WHAT IS THE COLD WAR ?•The Cold War was the continuing state from roughly 1946 to 1991 of political conflict, military tension, and economic competition between the Communist World and the powers of the Western World, primarily the United States and its NATO allies.

• Stalin wanted to spread communism.• The US and Great Britain wanted independent

states in Eastern Europe.• The US and Great Britain wanted a strong

united Germany.

The reasons behind the differences between Russia and the US at the end of WWII.

President Truman’s respond to soviet domination of eastern Europe.

• In response to the Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, Truman adopted the policy of containment. Containment is a policy that tried to keep communism within its existing borders. Heissued the Marshall Plan, Truman Doctrine, and Berlin Airlift.

• The Marshal plan: A 4 year program where the US helped aid Europe by giving them food, fuel and money, so that they could combat communism.

• The Berlin Airlift: An operation that allowed the US to send supplies to West Berlin, using airplanes, because Stalin had closed roads, stopped barges and blocked rail ways.

The causes and results of Stalin's blockage of berlin.

• Causes: Stalin wanted to capture West Berlin.

• Results: Supplies couldn’t enter West Berlin because Stalin had closed roads, stopped barges and blocked railways.

Terms• Satellite State: apolitical term that refers to a

country that is formally independent, but under heavy political and economic influence or control by another country.

• Iron Curtain: A symbol of the ideological fighting and physical boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas from the end of World War II in 1945 until the end of the Cold War in 1989.
