CONTEXT
The Habitat dos Mellos’ retreat is the Mantiqueira Mountains, between the cities of Campos do Jordão, Santo Antônio do Pinhal and São Bento do Sapucaí. One of the last preserved green areas of Brazil, which contains fragments of high-altitude Atlantic Forest. The area’s rich subsoil supplies the sorrounding cities and industries with its pure water, including Greater São Paulo. Not to mention its biodiversity, which cries for help against open devastation and disorderly occupation of the area.

VISION
Dignified cohabitation. A place where walls do not rise to impose distinctions. Where growth and opportunities are organic for human beings, plants, animals, enterprises and institutions. A place where living is equal, where every human is unique and perceives the potential apprenticeship behind the co-creation of something new.
The Habitat’s vision is to create an unique and innovative cohabitation format, never before seen anywhere. A format that can be applied not only in Brazil, but anywhere worldwide. With countless functionalities in refugee camps, urban ghettos, slums, etc. The first and only cohabitation initiative which intends to break the unequal living paradigm, based on a gateless and borderless community.
The Habitat aims to integrate different people. Suggests that individual achievements and a prosperous and fulfilling life comes as fruit of collective cooperation, thus resulting in economic, social and techonological breakthrough in association with nature. The Habitat is a new concept of city living. A new look towards cohabitation. A place where natural, urban and human elements are integrated and indivisible.

WHAT IS THE HABITAT DOS MELLOS?
Habitat dos Mellos is a social initiative guided by the Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN (www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable-development-goals). It’s a planned community in the Mantiqueira Mountains. Carries sustainability and dignity as its core values. The Habitat is a blend of cohabitation, education,
work and sustainable technology. An unprecedented assortment that foments a wall-less interaction between different social classes, between country and urban. A sustainable way of living and cohabiting.

A co-created community format, a process designed to be modeled and replicated on different settings and scales. The Habitat offers a groundbreaking approach to the cohabitation concept. A striking solution to connect people with different backgrounds in a sustainable manner.
Besides housing, Habitat dos Mellos will also facilitate the cocreation of spaces for educational, artistical and cultural purposes, as well as fostering the development of fabric laboratories and cutting-edge technology centers. The local population, enhanced by national and international partnerships, will have an active participation on the implementation process.
As means of generating value and social impact, a local employment agency will link the service provider to the job opportunities in the region.

The Habitat is a private venture with a social bias, that does not seek profit as its main purpose. Offers low income families the opportunity to finance home purchases, thus enabing the access to an equitable and innovative living concept. The Habitat will stimulate the local economy and promote a radical improvement on hunger, poverty and unemployment rates. Through the establishment of a circular and shared economy, combined with home financing, the Habitat’s goal is to be self sufficient in energy, food and technology.

HOW?
The Habitat will offer a supportive and democratic environment for the development of innovative projects. For this purpose, it counts on associations with universities, institutions, organizations and people in Brazil and around the world who share the same view.
The interaction between the Habitat’s cocreators will start off in a container park carried through the first partnerships to accomodate students and collaborators of various fields. A combination of experiences mixing nature, art, gastronomy and entrepreneurship, this space will serve as an enabler of present and future projects. The beggining of a joint venture for the cocreation of an urban project with environmental focus.

The lack of walls fronting natural environment will raise awareness regarding the impacts caused until then. Such original and unprecedented initiative intends to break down the social barriers detaching people from people, and people from nature.
Ecologic restoration plans will be executed along with projects to recover the region’s traditional culture. Always within the framework of encouraging sustainable consumption and production standards, whether in relation to agriculture or technology.
A wall-less cohabitaiton between different social classes will have a stimulating effect in promoting a rich exchange amongst inhabitants, humans or not.
HOW?

The Habitat presents itself as an instrument to set the social differences aside for learning and exchange of knowledge. Constructing a new narrative in relation to differences between people. Changing history with wisdom through the integration of varied skills in order to learn to enjoy diversity.
The Habitat is also concerned with the environment, and therefore commited to sustainable water consumption and distribution standards to ensure the resource’s availability to everyone on an equal basis. The distribution network will be decentralized and advanced studies will be carried out to develop sustainable basic sanitation systems for all inhabitants.
The development of a clean energy research center, in addition to the usage of alternative sources to supply the Habitat, will assure realiable access to elecricity for the population in the area. A winning sinergy between nature and technology.
HOW?

Through associations with universities, educational institutions and NGOs, the Habitat will hold a varied educational center adapted to current needs. The combination of academic and professional training with practical on-site application will create many opportunities, embracing everyone in the long term learning process. As with housing, micro loans will be offered for those who can not bear the housing loan or the tuition fees.
The employment agency structured by the Habitat will survey the regional labour demand with the aim of providing opportunities and a safe social environment for the local population. Such survey will point out the necessities in terms of education and capacitation, furnishing valuable information to guide future partnerships in this sector. In view of a shared life quality, the Habitat will offer equal and sustainable access to all necessary means for a worthy life.
HOW?

