Congratulations, Nancy Crosen Our Employee of the Month
Nancy Crosen, the Adult Day and School Nurse since May 2012, is described by Melmark staff as a kind and compassionate person to all the individuals with whom she works. Nancy greets every person who enters The Katie Trainor Healthcare Center with a smile and gives them her undivided attention as she begins to provide care. Even though the nurses’ station can have a lot of visitors at any given moment, Nancy takes the time to communicate with each individual in a respectful and courteous manner.
She places a high value on the type of care each child and adult receives and consults with other staff or departments on best treatment plans.
Nancy goes above and beyond to help out in any area and will often pick up extra shifts at the last minute to ensure optimal care for each individual served at Melmark. All of her co-workers appreciate that Nancy is willing to go the extra mile to ensure that care is never interrupted for any reason.
We are all very fortunate to have Nancy as a member of our Healthcare Services team. Please join us in congratulating Nancy on being named Melmark’s May 2015 Employee of the Month.

There are many ways we can show those in our lives our appreciation. It may be through a simple “thank you” or through small tokens of gratitude. Sometimes, however, it is extremely difficult to let people know the extent of our appreciation. This is especially true for the teachers and health care staff at Melmark.
Each day, our teachers and classroom staff make an incredible impact on the lives of every child we serve in The Melmark School. They put all of their focus on the well-being of the boys and girls entrusted to our care. How can we ever thank them enough for
the amazing work they do to lead these children to greater independence.
Likewise, the health care staff at Melmark use their expertise and warm, caring souls to make sure our children and adults are healthy and happy. They build a rapport with each patient they see, and they work around the clock with one goal in mind: the safety of the individual. To say our health care staff is appreciated is an understatement.
Although there are not enough words to convey my feelings, I would like to share my deep appreciation to each of you who have dedicated your careers to supporting children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Thank you for creating a warm, loving environment for those who deserve it most.
A Message from Our President Joanne Gillis-Donovan, Ph.D.

Advocacy Corner: Melmark Hosts Lawmakers at 2015 Legislative Event
On Monday, May 18, Melmark hosted its special legislative breakfast event in the Meadows Tea Room to rally support for Melmark’s application for a grant from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP). At the breakfast, we welcomed several members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, including Representatives Tom Killion, Warren Kampf, Jamie Santora and Matt Bradford. Pennsylvania Senator Tom McGarrigle and his Chief of Staff, Alex Charlton also attended, along with Delaware County Chamber of Commerce President, Trish McFarland, and Main Line Chamber of Commerce President, Bernie Dagenais.
In addition to our local lawmakers, we also welcomed Mickey Flynn, Chair of the Melmark Charitable Foundation Board, Denny Willson, Cabinet Co-Chair for Promises to Keep...The Campaign for Melmark, as well as Melmark parents and board members, Clive Mendelow and Mary Maurer. One of the highlights of the morning was when Melmark parent and board member, Joe Duffey shared his family’s story of crisis that led them to turn to Melmark for help. He and Dr. Donovan stressed the importance of Melmark as a community resource that could be needed by anyone at any time in their lives.
Our hope is that, when reviewing submissions for the RACP Grant, these legislators strongly consider Melmark as a recipient. I will keep you posted on the outcome of our application.
I would like to personally thank each person for their support in coordinating Melmark’s 2015 Legislative Breakfast.

Over its almost 50 years of service, Melmark has been blessed with many wonderful neighbors -- people who live in private homes in the neighborhoods adjacent to the campus and embrace and support our programs and services. A number have served as volunteers, and many are donors. As we all know, it is not always easy to live next door to an organization of the size and scope of Melmark. So, we are grateful when someone close by understands and respects our work.
Early in the Campaign, we were fortunate to meet one of our neighbors who called to request a tour and the opportunity to learn more about the organization next door. Mr. Mark Lynch met with Dr. Donovan and toured the campus, including educational programs for our children and vocational programs for our adults. He saw first-hand the residences and witnessed the quality of care and compassion provided by our dedicated staff.
Two weeks later, Mr. Lynch stopped by and left an envelope with our receptionist, Lois Eyler. Enclosed was a check for nearly $30,000—an incredible vote of confidence in our work and the ongoing needs of Promises to Keep...The Campaign for Melmark. Since then, Mr. Lynch has been back to tour Melmark with his high school aged son. Mr. Lynch wanted his son to be aware of the great work Melmark is accomplishing.
We are grateful beyond words for this generous support, and we are reminded that Melmark is deserving of support from within our community, friends and neighbors. We all just need to be open and receptive, and
willing to share our mission, vision and legacy of care.
