Transcript of Christmas In Asturias

Christmas in Spain Navidad en España

Most people celebrate Christmas Eve and Day.

The 24th is Nochebuena and the 25th Navidad. Some people receive presents from Father Christmas, but this is a new tradition from the Anglo-Saxon culture.

We also celebrate New Year’s Eve and Day

December 31st is Nochevieja and January 1st is Año Nuevo.

But our favourite is January 6th...

when the Three Wise Men, the Magie, (Los tres reyes magos) bring lots of presents to all the children who have been really good, for the not so good... tons of coal.

We decorate our schools...

with Christmas trees, presents, candles and nativity scenes.

We prepare some talent shows at school...

with poems, jokes, role-plays, songs... and a lot of fun.

We buy red plants for this time of the year

and then we have holidays...

from December 22 to January 7th

Our most typical food for Christmas time is the turrón (nougat)

We have different kind, it can be hard, like the one in the picture, or soft. Its main ingredients are: honey, almond, sugar and eggs. But now you can find other flavours, like chocolate or fruits.

On December 31st, at 12.00 p.m...

we eat twelve grapes to celebrate the new year.

To celebrate the new year...

some grown-ups drink sweet cider, typical of Asturias. But it’s not for children.

And we learnt the composition of our typical turrón

Eimear, our language assistant, from Sligo in Ireland, told us about their traditions. We asked her about Christmas decorations, typical food and about the Epiphany...

But we learnt how do Irish people celebrate Christmas, as well.

...what it was shocking... Irish people don’t receive presents like us from the Wise Men. We learnt a lot about our culture and our friend’s traditions.
