ADAM: THE RUGGED CLUTCH WITH THEGENTLE TOUCH.
With higher heat dissipation, greater torque and betterresponse times than any other clutch in its class, the
Tol-O-Matic Adam clutch may very well be the most versa-tile clutch available on the market today. The parallel disc-plate design provides fast starts (but soft where needed) whilethe finned, cast-iron plate on 400, 600 and 800 Series modelsquickly dissipates heat generated in high cyclic applications.
But the benefits of the Adam clutch don’t end with great per-formance. Unlike other disc-plate clutches, the Adam clutchalso includes innovative servicing features designed to saveyou time and effort. Features like quick-change non-asbestosfriction material for fast, easy friction material replacementwithout dismounting and dismantling the clutch. There’s alsoa wear-adjustment nut on 400, 600 and 800 Series modelswhich allows you to compensate for friction material wearby easily adjusting the disc-plate gap to its original setting of1⁄32” (0.794mm).
DISC/CONE: IMMEDIATE, POSITIVEENGAGEMENT WITHOUT SLIPPAGE
Developed by Tol-O-Matic engineers more than 20 yearsago the Disc/Cone clutch is the only cone clutch in the
industry. In this unique design, the cone, attached to the pilot,engages a cup member for immediate, positive engagementwith no slippage.
Features of the Disc/Cone clutch include:
• High Torque • Space-saving design
• No slippage • Fast response based on low air consumption
The Disc/Cone clutch is available in two models; the 1200series and the 1300 series.
The 1300 series offers high torque in a space saving design.
The 1200 series has a cast iron, heat dissipating finned platewhich gives it almost 10 times the heat dissipating capacityof the comparable 1300 series model.

to your application, cross-referencethe application’s speed in revolu-tions per minute (RPM) and trans-mitted horsepower on the charts
below. Use the steps and the formu-lae on the following pages to insuretorque and heat dissipation is ade-quate for your application.

COMPILE APPLICATIONREQUIREMENTS
To determine the appropriate Tol-O-Matic clutch for an application com-pile the following information:
1. Available operating pressure
2. Input power shaft size
3. Starting time (seconds) required
4. Weight (lbs.) and radii (ft.) of therotating members
5. Speed (RPM)
6. Rotation reductions in multi-shaft systems
7. Cycle Rate/Hr.
Keep these general features in mindwhen determining whether an Adamclutch or a Disc/Cone clutch will bebest suited for your application
CALCULATE THETORQUE REQUIRED
Calculate the required torque for yourapplication using the formula:
(see page 4 for completeinstructions to calculate torque).
CALCULATE THE HEATDISSIPATION REQUIRED
When a clutch is engaged, somedegree of slippage occurs which gen-erates heat. The clutch must be prop-erly sized so that it can not only trans-mit the torque required, but also dissi-pate the heat generated and maintain aclutch temperature within acceptableoperating limits for the friction mater-ial (300° F). Calculate heat generated(which must then be dissipated) usingthe formula:
(see page 4 for complete instructionsfor energy calculations).
SELECT THE CLUTCHSIZE AND TYPE
Begin the selection once the torqueand energy calculations have beencompleted. For Adam clutches con-sult the Torque vs Pressure charts onpages 7 to 13. For Disc/Cone clutch-es consult the Torque vs Pressurecharts on pages 17 to 22.
Cross reference torque required andthe available operating pressure. If theintersection falls below the diagonalline the clutch will accommodate thetorque required for the application.
Next, consult the Heat Dissipationchart for the same clutch. (For Adamclutches Heat Dissipation charts areon pages 7 to 13. For Disc/Coneclutches Heat Dissipation charts areon pages 17 to 21.)
Cross reference the BTU/hr. and theRPM at which the application willrun. If the intersection falls below theline the clutch will accommodate theapplication. If the intersection isabove the line, a clutch with higherheat dissipation should be considered.
Now, simply select the bore size thatfits your application.
SELECT OPTIONS
Aclutch must have a means to trans-mit power. This may be done witheither sheaves or sprockets.
Sheaves
Tol-O-Matic offers several varieties ofsheave mounts on both the Adam andDisc/Cone models. See pages 26 and29 to 31 for models available. Thesesheaves are factory-mounted to thepilot. The pilots have bolt holes thatcan easily handle other sizes ofsheaves.
Sprockets
Tol-O-Matic offers several varieties ofsprockets for Disc/Cone clutches.(See pages 25 and 29 to 31 for modelsavailable.) Like sheave mounts, thesesprockets are factory-mounted to thepilot and the pilots have bolt holesthat can easily handle other sizes ofsprockets. Adam clutches have certainrequirements for sprocket plateswhich may be mounted to the pilotplate (see Sprocket Information forthe Adam clutch selected).
CONSIDER OPTIONALCLUTCH/BRAKE
Some applications may require con-trolled deceleration as well as acceler-ation. Adam clutches are availablewith a 10" disc and Tol-O-Matic’sP20DAcaliper disc brake. Disc/Coneclutches are available with an 8", 10",12" and 16" disc and either a Tol-O-Matic P20DAor P220DAcaliper discbrake. (See pages 23 to 27 and 29 to31 for models available.)

The radius of gyration is the distance from the centerof rotation at which the entire rotating mass could beconcentrated and still be equivalent to the actual dis-tributed mass (see diagrams, below).
For multiple shaft systems, use the following formula:

Tol-O-Matic’s 400, 600 and 800 SeriesAdam clutches offer a breakthrough ineasy clutch maintenance. Now, it is nolonger necessary to dismount and dis-assemble a clutch in order to change itsfriction material.
The friction material is in two semi-cir-cular pads, which are held to the fric-tion plate by flathead screws. Thesescrews are accessible through two
access holes in the finned plate, as thephotograph below shows.
To change the friction pads, simply
rotate the pilot plate to align the screwswith the access holes in the finnedplate. Insert a screwdriver through theaccess hole and remove the screwsholding the friction pads. The frictionpads may then be easily removed.Place new friction pads on the pilotplate and replace the screws. Repeatthe process for the second friction padand the job is finished. (NOTE: Duringreplacement, it may be necessary toadjust the end nut to restore the properclearance for the new friction pads.)
The Tol-O-Matic Adam clutchmay very well be the most versa-

Adam clutches offer a model to suitevery need. Pneumatically actuated toa maximum pressure of 100 PSI (7BAR), Adam clutches offer a widerange of power transmission in a vari-ety of configurations. Each modeloffers a basic shaft bore size with a
selection of sleeve bushings and keysto accommodate smaller shaft sizes.You can also specify a solid bushingwhich may be machined to meet yourexact application specifications,including Metric sizes. For soft startapplications, optional low coefficientfriction material is available for 400,600 and 800 Series models (see page28 for ordering information).

20 years ago, and its still the onlydisc/cone clutch available in theindustry today. In this unique designthe cone engages a cup on the pilotplate for immediate, positive engage-
ment with no slippage. Tol-O-MaticDisc/Cone Clutches offer high torqueand compact profiles in lower cyclicapplications.
The Disc/Cone clutch is available intwo models; the 1200 series and the1300 series.
The 1300 series offers a space savingdesign, while the 1200 series has acast iron, heat dissipating finned platewhich gives it almost 10 times theheat dissipating capacity of the 1300series model.
