Problem Solving

2.A.2.4 FCA 16

How can I use the UNRAAVEL method to solve real-world

problems?

Sometimes it can be difficultto figure out what to do when

you are faced with a word problem.

We will use the UNRAAVEL method to figure this out!

Pedro rode 19 miles on his bicycle last week. This week,

he rode 10 less miles than last week. What is 10

less than 19?

Wally had 18 basketball cards. He had 46 baseball cards. How many more

baseball cards than basketball cards did Wally

have?Joey gets on the school bus

at 3:30. The ride from school to home takes 30

minutes. At what time did Joey get home?

Tammy is 2 years holder than Kurt. Kurt is 4 years younger than Hal. Hal is 9

years old. How old is Tammy?

We are going to practice

UNRAAVEL with this one!

N = Now Predict

What Do You ThinkYou Need to Do

to Solve the Problem?

• Do you think the answer will be larger

or smaller?

• Do you think you will need to add

or subtract?

• Are there any hints that you may need

to estimate?

I predict that I will need to SUBTRACT.

I saw the words: HOW MANY MOREin the question.

R = Read the Word Problem

Read the entire

problem!!!

Wally had 18 basketball cards. He

had 46 baseball cards. How many

more baseball cards than basketball cards did Wally

have?

Read it, Dudes and Dudettes!

V = Verify Your Answer. (Is it reasonable? Does it make

sense?)28 IS reasonable

because it is smaller

than 46. It would make sense to have

this amount left after finding the

difference of 46 and 18.

E = Eliminate Wrong

Answers.

Too big.

I got that one correct, but I may have to rework the next one!
