Fire Extinguisher Classification Symbols

• Class A – used to extinguish flames on ordinary combustibles (wood, cloth, paper)

• Class B – used to extinguish flames on liquids (liquids, grease, gases)

• Class C – electrical equipment (things you plug in to the wall)

• Class D – fires involving metals (magnesium, titanium)

NFPA Chemical Hazard Labels• The National Fire Protection Association has developed a

color coded, numerical system for indicating hazards of chemicals.

• Diamond symbol is divided into 4 types of hazards:– Health Hazards (blue)– Flammability Hazards (red)– Reactivity Hazards (yellow)– Special Hazards (white)

• Levels of hazard (0-4)– 0 is not hazardous, 4 is extremely

hazardous

MSDS

• Material Safety Data Sheets – provide more detailed information regarding chemical safety– Chemical Composition (what’s it made of?)– Hazards– First Aid & Exposure– Storage