A variety of activities with proven benefits to people’s well being and the natural environment will be promoted; and within this perspective, sponsor the integration of all participants.
Social, economic and environmental indicators will be measured to corroborate the employed actions’ effectiveness. The idea is to provide conditions, attested through measurable impacts, for people to enjoy a prosper and equal life.
Gender equity programs will be implemented towards girls and women to empower the community, as a sucessful reference on human relations. The local employment agency will conduct gender equity policies to ensure fair wages and job opportunities.
Considering that art and culture are community essentials, the Habitat will allocate parks for artistic interventions co-created by the community and contributing artists.Cultural facilities designed for educational and leisure purposes will hold a diversified program to meet all interests and ages.
HOW?

Several architectural firms around the world will collaborate to design the most sustainable and resilient structures. The use of recicled and certified sustainable materials will grant the access and inclusion of low income families to the latest technology in terms of sustainable habitation.
With the establishment of an institutional center, workshops will be held to discuss and redesign the governance process in order to secure broad and democratic access to the decision-making.
HOW?
The constructions will have a modular oriented design to offer an equal and eco-friendly living. The use of sustainable materials added to the buildings’ design will extinguish the esthetic differences between social classes, thus catalyzing the interaction and mutual cooperation. Studies and tests on governance and social security issues will be conducted by the Habitat’s cocreators and local initiatives.

WHO IDEALIZED HABITAT DOS MELLOS?
Fernanda Ralston Semler is co-founder of Ralston Semler Foundation. She created and is engaged in several impactful social projects. Her initiatives bring (and brought) enormous positive impact on the development of the region of Mantiqueira Mountains, by radically lowering the unemployment rate and generating a socially and economically safe environment.

RICARDO SEMLER
Ricardo Semler is a champion of the employee-friendly radical corporate democracy he implemented as CEO of Semco Partners for over 20 years. He believes that if we simply ask why we do things and devolve power to employees, we’re able to create wiser companies - ones that are simultaneously more productive and have a happier workforce. Ricardo is the best-selling author of the classic Maverick and The Seven-Day Weekend. He has guest lectured on his management practices at MIT and Harvard, and is working to bring radical corporate democracy to education through Lumiar School.

Gordon Roddick, helped found The Body Shop in Brighton with his wife Anita in 1976. Roddick had trained as an agricultural scientist before emigrating to Australia aged 20. As Body Shop’s co-chairman, he became involved in helping disadvantaged groups, particularly in Brazil. In 1991, along with John Bird, Roddick funded the launch of The Big Issue to fight homelessness. An active supporter of community and social enterprise, his most recent project has been working as co-founder of 38 Degrees, online activist organisation.
David C Cole is a investor in technology. He was chairman, president and chief executive officer of NaviSoft, an Internet-based software provider, He was also president of AOL’s Internet Services Company then president of AOL New Enterprises group. He held operating responsibility for AOL International, AOL Enterprises, among others. In addition to that, he served as director of Hawaii BioEnergy, Grove Farm, Hawaii Superferry, Hawaiian Electric Company, and Sesame Workshop. Other affiliations include Chancellor’s Advisory Council of Maui Community College and Kamehameha Schools Board of Advisors. Cole is a former director of PBS’ Sesame Workshop, the World Wildlife Fund, American Farmland Trust, and Island Press.

WHY?
The idea and challenge to break the walls that separate brazilians and the world and bring about a true and unparalleled integra-tion between people with different resourc-es and cultures are one of the Habitat’s main reasons. Sustainability and broadminded-ness towards diversity presents itself as an organic consequence of the interaction be-tween different worlds.
Stand as a sucessful application case of practicable human centered solutions in con-nection with nature. Stimulate the debate on equality and cohabitation, as well as the de-velopment of new sustainable remedies and technologies to raise awareness and increase engagement.

Habitat dos Mellos will be a hub for the most diverse projects. Some of these projects were already identified through the colaboration of the local population with external co-creators. The goal is to generate a rich exchange between different organizations and individuals, directed to the creation of more and more sustainable impactful projects. This initiative will also organize the interaction between such parties in order to create and implement several projects.
That said, you will find in the next page a list of projects already written through the integration with the local population. The objective is to generate partnerships to deliver these projects during the formation of this new concept of city and to create a mutual healthy social and natural environment. These partnerships will develop a new way of looking at cohabitation, combining technology and education with dignified existence, from the start.

Habitat dos Mellos will facilitate the access to microfinacing for low income families, creating the possibility for those who can not afford to build a house in Habitat. This project’s goal is to create a trully diverse community, providing job opportunity and education to all. Supporting the local economy from the inside out in a sustainable and conscious movement.
The microcredir it is not limited to housing, being applicable also to entrepreneurs, artisans, artists, farmers, etc.
To do that Habitat searchs for partners that can contribute with the design of the system and finance and/or fund the loans. Generating measurable impact for decades.
This project’s objective is to incentive the local production at the same time proposing a gastronomic exchange of receiving chefs in a residency program and creating a educational environment where the regional flavors and the forgotten uses of some plants are rescued. The implementation of such project begins parallely to the container par.
For that, Habitat is looking for partners that have interest on the cocreation of the space and the program. Partners that are concerned about health. That believe that the shape and content of the food is related to a better quality of life. Habitat seeks partners that are willing to invest in the food exchange and education related to food and it’s technology.

