Wishes Come True
Cover Story:Spencer, age 7, Cerebral Palsy and Prena-
tal Stroke. Wish... Meet princesses at
Spencer, her 3 older sisters and older brother had never been on a family vacation with their parents. The whole family traveled to South-ern California the week before Christmas for their first family vacation. Spencer had the time of her life as she had the undivided at-tention of her family and the characters of Dis-neyland, Universal Studios and Seaworld. She has told everyone about being able to wish upon a shiny fish scale from Ariel of the Little Mermaid. Spencer’s Ocean I stood alone in the ocean in October. The
Pacific stung cold on my legs. Looking at the sheer expanse and power of the ocean was awe-inspiring. My thoughts went traveling with the waves. I was filled with reflection. Spencer Victoria was born six years ago. She
had a stroke in-utero, and was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Her entire right side is weak. She limps and rarely uses her right hand. The following cold memories splashed with the
waves against my legs. I remembered how I had felt inadequate and frightened with the diagnosis. Grief had come in so many phases and forms. Like the tide coming in and going back out, I would find fear and comfort, an eternal cycle. So here I stood in the ocean. I had come
specifically to find peace to a troubling thought. Spencer had been granted a wish. I felt guilty of our family being able to go on an incredible vacation because of Spencer’s challenges. I had come to the ocean troubled and stood waiting for inner peace. Spencer was granted a wish, a celebration of her life. I needed to find peace so that I could be free to help her fully embrace her wish experience. I stood in the ocean long enough that
my legs became numb to the cold, but the rhythm had become soothing. Warm thoughts washed over me. I smiled to myself reflecting on Spencer. Yes, there had been painful memories. Yes, there would be future worries. But, Spencer was so full of life bringing inspiration and strength. Spencer has brought so many blessings into my life. She embraces life and celebrates it fully. She really was an ocean of power and life. I wanted to embrace her and all the wonder that comes from her life, including the experience of her wish. It became clear to me that it was not because of her challenges that she was granted a wish. It was in spite of her challenges. The wish was granted as a celebration of life and love. I returned to the ocean in December on
Spencer’s wish. The water was still cold, but it didn’t have the same sting. This time when I stood facing the waves, I held a warm hand. The hand was small but powerful. I was in the moment. I was celebrating Spencer’s life.Wishes really do come true! Thank you
staff, volunteers, sponsors and all those who celebrate life. –Madona Wiltse

She was looking for a good organization that she could get involved with and help with their mission when a co-worker introduced her to Wishing Star. She is currently volunteering for Cancer Pa-tient Care and says that she loves to help others.

I wish…for a Buffalo.Ethan, age 15, with
Cycstic Fibrosis... I wish… and I got…a Buffalo.
Ethan wished for a buffalo. His story was highlighted in the Wish Connection for Summer/Fall 2006. Upon reading his story several years ago and again last fall, Betty Wheat of Moscow, ID knew Ethan was the perfect kid to take care
of her buffalo. Betty has long been an employee of the National Forest Service and has a very large collection of buffalos in her office. She is planning her retirement and relocation for spring 2007. She contacted Wishing Star to inquire if Ethan would like to have a portion of her buffalo collection. Upon learning he would accept, she delivered a very large stuffed buffalo to Wishing Star. Ethan’s expression was priceless when it was given to him along with a small version of the buffalo and a beautifully framed brochure for the Bison Range in Montana.

She has a passion for travel and has been around the world. She is always planning the next trip. Jennifer shares, “I really believe that people need to understand and be exposed to a diversity of ideas and ways of living if we hope to live together in the world peacefully. I came to Wishing Star because I believe in the organization and its mission. It has always been important for me to share the blessings God has given me through working with those who need blessings most.

