them got talking to me as well.
Almost everyone had a story to
tell, either about themselves, a
friend or someone in the family
who had struggled with mental
health problems, most often
with anxiety or depression,
these being the two most
common conditions.
Come along to St Andrew’s Hall
on the evening of Thursday 18
October, 7.30 for 7.45pm for
‘One Man, One Dog, One
Coastline’ when I’ll be talking
about some of the highs, lows
and challenges of walking fifteen
miles every day, including living
in a campervan with a muddy
dog through the worst of the
winter weather and the logistical
challenge of returning to the
campervan after each day’s walk.
I’ll also be speaking about my
experience of talking openly
about mental health to
individuals, groups, the press
and on the radio. The fittest
springer spaniel in England will
be there as well!
In the meantime, more details of
the walk can be found at

and the walk diary is at

Stuart Jessop
Local resident Stuart Jessop reports
back on his recent 2,600-mile
charity walk round England to raise
awareness of mental health.
Most of us have dreams for our
retirement, perhaps a world
cruise or maybe moving from
Chesterton to a pretty cottage
by the seaside. Walking has long
been an important part of my
life and my retirement dream
was to undertake a serious long
distance walk. However, thanks
to my wife Kate’s support I was
able to fulfill my dream on a
sabbatical from my teaching job,
rather than wait ing for
retirement. In October 2011 I
set off from Tower Bridge in
London with Poppy, our
springer spaniel, and a group of
well-wishers. Over the next
eight months Poppy and I
walked 2,600 miles around
England, coast and borders, and
returned successfully to Tower
Bridge in June this year.
Bouts of depression have been a
constant companion since my
teenage years and walking has
been one of my ways of dealing
with the bleakness and despair
that they bring. By talking openly
about my own experiences the
walk became part of a campaign
that all of the major mental
health charities are running to
try to reduce the stigma
associated with talking about
mental health. We also raised
funds for two mental health
charities, SANE and Anxiety UK,
with over £12K being donated
so far.
When I started the walk I knew
about the statistic that one in
four people will suffer from a
diagnosable mental health
condition at some point in their
lives. But now I know what that
statistic really means. Lots of
people stopped to talk to the
dog along the way, and many of

Chesterton Festival 2012 rain made another fleeting visit,
but thankfully it didn’t make
much of a difference to the
crowds or dampen the mood.
In St Andrew's Church, the

there were magic tricks and
wood turning, jazz and football,
books and plants, and that’s to

This year's Festival started on
the evening of Friday 29 June
with a great performance from
several young people's bands at
Brown's Field Youth and
Community Centre. Food was
provided by Cantab Catering in
the shape of fantastic burgers
and hot dogs. We had many
people dancing during the
evening, including our own
councillor Ian Manning (if you
don’t believe this, see the photo
above...)
On the Saturday, around 3,000
people attended the Fun Day on
Pye's Rec. In the morning, stall-
holders had a refreshing shower
as rain fell to greet them, but it
was short-lived and everyone
managed to dry off for the start
of the Festival at 1pm,
announced by St Andrew's bell
ringers. The Festival was
officially opened by Deputy

