Cleaning Your Keyboard Could Help Prevent

Sickness

Did you know that the average keyboard contains 3,000 bacteria per square inch?

According to an article in the Daily Mail a few years back, your keyboard is five times dirtier than the average toilet seat.

The bacteria that you might typically find on a keyboard at work can cause illness such as stomach bugs, viruses, flu, e.coli, colds and even things like chickenpox and norovirus.

The Which? Consumer Group have previously warned of the dangers of germs and bacteria found on keyboards in the office after doing studies of London offices in 2008 that showed scary results.

Their investigation saw microbiologists actually quarantine, remove and clean one keyboard that was 150 times higher than the acceptable limit of bacteria.

It truly is disgusting and will make you think twice about having lunch at your desk unless you clean it daily with antibacterial cleaning products.

According to the scientists conducting the study for Which Group, the results of their study was typical of offices across the nation, and they issued a warning to raise awareness of the risks and to encourage workers and employees to ensure that offices were kept cleaner.

It is a known fact that eating lunch at your desk is the number one reason for high levels of bacteria to be found in the keyboard.

Other reasons include not washing hands after visiting the toilet and generally not washing hands throughout the day.

Always a a good idea!

Touching door handles, phones and even hand rails going up stairs where others have touched means you’re picking bacteria up all the time, so washing you hands regularly and using antibacterial hand gels can help.

How do I keep my keyboard clean?

The number one rule is not to eat at your desk, according to Which.

They also say that you should unplug your keyboard and shake it upside down to remove trapped debris, before wiping over it with a clean cloth dampened with antibacterial spray.

But essentially, unless you have cleaners in every day all employees need to muck in with the office chores by keeping their own desks clean.