Hilarious!!! This is your chance to send a very special gift to a friend. Have you ever wondered how to tell someone how much you appreciate them? Here is your chance! Have a “real live baby goat” hand-delivered to your friend’s office, school, daycare, meeting, etc. When we arrive, the “friendly goat” will be given as a gift to the Goated. A poem about being goated will be recited, some goat “pooh” (chocolate) will be gifted while the recipient has the choice to Grin & Bear it, Be a Good Sport, or the most famous one of all “Let’s All-Have-a-Goat” option.
Note: While we are there, the Goated is free to pet the goat! They just love the attention.
Cost to Send a Friend a Goat $75.00
Goats will be delivered throughout Spokane, Coeur d’Alene and Tri-Cities
Christmas AngelsGuadalupe, age 23, with Cancer and Antonio,
age14, with Congenital Arthrogy – Antonio wished to visit the San Diego area last April. Guadalupe had wished for a similar trip the year before. While the family was away on the wish trip, their home burned, thus ruining everything in it. Soon the family will move into a new manufactured home. Many thanks go out to the employees of Liberty Lake KIA, Nampa KIA and Wenatchee KIA Christmas Program sponsors who were able to work their magic. Their Christmas presents included furniture, bed and bath linens, small kitchen appliances, dishes, pots, pans and much more.
We ask our wish parents to share with us the stories of their children’s wishes. On page 2 is Spencer’s Ocean, a moving description of how a mother put aside the guilt, worry and grief of her child’s condi-tion to live presently.
I have been blessed to get to know this family. My daughter and I listened as Spen-cer excitedly recited her three wishes and then gave us a tour of her home. I rode the Carrousel with Spencer watching her move from the inside pony to the middle pony and finally with confidence to the outside pony. I introduced my granddaughter to Spencer one afternoon last fall hoping that they will grow to be friends. My husband, mother-in-law and I delivered the trip bags watching the excitement of the whole family as they read their itinerary. Spencer lights up every room she enters and every heart that she meets. She is a remarkable child, full of joy, laughter and love. She lives totally and presently in the moment. As a Wishing Star volunteer, you too could have these experiences.
In her story, Madona shares “warm thoughts washed over me”. I believe that what she had discovered was the ability to be mindful. According to Daniel Siegel, M.D. author of The Developing Mind and Parenting from the Inside Out, mindfulness is at the heart of good parenting. When we are mindful, we live in the present mo-ment, are aware of our own thoughts and feelings, and also are open to those of our child. This ability to stay present with clarity within ourselves allows us to be fully pres-ent with our child respecting our child’s individual experiences. This in turn enables our child to fully experience themselves in the moment. Children thrive when parents are present physically and emotionally. We can all learn from children the art of mind-fulness.

Wishing Star makes Christmas time a joyful time for entire families. Over $45,000 worth of gifts were distributed this year.
“What a thrill for all of us! The gifts were delivered last night to the excitement of all the children who were totally surprised! It was wonder-ful! As it will be, I know when Christmas morn comes and they get to open their
goodies. How nice that they have so many days to look, guess and build the suspense. We are overwhelmed with the extravagant grace shown to us with being gifted again this year.. It truly makes such a positive difference in the children’s holiday season, and Mike’s and mine!” –Julee, mom to ten ad-opted special needs children from Africa and Indonesia

