Teacher’s Notes

Target Audience/Learner Description:› 6th Graders

Objectives:› Given a PowerPoint presentation, the students will become

familiar with the ASL alphabet and its origins› Students will identify the signs for the ASL alphabet› At the end of the PowerPoint they will take a quiz answering

each question correctly until they have reached the end Learning Environment:

› The learner will use this lesson as a foundation for future ASL courses

› The learner will be using what they learn to communicate with others

Why is it important?

ASL (American Sign Language) is important because it is the language of deaf communities

The alphabet is the foundation of the language› Finger Spelling is when you use the letters of the

alphabet to spell out difficult words or a way to communicate with new ASL speakers

What Can I Do With ASL?

With ASL you can: › speak with the

hearing impaired› have another means

of communicating if for some reason you are unable to speak or hear someone

› have the ability to be an aid Translator

The History of Deaf Education Dr. Thomas Hopkins

Gallaudet introduced deaf education to the U.S in 1814

The first deaf school was established in Hartford, Connecticut in 1817 by Dr. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc

The first deaf college, Gallaudet University, was established in Washington D.C. in 1893 by Edward Gallaudet

Hearing loss is greater in men

2-3 children out of 1,000 are born deaf

9 out of every 10 that are born deaf are born to hearing parents

There are 4,000 new cases a year of sudden hearing loss

The ABCs of ASL

The letters of the ASL alphabet came from the LSF(French Sign Language)

The French signs were combined with pre-existing signs to form ASL

Ways to involve the students:

› After the students have watched the video the teacher can sign through the alphabet or replay the video having their students mimic each letter

› The students are given words to spell out to each other to practice the individual letters
