Computer Support Specialists and Systems Administrators

• provide technical assistance, support, and advice to customers and other users.

• Help desk technicians respond to telephone calls, and email messages from customers looking for help.

• Network/Computer systems administrators design, install, and support an organization’s computer systems.

• Systems Administrators take responsibility for maintaining network efficiency.

Work Environment

• Well lighted, comfortable computer offices / laboratories.

• 40 hours a week work time (may require “on call”)• Susceptible to: eyestrain, back discomfort, hand +

wrist problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

Recommended Education• Bachelors degree in computer science (other

jobs only require computer-related associate degree)

Advancement• Beginning computer specialists usually work for

organizations that deal directly w/ customers.• May advance into positions where they are working

with customers to improve their skills.
