Introduction to Communities-at-Risk

10/5/07

* A Community of Concern is a Wisconsin DNR concept whereby it is demonstrated that a significant portion of thecommunity (more than 2 adjoining square miles) are at high or very high risk, but where the community as a wholefalls below the Community-at-Risk threshold.

The purpose of this model is to identify broad areas of the statethat are at relatively high exposure to resource damage due towildfire. As mandated by the NASF, Wisconsin's Communities-At-Risk aredivided into three categories:1) Very High2) High3) Community of Concern*

Defining CommunityFor Wisconsin, Communities-at-Risk are reported at the MCD(municipal civil division) level*.MCD was chosen due to itsidentifiable legal boundaries, easein reporting, and usage in thedevelopment of CommunityWildfire Protection Plans.

* Menominee County is an exception due to its lack of MCD's(civil townships). Therefore, Menominee county is reportedby legal township.
