What are Composites?

Two or more chemically distinct materials which when combined have

improved properties over the individual materials

Constituent Materials

Matrix surrounds and supports the reinforcement materials by

maintaining their relative positions

Reinforcements impart special physical and mechanical properties to

enhance the matrix properties

Classification of Composites

Particle – Reinforced Composites

Concrete:

Coarse rock or gravel is embedded in a

matrix of cement

Gravels provides stiffness and strength while

cement acts as the binder to hold the structure

together

Fiber – Reinforced Composites

Wood – Cellulose fibers in lignin and hemicellulose matrix

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP)

Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP)

Reinforcement: fibers

Glass

Carbon

Boron

Matrix materials

Polymers

Metals

Ceramics

CFRP

GFRP

Structural Composites

Sandwich Panels Low density, honeycomb core

Benefit: light weight, large bending stiffness

Stacked and Bonded Fiber – Reinforced Sheets Stacking sequence: e.g., 0º/90º or 0/45/90º

Benefit: balanced, in-plane stiffness

Why Composites?

Excellent Strength – to Weight Ratio

Superior Mechanical Properties

Reduced Weight of the Final Components

Resistance to Fatigue

Resistance to Corossion

Design Flexibility

Lower Investment in Setting Up of Composites Manufacturing

Industry
