My guiding thought

Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.

Mustad Concrete Tunnel

Mustad Concrete Tunnel

Mustad Concrete Tunnel

Mustad Concrete Tunnel• Client: Mustad Eiendom

• Owner: Statens Vegvesen (Norwegian Public Roads Administration)

• Contractor: Skanska

• Type of construction: Cast in place reinforced concrete tunnel

• Amount of concrete: 25.000 m3

• Amount of rebars: 5 150 tons

Mustad Concrete Tunnel• Complicated geometry

• Great slopes in both directions >= 8%

• Sharp slope changes

• Small radiuses, r<20m

• Intersections with all of the above challenges

• A four five meter transitions from rectangular to curved cross section.

“BIM” vs 2D• Started out as a AutoCAD 2D/3D DWG

project.

• To reinforce this in AutoCAD was time consuming and difficult.

• I claimed this would be faster in Tekla Structures. • And, I was right.

“BIM” reinforcement workflow

• 3D DWG as a reference in Tekla.

• Remodel the tunnel with Tekla native objects

• Automated reinforcement (with custom components) wherever possible

• Automated reinforcement marks (by classifying the rebars)

• Drawings entirely based on the Tekla model

• Automated Rebar schedules from Tekla

We intend to cut all the rusty steps in the future!

Classification• Two concepts: PREFIX and CLASS

• Prefix to determine position of the reinforcement.• Construction number (i.e. K51)

• Section number (i.e. 03)

• Object type (i.e. wall, slab etc.)

• If listed by meters “L”

• Class for enriching the drawings and IFC models• Barcode concept

Showcase Mustad

• Present the Tekla model

• Present the classification system

• Present some basic custom components

• Present inquire and rebar marks from drawings

• Present a few examples of custom components (sharpening the axe)

Showcase InterCity

• Present the Tekla model

• Present the cast unit concept

• Present a few custom components

The two pillars of efficient BIM reinforcement

• Automated modelling• Reduces time spent modelling with maybe 90 %• Precludes human error

• “Never trust a man to do a machines job” – The Matrix

• Leads to uniform solutions• Perfect positioning and classification of the rebars

• Precise classification in order to• Achieve correct marks in the drawings and IFCs• Use filters efficiently• Subdivide the rebar schedule
