LATEST COMPARATIVE ABORTION RATES IN EUROPE 2010

The Council of Europe's final demographic report for 2005, (published June 2006) was its last. The Council of Europe reports and their comprehensive demographic data were excellent. An abortion rate over 100% of live-births means more abortions than births.

To complement the Council of Europe abortion data, the figures below are reinforced and updated from William Robert Johnston’s painstaking research. Johnston is assistant professor of surgery at Minnesota Medical School and studies world data on abortion. The last update of Johnston’s website www.johnstonsarchive.net was May 2010

* The figures relating to Austria are only for abortions in public hospitals. In general all abortion figures may understate and should be accepted cautiously. The figures for Ireland are those taking place in England & Wales. **In general, Mr. Johnston has attempted to get nations’ true abortion figures by trying to establish citizens’ abortions in other countries. That is why abortions are shown for some countries which do not permit abortion e.g. Ireland, Malta and Cyprus.. ***The Total Fertility rate (TFR), measures the annual births per 1,000 women of reproductive age. 2.1 children per woman is considered to be the number of births required to replace the population. Most of Europe is well below replacement level.