WMEDICINE, NOT JUST MAGIC, IN OUR WISHESWe now have a little better understanding of the mag-
ic of a wish. Fall quarter five Eastern Washington Univer-sity marketing students created a telephone survey as part of a real-world application for their statistics class. Using our office telephones, seniors Tiffany Skierka, John-ny Shumate, Brandon Crowston, Ryan Walters and Joel Stewart contacted 82 former wish families, questioning them on our programs and services. From the results they prepared a research report entitled, An Evaluation of Customer Satisfaction.
Highlights include:A majority of the respondents claim to have observed
dramatic improvement in the wish child’s health/out-look when they found out about the wish.
More wish parents saw dramatic improvement in the wish child’s health/outlook AFTER the wish was granted than when the child found out about the wish.
Wishing Star is doing a superior job at making the wish process less complicated and providing a service that impacts people with a high degree of satisfaction. A majority of the respondents would like to become bet-ter connected to our organization.
In their report the students examined several studies relating the effect of attitude on health. They quoted from an article entitled, Laughing Your Way to Health and Enlightenment from the September/October 2004 issue of American Fitness. Author Patty Williamson writes, “Numerous research studies have shown that laughter positively affects our immune systems. When we laugh, T cells, natural killer cells that produce antibodies, in-crease in number.” The article tells how laughter can ease both mental and physical tension, a modality that is important for children coping with illness.
Wishing Star hopes to expand on this study by utilizing another group of students to contact additional former wish families. Hopefully we can scientifically prove that there is “medicine in the wish, not just magic.”
Spokane ChapterOver the past two years the Greater Spokane
Chapter has been organizing itself. As of October 2006 the slate of officers include Bill Widrig, president, Pam Heisler, treasurer, and Amanda Newhouse, secretary. Sharon Widrig started the Senior Challenge Program to get more seniors involved in volunteer work such as the Blankie Program, making birthday cards, and putting on fundraisers. The chapter meets the first Thursday of each month at the corporate office. The chapter’s goals include increasing chapter fundraisers, adding volunteers, performing all Spokane area wish visits, assisting with the granting of these wishes and coordinating yarn drives in area schools. They are looking forward to a fun-filled and exciting year. Come join them! For more information, contact Bill at “mailto:billw@wishingstar.org” billw@wishingstar.org .
Magic Valley ChapterThe Magic Valley Chapter has experienced some
great changes this past year. Their new treasurer is Deb-bie Fauvell. Debbie is a wish mom. Her daughter Kay-lee, at sweet sixteen wished to visit Nauvoo, Illinois. With five full time volunteers, this chapter is stronger then ever. They enjoyed their successful second Wish Family Christ-mas party and hope this becomes an annual event. The chapter was saddened to have lost several wish kids this year. They have worked hard and are beginning to see the results of becoming well known in their area. The chapter has made friends with many organizations. The Southern Idaho Muzzle Loaders Association, the Snake River Corvette Club and Zeb at the Ranch radio talk show raise money for Wishing Star on an annual ba-sis. Allie Vargas, Chapter President, invites all interested volunteers to attend their monthly meetings. For more information, contact Allie at “mailto:alliev@wishingstar.org” alliev@wishingstar.org. Allie says that she appreci-ates the support and love the chapter receives from the gorgeous Magic Valley.

We Have Revised Our Mission StatementI am a wish mom and for the past three years the
President of the Magic Valley Chapter of the Wishing Star Foundation. I have had the awesome blessing of being on the receiving end of what Wishing Star does and now have the equally awesome blessing of being on the giving side. This dual role has given me a fairly broad perspective of the depth of our mission. I volun-teered to sit on the committee that was revising our Mis-sion Statement believing that the old one didn’t even come close to expressing all that this wonderful founda-tion is and does for wish families and the communities in which we serve.
As you read the revised Mission Statement, I hope you see and feel the enormous mission that Wishing Star ac-complishes as we work with precious wish families and affect entire communities where they live.-Allie Vargas
Before To put smiles on the faces of our wish kids and their families.

December 11 – 18th the public relations team (Rebecca & Prince) came to Spokane and Coeur d’Alene to help raise awareness of Wishing Star. The team soon came to understand that the power of the wish. Rebecca and Prince learned that a wish
empowers the child and the family while restoring hope. While delivering Christmas gifts to some of our wish families Rebecca and Prince were able to give the gift of “Going Beyond the Wish”. They gave something to these families that only a very large funny looking mobile could bring - smiles and laughter - all while making the families feel very special. The week ended with a
community-wide celebration. The Oscar Mayer WeinerMobile and Santa joined Wendle Motors at the Y for a once-in-a- lifetime pictures.
