Salute To 20
August 2017
Dear 4-H Volunteers, Youth and Families:
August is already here, leaving behind camps, judgings and
other events in June and July. We have had a blast so far
and it’s flying by so quickly!
Congratulations to all of our participants from Lorain County
that are representing our county at the 2017 Ohio State Fair.
We have over 45 state fair participants and I couldn’t be more
proud of all that our youth have accomplished.
As August is already upon us, it’s almost time for the Lorain
County Fair! Please read this newsletter carefully. There is
important information about upcoming activities and require-
ments for fair and other events. If you have questions or con-
cerns, please let us know! I look forward to seeing all of you
at the Lorain County Fair!

BEHAVIOR AND CONDUCT
FOR ALL 4-H VOLUNTEERS, PARENTS, AND
4-H MEMBERS!!!
Please remember to exhibit good sportsmanship at all judg-
ings and throughout the year at club meetings, contests,
shows, and during county fair. It is crucial for adults to con-
duct themselves in a respectful manner. Children learn
their behaviors from adults.
Please have appropriate interactions with the judge. It is
okay to speak with the judge and ask questions, especially
if the judge extends an invitation to do so. It is NOT AC-
CEPTABLE to question the judge’s authority, argue with
the judge, or point out the judge’s mistakes. A situation in
which a judge truly acts inappropriately will be addressed
by the Fair Board and Extension Educator.
GET READY FOR THE SPOTLIGHT!
You are responsible for your ani-
mal’s well-being and care every
minute it is on the fairgrounds!
Make every interaction a positive
one. Be respectful to other exhibi-
tors, the public, and fair officials!
Be ready to tell your 4-H project
story to the mom with her child
that stops at your stall, the judge
who asks you in the show
ring or the reporter who
asks what you’ve done
to get here.
GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP
Good sportsmanship is about playing by the rules, discipline, respect, and self-
control. A good sport has fun because they enjoy participating in the activity
more than the final outcome.
As we approach the judging and fair season, remember to be a good sportsman. Whether you are taking
non-animal projects, showing a steer, or running for a position on a royal court, remember to show pride in
yourself and your project by playing fair and showing respect to not only yourself, but to those who are com-
peting against you.
Here are some good sportsmanship tips to remember for the next few weeks:
1. Show respect to yourself by treating others the way you want to be treated.
2. Respect the rules of the activity and project by always playing fair.
3. Offer encouragement to other participants, especially when they make mistakes.
4. Forgive yourself when you make a mistake and get right back in the game.
5. Lose without pouting and win without gloating.

DRESS CODES FOR
COUNTY FAIR SHOWS,
JR. FAIR LIVESTOCK
AUCTIONS, AND
4-H PROJECT JUDGINGS
Please review with your mem-
bers! Appropriate attire is re-
quired and the dress codes for
the show ring, livestock
auctions, and 4-H pro-
ject judgings can be
found in the Junior Fair-
book on page 13.
C-1 IN-OUT PASSES
Reminder…we will have ONLY a limited number of C-1 passes to distribute to clubs with livestock projects. These
passes will allow vehicles on the grounds for a maximum of
30 minutes to unload hay, feed, straw, etc. Advisors may
pick up the pass(es) for their club at the Jr. Fair Office on
Saturday Noon-5:00 p.m. and Sunday 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Most clubs with livestock will be given only one pass, so
sharing is important. After NOON on Monday, passes not
picked up by clubs will be redistributed to other advisors and
parents requesting C-1 gate passes.
Purpose of the Fair The county fair is coming very soon. Now is a good time to talk with your members and parents about fair activi-ties and what will happen to the peo-ple involved. The fair is full of ribbons, trophies, and winners. It’s also a place to learn. Everyone can’t place first in their class or division, but everyone can be a winner and learn. A winner is not just the person who places first. A winner is the boy or girl who does their best, smiles, and sincerely congratu-lates their competition. Fairs can teach us to be winners, but they can also teach us how to win– even if we don’t place first! Winners at the fair are those who make an effort to make new friends, those who help a younger or less-experienced exhibitor to better groom or show their animal, and those who didn’t place first but said, “I’ll be back next year.” Winners are those who demonstrate a positive attitude, good sports-manship and know that the fair is not a life and death matter, but something to enjoy.
F.Y.I. – TESTING OF CHAMPIONS
In accordance with Ohio Dept. of Agriculture
directives, Lorain County Jr. Fair will conduct
urine and tissue testing of the grand and re-
serve champion market steers, hogs, and
sheep. You will see procedures being followed
in testing and monitoring these champions.
ODA will be doing random testing of other mar-
ket animals at randomly selected county fairs
this year. Just be prepared, and know that this
is part of ODA’s attempt to
monitor and improve meat
quality and safety coming
from our county and state
fairs in Ohio!