I ring up an old friend after
years of no contact. I visit a
housebound parishioner for the
first time in months. In both
cases I feel distinctly nervous
and fear the accusatory line,
‘Where have you been all this
time?’ But usually it’s not like
that, but rather a smile and a
warm greeting. They are rather
more generous than I might
have been. They make me feel
as if they are pleased to see me
(perhaps they are?) and make
me feel so welcome. If I’d
known that’s what it would be
like I would never have put it off
for so long.
And then I start thinking:
perhaps that’s what it’s like for
people who are wondering
about coming back to church
after a bit of an absence. I
wouldn’t know because in my
job I don’t get the chance to do
that.... Perhaps people feel a
little guilty about coming back,
or embarrassed, worried if they
are noticed (or ignored).
For the past few years the
national church has publicised
the last Sunday in September as
Back to Church Sunday.
Churches around the country
have been geared up to
welcome people back to church
– but not to overdo it with too
much song-and-dance and too
much spotlight on those dipping
their toes back into church life.
The idea is to induce neither
guilt nor embarrassment.
Last year 77,000 people were
courageous enough to go back
to church on the last Sunday in
September, 20 people joining
the regular congregation at each
church that was participating.
Perhaps you have been
wondering about going back to
church. You may feel a little
nervous about it – like me
making my phone call or visit.
Or you may never have been to
church, at least not on a regular
Sunday. Back to Church Sunday
is a good day to take the plunge
– this year it’s on Sunday 30
September. The main services
at St Andrew’s and St George’s
are at 10am; there is a Harvest
F e s t i v a l a t Ches t e r t on
Methodist Church at 11am. We
promise you a welcome – and
that you can leave again without
signing anything, committing to
anything or volunteering for
anything.
Some of you may be interested
in a week-before-back-to-
Church-Sunday service at St
Andrew’s.... Whilst some
people stop coming to church
because they have simply lost
the habit, others stop because
they have lost their faith. Radio
4 listeners may have heard the
recent series by Richard
Holloway, once Bishop of
Edinburgh but now a self-
professed ‘honest doubter’.
We expect faith to be
questioned by militant atheists
such as Richard Dawkins, but
perhaps the other Richard’s
doubts are more undermining: if
even a bishop can lose his
religion...
I must confess that I have a lot
of sympathy with Richard H.
He is a deeply humane person
who asks searching questions
that many of us in the church
duck or hide away from. But I
don’t think we need follow the
same road as the former bishop;
I still think there’s plenty of
space in the Christian tradition
for hard questions and satisfying
– if not conclusive – answers. I
will be preaching about this on
Sunday 23 September at 10am,
under the rather wordy title,
‘Losing my religion? Richard
Holloway, doubt and what
might be left to believe in.’ If
you can’t be there the text will
be on the St Andrew’s website:
www.standrews-chesterton.org.

News from the Churches St Andrew’s Church, Church Street Members of the youth choir
spent a happy weekend in July
at Ringsfield Hall, a residential
‘EcoCentre’ in Suffolk.
Our Junior Youth Choir
rehearses every Friday during
term-time from 6.15 to 7.15pm
and sings every 1st and 3rd
Sunday at 10am. It is open to
boys and girls from the age of 7, provided that they have a
reasonable ability to read
English and can concentrate in
rehearsals and services.
It provides an excellent musical
training, and we have a great
deal of fun and excitement, with
a full social programme. It does
require a fair degree of
commitment and regularity
from parents and children, but
it is designed to fit in with
normal family life and not to
make excessive demands on
children’s (or parents’) time.
Highlights generally include: working towards gaining the
RSCM ribbons; singing at an old
people’s home; various fund-
raising events; a Christmas
pantomime trip; and the choir
weekend away in July.

this started when I was very
young observing the working of

people.

Chesterton Parents’ Group
Calling all mums and dads!
Are you the parent of an under-five
child in Chesterton? Chesterton
Parents Group is a group of
neighbourhood parents who meet
once a month to plan and run
children’s activities. We would like
more parents to share ideas on
launching new events and classes.
Looking after young children can be
very isolating, so we try to offer free-
of-charge and low cost activities that
allow local parents and children to
get to know each other.
Our weekly music group,
Little Music Makers, brings
together more than 50
families a week. The class
encourages tots to learn new
songs and offers parents a
friendly and sociable get-
together.
We also run a free clothing
swap based on a point system
that allows donations to be
recouped at a later date. For
the last two winters the
forum ran Saturday soft play,
encouraging physical activity and
allowing parents a chance to play
with their kids in a fun social
environment.
Groups are very supportive and
informal, and during forum meetings
there is a crèche run in the same
room.
If you would like to find out more,
please call Chesterton Children’s
Centre which supports our group
on 729081.
