The Maine Mail Winter 2013 Reports
PresidenT’s rePorT
Well, as I sit down to write my first president’s report, the show season is over and it was incredible. With good shows in Lindsay, Edmonton and Regina. A special “Thank You” to all who took the time and spent the money to promote our great breed to the masses.
Calving season is upon us and I hope you are as excited as I am. Each trip to the corrals feels like Christmas morn-ing. The bull sales are just around the corner and I am glad many of you are choosing this publication as a way to showcase your herds and market your programs.
The office is status quo, as Lois con-tinues to hold down the fort and look after our members with her usual professionalism.
The future looks bright for our Cana-dian Maine-Anjou. We have a a high quality product that continues to set the bar in the industry.
I look forward to running into you up and down the road and invite you to call and visit on any issues you may have
Your president,Scott McCormack
oFFiCe Manager’s rePorT
Hello Everyone!
I hope this magazine finds everyone do-ing well and I would like to wish every-one a Happy New Year. The membership package 2013 has been mailed so you should also have that in hand. Mem-bership fees are due January 1st of each year.
So far this winter has been pretty good; no real bad storms so far and the very cold weather has stayed away so far. That is a winter I like.
Bull sales are also coming up fast so please send your Ads in to go on the Web site as the cost is only $20. per month.
In the office, we have new caps so please let me know if you would like to order a few. Also we can still order jackets which were a big hit.
The Maine-Anjou registration work has been steady this past year and I would like to thank the membership for their continued support.
I was happy to go to Canadian Western Agribition this past year and visit with all the breeders that attended. It was great to see everyone.
Calving season is well under way and everyone will be busy when you receive this magazine. Remember to register your calves between 0 – 6 Months of age so that you receive the price of $20. per calf.
Thank You,Lois Chivilo

There was not a lot of activity in Manitoba in 2012. The biggest event was the Wilkinridge production sale which, although being hurt by highway clo-sures in most of Manitoba and Saskatchewan and therefore a smaller than expected crowd, was still a reasonable success. 70 bred females averaged just under $1800 and only 4 heifer calves sold for an average of $1365. The cattle did get spread around with 2 going to Ontario, 1 to North Dakota, 9 to Alberta, 18 to Saskatchewan and the rest stayed in Manitoba. Volume buyer was Sean and Brandy Eggie of Swan River taking 17 bred females. Sev-eral other buyers were either first time buyers or fairly new to the breed so that is very encouraging for the breed. The annual general meeting of the Manitoba Maine-Anjou Association will have been held Jan. 30 in Brandon. I am writing this prior to that date so cannnot report on it but hopefully it was a success. We look forward to a successful bull sale season with Maine-Anjou bulls being offered for sale at 2 sales this spring. Doug Kerr has several bulls at the Douglas test station sale April 6. Wilkinridge stock farm is having a bull sale April 13 at Grunthal Auc-tion Mart featuring Maine-Anjou and Red Angus bulls. Several other breeders will also have bulls for sale by private treaty and we wish them all a good bull sale season and a successful calving season.Sid Wilkinson, MMAA President

