1. EXHIBITION BACKGROUNDcomiX eXchange Series

Taking Comix Home Base as a testing ground, local comics artists and artists specialised in other media are now working hand in hand to present comiX eXchange – a series of six cross-media and cross-experience exhibitions. Applying the mechanism of putting together “Experienced Artist X Emerging Artist” and “Comics Artist X Artist of Other Media”, this exhibition series involves six pairs of artists in total. Each of these pairs create collaborative works that explore the potential of comics, offering audience an entirely new “comics reading” experience.

Organised by Hong Kong Arts Centre and Comix Home Base under the sponsorship of Create Hong Kong of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, comiX eXchange not only enables artists from different disciplines and backgrounds to exchange ideas but also engages community members in experiencing arts. During the exhibition periods, artists will host master classes and workshops to share their experiences with the general public, calling aspiring individuals determined to establish their careers in the arts field to experiment with the creative multiplying effect of collaborative work.

1. EXHIBITION BACKGROUND

The first exhibition of comiX eXchange is presented by established local comics artist Khoo Fuk-lung and emerging multimedia artist Choi Sai-ho. A distinguished artist with years of experience in Hong Kong's comics industry, Khoo is well-known for the powerful and breathtaking scenes in his comics. On the other hand, Choi is an audio-visual artist and electronic musician who plays with sounds to provoke visual imagination. He sometimes produces animation works, too. Last year, before working with Khoo, he composed music for Storm Clouds, a dance performance adapted from a local comics, amplifying the animated presentation of the stage performance.

2. EXHIBITION DETAILS• Exhibition Period: 28 March 2015 – 26 April 2015

• Time: Monday to Sunday (10am – 8 pm)

• Venue: Exhibition Venue & Multi‐ Function Rooms 3‐7,3/F, Comix Home Base

3. ATTENDANCEDuring the entire exhibition period, headcount was done at the 3/F. Attendance record is as follows:

4. ARTIST’S PROFILEKHOO Fuk-lung is one of the leading comics artists from Hong Kong. His works are immensely popular in Southeast Asia.Khoo entered the comics industry at the age of 14, and started publishing works as a comics artist when he was 20. In 1989, he published his first comics series Iron Marshal, which was very well-received. In 1992, he established a publishing company with a friend and published a hardcover comics series called Dragonman. This comic title was so successful that it sold more than 50,000 copies in Hong Kong alone. In 1993, Khoo joined Jade Dynasty, working as the art director of the company's comics publications until 2007. He then founded Lucky Dragon Comics & Animation Ltd., publishing such works as Weapon of the Gods IV, The 8th Copper Man in Shaolin, Kung Fu, and The Assassination and the Emperor. In 2012, he left the company and founded Dark Comics & Toys Limited, making a new start in his comics career!

4. ARTIST’S PROFILECHOI Sai-ho, an electronic musician and audio-visual artist, obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Media from City University of Hong Kong in 2008. Choi's artistic versatility is displayed in his diverse creative productions. His animation work Mark 6 Players VS Game-Boy People was recommended by the jury of the 12th ifva. With outstanding talent in music, Choi was selected, in 2006, as the first Hong Kong musician to join the Red Bull Music Academy in Melbourne, Australia; and later as the "Best of Hong Kong Indie 2009 Number One" by Hong Kong's Time Out magazine and one of the CNNGo "Best Hong Kong Bands" in 2011. He received the "Award of Young Artist (Media Arts)" of "Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2012" from Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 2013, and "Ten Outstanding Designers Award 2014 – New Media Designer" at Hong Kong Art & Design Festival. Performances that Choi participated in include Clockenflap Music & Arts Festival (2011, West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade, Hong Kong), Electron Festival 2012 (Geneva, Switzerland), Worldtronics 2012 (Berlin, Germany), and Images of Hong Kong – A Concert of New Works Inspired by Ya Si's Poetry presented at The 42nd Hong Kong Arts Festival (2014). His works have been selected to Perform Media Festival 2006 (USA), VideoBrazil Festival 2007 (Brazil), Microwave International New Media Arts Festival (Hong Kong), Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial 2009, and more. Choi has held two solo multimedia concerts so far – Audio-visual Live in 2010, and An Audiovisual Concert: Live.Planet.Noise in 2013. In addition, he composed music for Hong Kong Dance Company's Storm Clouds, a martial arts drama adapted from the comics created and directed by Ma Wing-shing, in 2014; and received a nomination for "Outstanding Sound Design / Music" at 2015 Hong Kong Dance Awards.

Our docent was introducing comiX exchange I exhibition to the visitors from HKUST.

During the exhibition period, the regular public docent-guided tours offered by Comix Home Base –which cover the history of the building of Comix Home Base and the programmes happening there –gave visitors a detailed account of the exhibition.

Our docent was introducing comiX exchange I exhibition to the students from primary school.

During the exhibition period, the regular public docent-guided tours offered by Comix Home Base –which cover the history of the building of Comix Home Base and the programmes happening there –gave visitors a detailed account of the exhibition.

10. VISITORS’ FEEDBACK To get a better understanding of how visitors felt about the exhibition, questionnaires were distributed in Comix Home Base to collect their feedback.

A total number of 165 questionnaires were collected in the entire exhibition period. Thequestionnaire consists of both multiple-choice and open-ended questions.

Analysis of the data collected from the questionnaires is set out in the following pages. Theanalysis is divided into two parts:

For multiple-choice question, frequency distribution is shown with both raw numbers andpercentages. The percentages are calculated based on the total number of questionnairescollected (i.e. 165 ) If the figures of responses do not correspond with the total number ofquestionnaires collected, it is because some visitors did not answer the questions. For open-endedquestions, some of the answers given by respondents are shown in the analysis.

1.How many times have you visited comix home base?

The question was included in the questionnaire as we would like to gain better understanding of theaudiences visiting the exhibition and to evaluate our approaches to audience building. It isencouraging to see that more than 40% of the respondents were returning visitors since continuousparticipation of community members is vital to our strengthening of the audience base of ComixHome Base. The exhibition played a role in attracting new audiences, too – around 30% of therespondents were new comers, as shown in the table below.

Generally, visitors’ responses were positive. For the overall comment onthe exhibition, 94.5% of respondents gave a positive rating (i.e.“excellent”, “very satisfactory”, or “satisfactory”), with 13.3% of themeven indicating it as “excellent”.

Around 60% of respondents who responded to this question gave positive feedback on the overallusefulness of the exhibition, with 8.5% of and 15.8% indicating it “definitely useful” and “veryuseful” respectively. When reviewing the raw data collected from the questionnaires, we found thatfor respondents who expected to enhance their knowledge in the business, expand their contactnetwork, explore new business opportunities, better understand the industry’s position in the globalmarkets and broaden their scope about the industry (which were asked in Q4), nearly all of themindicated their satisfaction level from “fair” to “definitely useful” when answering Q5.
