SPANISH EDUCATION

SYSTEMMade by José Lucio Hernández Lorente

Education in Spain is regulated by the Ley Orgánica de Educación (LOE, Organic Law of Education) that expands upon Article 27 of the Spanish Constitution of 1978.

Education is compulsory and free for all children aged between 6 and 16 years, and is supported by the national government together with the governments of each of the country's 17 Autonomous Communities.

Schools in Spain can be divided into 3 categories:-State schools -Privately run schools funded by the State (religious or laic)-Purely private schools The school states:

-Kindergarten-Primary school-Secondary school-Baccalaureate-University

NURSERY SCHOOL ,which takes children from around three months up to three years old, but it is not covered by the state.

PRESCHOOL ,which take children from three to six years old. Preschools are often attached to state primary schools and are free.

PRIMARY SCHOOL. It is compulsory for children from 6 until 12.

COMPULSORY SECONDARY EDUCATION

If students complete the four years and passes the expected standards they will be awarded a Graduate of Secondary Education Certificate.

Secondary education is divided into two cycles: • from 12 to 14 years and • from 14 to 16. In both cycles, there are core compulsory subjects and optional subjects.

At 16, students can choose to study for : the Baccalaureate (bachillerato), intermediate vocational training or will be geared towards a specific job, leave education completely.

SPANISH UPPER SECONDARY EDUCATION

BACCALAUREATE is non-compulsory free education that consists of one cycle in two academic years for students age 16-18.

There are two types of VOCATIONAL TRAINING : Middle Grade Training cycles for those who only have

their ESO diploma and Superior Training Cycles for those who possess a

Spanish Baccalaureate diploma.

SPANISH UNIVERSITY AND HIGHER EDUCATION

By 2010, in accordance with the European Commission of Education and Training, Spanish higher education will consist of:

Bachelor degrees (Grade) for four year programs,

Master degrees for 2 year post-graduate programs,

Doctorates for post-masters education.

In Spain the SCHOOL YEAR generally starts in mid-September and runs through to mid-June. There are three terms of roughly 11 weeks.

There are usually two weeks of holiday over Christmas, two weeks over Easter and a long summer holiday of around 10–11 weeks.

The Key Competences for Lifelong Learning in the Spanish Education System have their origin in the key competences, established by the European Union at the end of 1990s.

The Spanish law of education established which competences were relevant. They are eight:

1. Communication in the mother tongue and at least in one foreign language.

2. Mathematical competence.3. Competence in science and technology.4. Digital competence (ICT)5. Learning to learn.6. Social and civic competence,7. Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship.8. Cultural awareness and expression.

Nowadays we are using pedagogical techniques as the use of technology in the classroom in order to increase student interaction and involvement. Normally our students work in groups of 2-3 on activities so they practice collaborating with peers and also help each other to construct new knowledge.

In the future we want to implement the use of tablets in the classroom.

I hope you have enjoyed and have learnt something useful about The Spanish Education System.
