibliotherapyafterthe2005EarthquakeinPakistanandaredoingsoagainhere.Weaimtoprovideour‘BooksBuild
Bridges’librariestoasmanyreliefcampsandschoolsasfundsallow.Thelibrarykitsweredevelopedontheconceptofbiblio-
therapyandplaytherapyforchildren.AgenerousdonationfromLahoreGrammarSchool55MainenabledAlifLailatosetup
15“BooksBuildBridges”librariesforchildrenaffectedbythefloods.BooksBuildBridgeslibrariessupportedbyfriendsfrom
IBBYalsowentto85schoolsalloverPakistan.TheIndusResourceCentre,SindhandSalikDevelopmentFoundation,Khyber
Pakhtunkhwaarealsofacilitatingprovisionoflibrarykitsto20schoolseach.Another25kitsarealsounderwaythroughdona-
tionssentinbyfriendsfromIBBY.
Reading Promotion Campaign (FOSI):
AlifLailaBookBusSocietyheldIndependenceDayCelebrationson14thAugustattheGovernmentGirlsElementarySchool
Ranikeminara.ChildrenfromtheschoolandcommunityjoinedtheAlifLailateamtocelebratethespecialdayturningtheevent
intoamajorsuccess.
InadditiontootheractivitiestheAlifLailateamranacampaignwithchildrenandteachersoftheschool,wherechildrenformally
pledgedto‘ReadtoSucceed’.Theparticipantswrotecommentsonpiecesofcloththatwerelatermadeintoaquilt.
NationalAssemblyMember,Mr.IrfanDogarattendedtheevent,announcedconstructionofmuchneededclassroomsforthe
elementaryschool,andpublicallythankedtheAlifLailateamfortheirefforts.

IBBY- Palestinian SectionThehighlightofthelastfewmonthscamewiththefacilitationofaworkshoptitled:”EncouragingtheCultureofReadingamong
PalestinianChildreninRefugeeCampsinLebanon”
ThiswasourfirstactivityfocusingonPalestinianrefugeesinLebanon.Manychildreninthesecommunitiesareonlysemi-
literateandschoollibrariesarescarce.Drop-outratesfromschoolsarehighasmanychildrenarerequiredtohelpsupporttheir
families.
Theworkshopfocusedonhowtopromotereadingforpleasure inchildren’s librariesTheparticipantswereempoweredwith
techniquesofpromotingreadingamongchildrenandyouth.Whiletheworkshopacknowledgedthatbuildingareadingculture
isanon-goingprocessthatneedstimetobefullydeveloped,thefacilitatorsalsoemphasisedthatanysimpleactivityorproj-
ectcanhelpinpromotingreading.Workshopparticipantsrequestedfurthertrainingandassistanceinenrichingtheirlibraries
withqualitybooks.TheworkshopwasimplementedundertheIBBYYamadaProgrambyPBBYincooperationwithTheArab
ResourceCentreforPopularArt).

tionofthecentre,themissionandthepublicationsanditsroleinpromotingPalestiniannationalidentity,emphasising
theneedprovidesuitableresources,libraries,andsupportsystemstothePalestiniansocietieslivingthere.
Aninterestingdiscussionfollowed,andallattendantsemphasizedtheimportanceofsuchmeetingsandinteractionbetween
Palestinianseverywhere:theOccupiedTerritory,inexileandinsidetheGreenLine.

welcomedtheCanadianPublisherandformerPresidentoftheInternationalBoardonBooksforYoungPeople(IBBY).Duringher
five-daystay,MsAldanavisitedanumberofpublishing-relatedconcerns.InadditiontoaspecialmeetingwithSheikhaBodour,
shealsoheldameetingwiththeJuryfortheUAEBBY-organisedEtisalatAwardforArabicChildren’sLiterature,andwiththe
CultureDepartment’sAhmedAlAmri,DirectoroftheSharjahInternationalBookFair.
UAEBBYorganizedaninteractivereadingsessionoftheaward-winningbook‘AlNoqtaAlSawda’(TheBlackDot),attheAus-
tralianVictoriaInternationalSchool.Thebook,whichwonthesecondeditionoftheEtisalatPrizeforArabicChildren’sLiterature
in2010,wasreadbyitsauthorandillustrator,WalidTahir.Thereadingsessioncoincidedwiththeclosingdateforentryintothis
year’seditionoftheEtisalatAwardforArabicChildren’sLiterature,aheadoftheannouncementofthewinningbookandauthor
attheSharjahBookFairinNovember.
In the last week of September, the UAEBBY announced their ‘Long List’
ofbooksthathavebeennominatedforthe2011EtisalatAwardforArabic
Children’sLiterature.Judgesselected the top10booksamong thebooks
enteredinthecompetition.Thejudgingpanelincludesfivemembers(apub-
lisher,anauthor,anillustrator,acriticandaninternationalexpert)fromthe
ArabWorldandEurope.Thewinningbookwillbeannouncedon16Novem-
ber,onthesidelinesoftheopeningceremonyoftheSharjahInternational
BookFair.
The UAE’s National Section, called UAEBBY [UAE Board on Books for
YoungPeople]whichwas launched on 1 January 2010, has representa-
tivesfromeachofthesevenemiratestoensurecountry-widecoordination
ofactivitiestopromotereading.TheBoardiskeentohostlocal,Araband
foreignwritersandillustratorswiththeaimofenhancingtheculturalmove-
mentamongtheyoungergenerationwhiledevelopingtheirreadinghabits
throughinteractionwithliteraryfiguresfromallovertheworld.