Habitat dos Mellos will establish centers for renewable energy and climate change research. These centers will serve at the same time as field station for researchers and educational space for the inhabitants, including the population in the implementation process. Understanding the local potential, and creating a rich exchange between international researchers and local populations, bringing the solution closer to practice. Creating impact not only in the result but also in the process. Thus, Habitat need partners that are aware of the urgent need of rethinking energy.
RESEARCH IN RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES
Project TechFarm’s goal is to establish technological centers and fablabs spread through the Habitat. Descentralizing and mixing different institutes and researchers from different parts of Brazil and the World. Having always in mind the technical capacitation and professional training for the inhabitants, together with the study and development of new and more sustainable technologies.
The incentive on technology creates jobs and the sustainable thinking, the idea is to develop a circular economy.
A main component of the project are exchange programs, bringing students, teachers, artists and researchers from all over the world together. To implement this project, Habitat seeks partnership with organizations and institutions that invest in education and technology.
PROJECT TECHFARM

Habitat will empower the women by establishing a center for woman and developing research on food ingeneering, using the traditional knowledge to create entrepreneurs, sustanably using the local products to transcend the gender paradigm and produce a fair and dignified community. The technical capacitation and professional training of the women will surely generate jobs and increase the regional economic growth.
Through partnerships Habitat seeks the creation of the most diverse educational programs, exchange programs and pop up talks and lectures.
One the most urgent projects, that not only generate temporary jobs in short term perspective, have the potential to change the view of a population on sanitation and sewage systems. Combined with educational purposes scales that possibility of healing the rivers of the region. The goal is to create micro stations for the sustainable treatment of water and ending the dejection of residues in the rivers.
PROJECT MICRO AGROINDUSTRYPROJECT SANITATION OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Rethink and cocriate security is Project No Lock’s objective. The combination of technology and human centered design will estudy and develop new systematics. Using old traditions and new factors to establish a responsible sense of security. Empowering each inhabitant to be responsible for the security of the whole. To do this, Habitat searchs for partners that research and develop new technologies and partners for the implementation of such labs.
PROJECT NO LOCKS
The idea is to study and validate the impact of invasive species of plants in the ecosystem, (braquiaria, bastão-do-brejo and others) and develop a way to reintroduce the native species, erradicanting the invasives without compromising the population nor the surrounding nature. The project have two stages: 1. Opening spots for planting native plants of accelerated growth rate; 2. inhibit the invasive species without cutting them immediatelly, but empower the native to surpass the invasive. The process will restablish the ecosystem and create a paradigm shift on how the population sees the utility and aesthetics of the flora.
To execute this restoration, Habitat need expert partners and also partners that believe in the reconstruction of the relationship between human and nature, and are willing to invest in research and execution.
PROJECT FOR ERRADICATION OF INVASIVE SPECIES

It is a notorious fact that transportation is a big cause of emission of polutives. To avoid that, Habitat will only have vehicules moved by alternative fuel. There will be a center for study and development of new transportation methods. Such view on transportation not only changes the way people look at the environment but the sharing of transportation bring people together, fueling diversity and disrupting social barriers. To accomplish that, Habitat needs partners that share the vision of togetherness and are able to invest in infrastructure, equipment and research and development. Partners that believe in shared economy.
PROJECT THE PATH PROJECT AMARILIS
Project Amarilis is a conservation project, that contributes to the knowledge and preservation of the local fauna and flora. The goal is to identify and select Altlantic Forest’s resources and study the possibility of its sustainable use. The inventive and inclusion of the population in the research and identification creates a shared educational space that is a catalyst to the comprehension and harmony with nature. A design of a mutual space. Combining the traditional wisdom with scientific research. Creating jobs and opportunities.

Project Returning Home will reintroduce four native species of plants, two Arecaceae (Palmae), one Celastraceae and one Poaceae (Graminae) that were abundantly natural in the neighborhood but now are extinct due to unconscious exploration. Plants of certified commercial, medicinal and nourishment values. The implementation of this project (combined with others) generate sustainable revenue in medium and long term. The rational exploration of such species generates jobs and economic growth without compromising the expansion off the native forest.
PROJECT RETURNING HOME
The goal of Project Guatambu is to expand the numbers of the species “guatambu-amarelo” (Aspidosperma australe), study the possibility of its sustainable use, this species is harvested traditionaly for its building utilities.

The idea of this project is to reintroduce and raise the amount of flower and honey trees, establishing a natural garden that produces honey and can be studied and developed for commercial return. Combining the leisure areas, with cultural and artistic spaces with the production of honey and its productsl.