The MB Bull Test Station started the 2012-13 year with 143 bulls from 8 breeds on test. Six of the bulls are Maine-Anjou and consigned by Badgerhill Maine-Anjou, Douglas Kerr, Ninette, MB.On the 56 day weight, Jan. 2, 2013, the test station average daily gain (ADG) was 4.28 lbs and the average weight per day of age (WPDA) 3.40 lbs. ADG on 5 Maine bulls (1 deceased) was 4.47 lbs and WPDA was 3.54 lbs - highest of all breeds. The 84 day weigh will take place Jan. 29/13 with the end of test being Feb. 26/27, 2013. An ultrasound test will be done the week of Feb. 26 and semen testing will be done the week of Mar. 18. Open house will run from Mar. 25 - Apr. 5. The sale will be held Apr. 6 and will be broadcast by Cattle In Motion. To bid on-line you must register before sale day at www.cattleinmotion.com. The test station is located 17 miles east of Brandon on Hwy#1 and 1/2 miles southeast on Hwy #351. Cattle in Motion will make a video of all sale bulls and they will be available for viewing on the web-site starting the last week of March. Sale catalogs will be printed and available at this time as well. This year all test bulls & heifers will be eligible for sale if the producers wish. The data collected for WPDA and ADG will not determine sale eligibility but will be published in the weight reports. All bulls & heif-ers must pass a veterinarian evaluation including semen test, scrotal, structural, female paplation & pelvic measurements to qualify for sale. The sale floor price for bulls will be $2000. The office phone # is (204) 763-4696 (Bev or Ivan), Ivan’s cell (204) 724-6271. Check out their website at www.manitobabulltest.com. The test station is open to visi-tors 7 days a week. The Ontario Maine-Anjou Association hosted a tremen-dous National Show at the Lindsay Exhibition on Sep-tember 21st, 2012. With a brand new state of the art facility having been built in Lindsay over the last few years, organizers thought themselves very lucky to have a fantastic venue from which to highlight the breed that we all know and love. Given recent changes at the Roy-al Agricultural Winter Fair, the Ontario Association found themselves in need of exploring new options for a setting from which to promote and exhibit fullblood, purebred, and percentage Maine-Anjou cattle at a highly competi-tive level. The Lindsay Exhibition fairboard was happy to open their doors to this year’s National Show and to work with the show committee to solidify plans. With a total of sixty-nine entries from a group of four-teen exhibitors, Ontario saw the highest attendance and most impressive quality of cattle that they had seen at a Maine show of any kind in some time. This event was highly respected and anticipated by Maine enthusiasts and well-supported through both participation and finan-cial contribution. Maine breeders gathered together to spend time in fel-lowship over a period of two days. The show saw visitors from all across Ontario and Quebec and visits from

many long-time Maine supporters who came to take in the excitement. Judge Pete Frijters of Listowel, Ontario commented several times on the outstanding quality of cattle and was dealt a tough task in evaluation of this exceptional group. Complete show results available at www.maine-anjou.ca.The show committee would like to thank the many spon-sors (listed below) and supporters of this fantastic event. Contributions to the show, whether they be financial, participatory, in kind, or in spirit, made this event a raving success! The kindness and generosity of all involved will not be forgotten. Additionally, the support of the Lindsay Exhibition must be noted. The staff, board, and volun-teers for the Ex could not have been more helpful and, once more, we thank them.As we look forward, Ontario hopes to continue to hold a provincial banner show in Lindsay and is eager to host the National Show again in the future. The Ontario Maine-Anjou Association wishes exhibitors taking part in spring youth shows the very best of luck in their competitions.Megan Burnside, OMAA President

Two new bloodlines from France. These cattle have performance!Note: All the Fullblood Maine-Anjou cattle at Agribition were at the top in WPDA
For years we have all been under the inluence of making the Maine-Anjou cattle smaller, into something they were not meant to be.
The Maine-Anjou cattle have lost what made us a complete cut above other breeds when irst imported.
The show ring screwed up all kinds of cattle in the early 80’s and has screwed it up again in a totally different way, making the biggest breed (Maine-Anjou) into belt-buckle cattle with little
performance. In speaking with Dave Steen, the commercial development director of the AMAA, hisconcern was that the performance has gone out of the Maine-Anjou cattle, and that
breeders need to recognize this and get the WPDA back on top. Many breeders are producing Maine-Anjou cattle that have been reduced to nice little boxy
cattle similar to cattle of the 1960’s. Much of our breed has been downsized to nothing better than Angus or even Speckle Park with
low weaning and yearling weights. We all as breeders need to get back to producing Maine-Anjou cattle that completely
outperform other breeds, as they did in the past.
