Instructor Details Professor: María Castillo
E-mail: mgc223@nyu.edu
Office Hours: Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:00 am-9:30 am
Class Details Elementary Spanish Mon-Thurs. 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a. m.
This course is a four-credit intensive course designed for students with no
knowledge of or less than one year of high school Spanish or its equivalent as
shown in a placement test.
Prerequisites N/A
Class Description
Our immediate and ultimate goal is on building communication skills in Spanish
through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Interaction and building
learning communities are emphasized in all of our classroom and at-home
activities. There will be extensive verbal practice, which will be carried out
beyond the sentence level. Use and understanding of basic grammatical
terminology will also be a necessary component of the course.
For absolute beginners, the first few weeks may seem like a whirlwind of new
sounds and structures. Those with some background may be expecting an easy
debut. Be assured that after the first few weeks the gap is usually filled, and it is
vital for all that you establish a serious, daily study routine from the outset and
speak Spanish!
¡Bienvenidos al curso!
Desired
Outcomes
In this course students will:
- Practice speaking and listening skills in the classroom setting and in small
group work;
- Improve writing skills through compositions that allow self-correction;
- Improve reading comprehension skills through exposure to different types of
reading materials;
- Practice communicative functions through the grammar structures, among
them:
How to talk about habitual and ongoing events, by using the present
tense of regular and irregular verbs.
How to express likes and dislikes by using the verb “gustar”.
How to describe one’s daily routine, by using reflexive verbs.
How to narrate in the past, by using the preterite of regular and
irregular verbs

Assessment
Components
Failure to submit or fulfill any required course component will result in failure
of the class, regardless of grades achieved in other assignments.
Classwork: performance, participation, and preparation 10%
Written Assignments ( 4 párrafos: 10%; 2 redacciones: 10% 20%
Tests ( 3 exámenes) 30%
Oral (1 presentación (6%), 1 proyecto oral (8%), 3 actividades
co-curriculares (6%))
20%
Final Exam 20%
Class Participation: Students should attend and actively participate in every class. They are responsible for being prepared for the class. The minimum time required for personal study and homework should at least equal the number of class hours per week. Students are responsible for completion of activities and exercises specified on the syllabus, as well as self-correction with the clues given in the book or in NYU Classes. They will be checked in class to go over specific doubts. Written Assigments: There are four short paragraphs (80-100-110-120 words) and two compositions of 200 and 250 words respectively. Students will receive guidelines for error correction for the first composition. They need to revise it and hand in the revision accompanied by the first draft. The second composition will be written in class and will not
have a second reviewed version. In keeping with NYU´s academic guidelines of integrity, students may not receive assistance from anyone else with regard to the writing of these compositions. Therefore these compositions should reflect student´s actual language level. Tests: Students will have 3 one-hour tests on the material covered every 2 units. It may take any of several written forms including but not limited to multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank activities, sentence completion, short compositions, etc. Oral Presentations and Co-curricular activities: There is one oral presentation (3 minutes) and a 5/ 7 minutes oral project. There are as well 3 brief presentations after each co-curricular activity outside the classroom. You will receive specific instructions from your professor for the complexion of each assigned task. Final Exam: The two-hour comprehensive exam will cover all course units. No dictionaries are allowed.

class are encouraged to contact the Moses Center for Students with Disabilities
at (212) 998-4980 as soon as possible to better ensure that such
accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion. For more information,
see Study Away and Disability.
Attendance Policy
Class participation includes attendance and compliance with classroom etiquette (i.e. showing up on time, being attentive, no eating during class, no emailing during class, no cell phone use, and no disruptive behavior). A high score for class participation is awarded to those students who contribute to class discussion in a significant way. PLEASE NOTE: If you are unable to attend class, you are required to email your professors directly. Academic work can only be made up if you have an official medical excuse (i.e. a doctor´s note). If a student is present every day, a maximum of 25 points can be earned every week. There are 2 categories in which students will be evaluated for their participation: 1. Preparation and Language Use 2. Interaction: group work. Being absent to one two-hour session lowers the possible maximum of 25 to 19 points; two absences = 13 points; three absences, 7 points; and the student receives a zero if s/he has four class absences. THESE POINT VALUES STAND FOR ABSENCES! (See next section regarding how an excused absence is credited to you.)
EXCUSED ABSENCES
For an absence to be excused, you will need a written excuse from a doctor’s office or a written excuse from the language coordinator. Examples of excused absences justified by the language coordinator are: a family emergency, a religious holiday or an obligatory event from your university. In these cases only, make up of written and oral exams, oral presentations, homework hand in, etc. will be allowed. Travelling arrangements, friends/ relatives visiting or other personal plans during the school days WILL NOT be considered excused absences. (Longer excused absences will be justified on a personal basis). See on NYU Classes for further information about the grading system for attendance, preparation and class participation. Scoring (25pts x 6= 150; Total 300 / 2) 150____________100 = A 118____________79 = C+ 138____________92 = A- 114____________75 = C 133____________89 = B+ 108____________72 = C- 129____________85 = B 103____________69 = D+ 123____________82 = B- 99____________65 = D
Late Submission
of Work
Late work will affect your class-preparation grade. Students are responsible for handing in all homework assignments on time according to the syllabus.

Plagiarism Policy At NYU, a commitment to excellence, fairness, honesty, and respect within and outside the classroom is essential to maintaining the integrity of our community.
Plagiarism: presenting others' work without adequate acknowledgement of its source, as though it were one’s own. Plagiarism is a form of fraud. We all stand on the shoulders of others, and we must give credit to the creators of the works that we incorporate into products that we call our own. Some examples of plagiarism:
· a sequence of words incorporated without quotation marks · an unacknowledged passage paraphrased from another's work · the use of ideas, sound recordings, computer data or images created by others as though it were one’s own · submitting evaluations of group members’ work for an assigned group project which misrepresent the work that was performed by another group member · altering or forging academic documents, including but not limited to admissions materials, academic records, grade reports, add/drop forms, course registration forms, etc. ·using translation software. For further information, students are encouraged to check www.nyu.edu/about/policies-guidelines-compliance/policies-and-guidelines/academic-integrity-for-students-at-nyu.html

Activities
Daily communicative interaction in Spanish is strongly recommended in order to practice and gain language fluency. Student might join the “Intercambio” activity programmed by NYU. The professor will advise students who might be falling behind to take free tutoring lessons at NYU. Participating in any cultural activity in Spanish not only implies a linguistic practice but also a better knowledge of Spanish cultural and artistic reality.
