Coherence concerns the way in which the things that the text is
about (the textual world), are mutually accessible and relevant. The
textual world consists of concepts (cognitive content) and relations
(the link between the concepts).
Following Beaugrande and Dressler, some of the most common
relations can be classified in terms of two major notions:
Causality relations: the way in which a situation affects the
conditions for some other. There are four types:
o Cause
o Enablement
o Reason
o Purpose
Time relations, which concern the arrangement of events in
time. In cause, enablement and reason forward directionality is
involved as an earlier event provides the reason for a later one.
Purpose, on the contrary, has backward directionality, since a
later event is the purpose for an earlier event.
