Commander’s Report
Cdr Ron Tilmon, SN-CN
Greetings folks! Gee, it is sure great (?) being back in North Carolina after vacationing in the Florida Keys.
There are several changes in the mill that I want you to be aware of.
First, HQ United States Power Squadrons® has increased their dues structure by approximately $5.00 per membership (Individual or Family) effective in Dec 2017. These new dues amounts will be reflected in the invoice you receive from HQ and should be on/about your anniversary date of joining the Squadron. Individual memberships will be billed at $95 and family memberships at $142.50. Any new memberships will be higher due to the need to impose administrative processing and name-tag fees.
Secondly, HQ United States Power Squadrons® has undertaken an effort to rebrand itself as America’s Boating Club tm. This new logo looks like this:
Our Ship’s Store now has the new logo clothing designed and for sale at: https://capefearsquadron.qbstores.com.
There is no requirement for you to run right out and buy all new merchandise. Whatever you have now, can continue to be worn until unserviceable or too small (as happens to some of us). The old logo clothing items will be removed and will no longer be available. Therefore, you may purchase only the new items.
Additionally, due to the rebranding efforts mentioned above, there are new nametags available. Once again, you are not required to go out and buy a new name tag; however, if you would like to have a new one, you should notify Lt Linda LeBer, S and include your check for $10.
I’m looking forward to a fun year and hope to see y’all at our upcoming meetings/events.

Education Officer’s Report
Lt/C Ned W. Rhodes, SN
Last week, I attended the New Member reception and it was quite lively. We have several new members who have boats and apparently none of them have ever run aground, although a few have done tactical sand exploration and controlled “touch and go’s.” Congratulations to 1/Lt Meg Morrison, JN for a successful ABC class and On-The-Water teaching cruise for
February. We had 54 students and completed our four-hour teaching cruise in 3.5 hours due to hitting the tides correctly. Our first two classes (Engine Maintenance and Piloting) will be wrapping up at the end of the month and then we will move on to Advanced Piloting on 8 May and the 19-20 May ABC class. The Early Bird/Shakedown Cruise will either have happened or is about to happen when you receive this newsletter. I will report on the festivities in the next newsletter, and all the boats and crew are looking forward to a fun time (or have already had it). Contact me at educationofficer@capefearsailandpowersquadron.org to let me know which courses you are interested in taking, if you have questions about our current offerings, or if you want to become an instructor with the Education Department.
A Strong Start for ABC
1/Lt Meg Morrison, JN
Fifty-four students attended and passed our America’s Boating Course® (ABC) on 24-25 February. What makes our class unique is the optional 4-hour teaching cruise in partnership with Wilmington Water Tours. This teaching
cruise takes students down the Cape Fear River and into the Intracoastal Waterway through Snow’s Cut and back. On this trip, we saw several container ships at the Port and a dolphin in the Cape Fear River while learning about
charts, navigation aids, tides and currents, weather and local resources. Many students tell us this cruise “enhanced the classroom
learning” and built their confidence on the water. My gratitude goes to our dedicated volunteer instructors Lt Peter Spark, P; P/C Wilbur Chapman, SN; P/Lt/C Ed LoBalbo SN; Lt Josh Roberts, JN; Dave Munnikhuysen, SN; Lt/C Steve Thompson, S; and to Lt/C Ned Rhodes, SN. In addition, P/C Hamilton Hicks, Jr., JN joined us on the teaching cruise to share his tips on weather. Lt Linda
LeBer, S presented information about Squadron Membership and several students signed up that day. Tell your friends our next class is May 19 and 20th. http://weteachboating.org/

Administrative Officer’s Report Lt/C Janet Anderson, S
We had a very successful Soup and Dessert Cook-Off and Membership Meeting on 26 February. Seventy-two people including ten guests attended the meeting at Watermark. Here are the winners in each category:
Boating Activities: The first Squadron cruise of the year is the Shakedown Cruise to downtown Wilmington. The cruise is led by Cruise Captains Lt/C Ned and Lt Arleen Rhodes, 16-18 March. Nine boats signed up for the event. We will have the date for the “Blessing of the Fleet” soon, as well as information on several other short cruises planned for this spring and summer.
Meetings & Programs: We will be hosting the 26 March General Membership meeting at Bluewater Grill. The speaker will be Bethany Welsh, Port of Wilmington Communications Manager. She will be talking with us about the many activities going on at the Port. The Event flyer and signup is out. Your help in signing up for the meeting will allow us to accurately plan for the meeting. The 23 April meeting promises to be a fun evening at the Waterline Brewery with both a wine and beer tasting in addition to our regular meeting. This is an exciting new meeting venue.
Membership: Listed to the right are the new members since the beginning of 2018. A New Member Reception was held 8 March at Seapath Yacht Club for Squadron members who have joined the squadron since November 2017.
Member Involvement: There will be a tour of the Port of Wilmington on 27 April for the first 30 interested persons. This is a field tour that is a follow up to the Port presentation by Bethany Welsh on 26 March. The signup sheet will be set up shortly on the website in Events. There will be a fee for the tour and transportation will be provided. Thanks to Lt Otis White for all his efforts to set this tour up for the Squadron.
Don’t forget to look for new members at our meetings and welcome them into the
CFS&PS! For information on new members or to serve as sponsors contact:

Our group sent three Get Well cards to members this month. Our own Sara Raleigh is recuperating from gall bladder surgery. P/C Jim Nelson, AP decided he liked New Hanover Hospital so much that he went back to stay for a few days for further treatment for C-diff infection.
Meantime, Associate member, P/C Sara McCurry of Shallotte River Sail and Power Squadron, while just arriving at the hotel in Florida for the National USPS meeting, fell in the lobby and found that she had sustained a broken shoulder. Needless to say she went home tightly wrapped in a sling instead of attending the festivities. Each of these folks was sent our very best wishes for their return to good health. By now, we hope that they are well on their way to feeling very much better.
A Sympathy Card was sent to 1/Lt Paul Tyndall, P and his wife, Sandy, in the loss of Paul’s Mom. We send our condolences to them and their family at this sad time.
If you know of anyone in need of a card, please email me at hijanh@charter.net, or phone 910-350-0902 so that I can spread warmest wishes in our behalf.