If, for any reason, the carcass does not pass State Inspection at the time of processing, the carcass will not be considered for placing. It becomes the sole responsibility (financial and otherwise) of the seller (4-H or FFA member), not the buyer, processor, or the Lorain County Jr. Fair Board. Par-ticipation in this class is at the risk of the exhibitor and/or exhibitor’s parents/guardians. All exhibitors must have a private buyer lined up and give the buyer’s contact information so the processor can contact the buyer with a pick-up schedule. Processing fees will be about $90. This cost should be worked out between the exhibitor and the buyer (not mandatory at the time of show). Exhibitors must let their buyer know up front that “said carcass” may be put in the fair auction and the buyer will either forfeit the carcass or come bid on it at the auction. Exhibitors are encouraged to come view the carcasses at the processor with-in the following week. Junior Fair Dairy Participants: Attention Clubs with Dairy Projects: Soon you’ll receive an email from the Lorain County Dairy Auction Committee asking for your help in contacting potential auction bid-ders. Last year, several companies and individuals who have traditionally supported the auction did not participate. Committee members later heard that some of these bidders were not contacted prior to the fair to ask for their support. Invitations from youth with dairy projects are critical to the auction’s success. To help make this easier, head advisors of clubs with dairy projects will receive an email with a sample letter and list of previous bidders. Please encourage your 4-Hers to reach out to previous and new bidders to ask them to come to the auction at noon on Friday, August 25. If you have questions about the auction, please contact auction committee members Jim McConnell at 216-215-8546 or Heather McCann at 330-310-6793.

is in the booth. Exhibit cards can be picked up early at county judging on August 9th or you can get them at the
Jr. Fair Office on the day you set up your booth.
***NOTE: No one is permitted to enter the display booths in the home ec. building once the items are placed in the fenced area on Sunday, August 20th. Anyone violating this request will forfeit their premium. If you have
any problems or concerns during fair week, come to the Jr. Fair Board Office.
You need to pick up a “FLAMMABILITY TREATMENT CARD” in the Jr. Fair Office during booth set up time, fill it out, and post it in your booth according to the instructions on the card. You need to know the name of the prod-

Here’s a recipe for a flame resistant solution you can make yourself:
7 oz. Borax, 3 oz. Boric Acid, 2 quarts Hot Water
Dissolve the boric acid by making a paste with a small quantity of water. Add this and the borax to the water.
Stir until the solution is clear. Warm the solution if it becomes cloudy or jelly-like from standing.
For those clubs that have only a small number of family & consumer science projects, we
will set up a general booth. Just fill out an exhibit card and leave the item and card at the WEST end of Building #11 (Ag Products) where State Fair Projects are checked in on Sat-

The Lorain County 4-H Endowment Board is looking for members to assist in our normal activities. Members of the board do not need to be 4-H Advisors, or have a connection to 4-H on a regular basis. Some require-ments will be bi-monthly meetings, a fundraiser, Thank-You booth at the fair, and helping with Scholarships and Grants. Every member that comes on to the board is a crucial member of making our county one of the most successful Endowment boards in this state. If you are interested in being a member please contact Lizz Share with any questions. The new members would begin in November.

