Relief Sculpture

• A 3-d surface that projects out from a flat back

• Only 180 degrees, unlike “in the round sculpture” that you can see 360 degrees

• Can only be viewed from the front

• Hangs on the wall

Slabwork:

• The process of creating a ceramic form by rolling out flat sheets of clay of uniform thickness.

Modeling:

• Creating a form by pinching or squeezing clay with your hands.

Coiling:

• Building a clay form by rolling out long ropes of clay

3 techniques for creating texture on clay:

• Carving

• Impressed

• Applied

Carving:

• The process of taking away part of the clay (such as cutting a hole), or drawing into the surface of the clay with a sharp or looped tool.

Impressed:

• The process of creating texture by pushing or stamping objects into the clay surface.

Applied:

• The technique of adding onto clay to create a raised surface.

Wedging:

• The process of removing air bubbles from clay by kneading it.

The 3 “S”s of attaching clay:

• Score - Roughing Up the Clay

• Slip - Clay + Water

• Seal - Smoothing the Seems

4 Stages of Clay:

• Plastic - Quality of clay that allows it to be manipulated and still maintain its shape without cracking or sagging

• Leatherhard - Midway drying point of the clay

• Greenware (Bonedry) - Clay that is completely dried but not fired yet

• Bisque – Clay objects that have been fired for the 1st time without any glaze applied to them
