POSITION DESCRIPTION – Child Care Educator OSHC
REPORTS TO: Coordinator, Outside School Hours Care
GRADE/AWARD/LEVEL: Children's Services Award Level 2

PROGRAM: Outside School Hours Care
WORKING WITH CHILDREN: Clearance required, child related role
PURPOSE
The role of the Child Care Educator in Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) is to assist the Coordinator in providing a quality program for children in Before and After School Care and in Vacation Care. This includes assisting to safely take children to school in the mornings and collect them in the afternoons. The Child Care Educator must also organise snacks, assist in planning a program of experiences, help to ensure children’s safety and maintain high levels of supervision.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assist the Coordinator to plan, implement and evaluate the program of experiences by:
Identifying experiences that are of interest to children and appropriate to the OSHC environment
Setting up the environment with resources, equipment and activities
Interacting with children and joining in with play experiences
Helping to evaluate the way in which children participate in experiences and to use this evaluation to plan other experiences
Helping to document activities and experiences
2. Develop a positive and supportive relationship with children by:
Treating all children with dignity and respect
Allowing children to make choices and decisions about what happens in OSHC
Helping children to solve problems and play positively with their peers
Assisting children with their personal care needs as appropriate to their ability and level of development
3. Help maintain a safe and hygienic environment by:
Helping children to keep safe through high levels of supervision and maintenance of the environment

Keeping the area clean and hygienic and carrying out tasks to do so as required by the Coordinator
Removing dangerous items from the environment and reporting maintenance tasks to the Coordinator
Keeping the area tidy and free of hazards
4. Establish and maintain good relationships with families by:
Treating all parents with dignity and respect
Communicating positively with parents about their children.
Keeping parents informed about their children’s participation in the program
Discussing with the Coordinator any concerns about children before discussing with parents.
5. Develop a collaborative relationship with colleagues by:
Being willing to participate in relevant meetings and training courses
Communicating with them in a respectful manner
Sharing relevant information about the children and families
Being committed to the service Philosophy and the Mission and Values of CatholicCare
Supporting the Coordinator to implement the standards contained in the National Quality Framework for outside school hours care
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This role has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE
Essential:
Some previous experience working with young children
Understanding of the needs of children in a group care setting
Ability to form positive relationships with children and engage with them in play experiences
Ability to communicate positively with parents and colleagues