K-9 CORNER—4-H DOG PROJECT INFO.
This is an exciting time as we all get ready for fair here are a few tips to pass on to your exhibitors.
All Dogs must be crated, contained in a pen or kept in your set up area at all times during fair unless you are walking to
exercise or going to the ring for judging. Junior Fair Board will be enforcing this during the shows. This is for safety and
comfort of the dog as well as for other exhibitors and spectators. Dogs are absolutely not allowed in the bleacher area.
There will be crating available inside the Show Barn as well as along the north side of the building. Important to think
about where you set up your area, remember that space is limited to stack crates when possible only two chairs are al-
lowed in the Barn crating area per exhibitor due to space limitations. DO NOT set up next to high traffic areas such as in
the door way, right next to a ring entrance. YOU WILL BE ASKED TO MOVE! Do not set up right against a ring be
considerate and give space between the ring and your crating area so as not to cause a distraction for the exhibitor and
dog showing in the ring. Do not stand holding your dog when it is not time for you to show especially in high traffic areas
such as door ways etc. Dogs must remain in their crating area unless under judgement. Fair is a high stress situation
and even the most even tempered dog can have an incident with another dog. It is your job to minimize those potential
situations. Be vigilant at all times and aware of where other dogs and exhibitors are at.
Bring your own water with you. Water is available at the barn but it is better to bring
water from home. Pack all your equipment, collars, leads, water bowl and grooming
equipment head of time in a tack bag or other container so you don’t forget to bring
them with you to fair.
Dog Clubs will be provided with a couple gate passes to be shared by members for
loading and unloading crates at the Show Barn.
IMPORTANT: BRING YOUR PROJECT RECORD BOOK TO FAIR – all dog mem-
bers will be participating in knowledge interview and project book judging at fair that
includes showmanship, rally, obedience and agility exhibitors. There will be a prac-
tice run through at the Pre Fair Qualifier for the interviews only we will not be doing
project books at that time.

2017 LCMP Halloween Fair Student Club Fundraiser Opportunity
Each October, the Lorain County Metro Parks welcomes thousands of visi-tors to the Carlisle Visitor Center for the annual “Halloween Fair” event. Along the grounds and down the trails, park staff and volunteers provide spooks and startles aided by decorative sets and costuming! This year, we would like to extend an invitation to your middle to high school 4-H club students, so that they may participate in the fun and earn some cash for doing so. This opportunity is a perfect fundraiser for your programming, and will surely benefit the park district, too!
The 2017 Halloween Fair is set to occur between the hours of 5 and 10pm each Friday and Saturday night, October 13th through 28th. Your students would be scheduled to perform roles at a specific station located along the Short Loop Trail of the Carlisle Reservation. An adult chap-erone (not a student) would be needed to provide guidance for your students, and a park staff member would be on hand to oversee all operations of the station.
As for the fundraising details - each student assigned to work will earn $5.50 for each hour while ‘on stage’ on behalf of their 4-H Club. The number of students required at the station and the roles that will be available for students to perform will be determined by the supervising park staff, and outlined in detail prior to the event. You will need to provide us with a list of students’ names scheduled for each night before the event begins. Students will be required to check in before the start of the shift, follow all scripts, assignments, and park designated rules, and sign out at the end of the shift period before leaving the station. (Students are welcomed to join Friends of Metro Parks, Inc. for their nightly “after party” featuring a free warm meal following each shift! Snacks and warm beverages also provided during the event, courtesy of Friends.)
Halloween Fair station specifics such as number of students needed each night, roles and direction, costuming needs, and more are clearly described once a determination of assignment is made. Visit our website at http://metroparks.cc/halloween.php for more information about the upcoming Hallow-een Fair event.
Please contact Aimee at apotonic@metroparks.cc or (440) 949-5200 x225 or (440) 387-8107 with questions, concerns, or to sign up for this unique fundraising opportunity. We look for-
ward to your participation in this year’s Halloween Fair event!
