Chemical Bonding

Three Types of Chemical Bonds

• Covalent Bond

• Ionic Bond

• Metallic Bond

Covalent Bond

• Form between atoms of a non-metal and a non-metal

• Valence electrons are shared to form a bond from an electron pair (one from each atom)

• Can form single, double, or triple bonds

Ionic Bond

• Ionic bonds form between a metal and a non-metal

atom

• Valence electrons are transferred from the cation

(metal) to the anion (non-metal)

• No actual bond is formed, but the atoms are held

together by electrostatic forces (+/-)

Metallic Bond

• “Sea of electrons”

• Analogous to Thomson’s plum pudding

• Very slow movement

Lewis Dot Structure

• Lewis structures (also known as Lewis dot diagrams) are diagrams that show the bonding between atoms of a molecule and the lone pairs of electrons that may exist in the molecule.

• Follow the Octet Rule and the Duet Rule

• Let’s Practice

Models of Covalent/Molecular Compounds

3D Model

• Draw a space filling model or a ball and stick

model for your covalently bonded molecule

• Include a Lewis Dot Structure

• Include the identification of the Electron Domains

• Fill up the entire paper, use color (no pencil)

Review (1)

• List three types of chemical bonding

• What are the substances that make up each type of

bond

• What is a positively charge ion called? A negatively

charged ion?

• Draw the Lewis Dot Structure for NH3

Schedule Today

• FRIDAY - 11/13 Pep Rally Schedule

• 1st period 8:50 – 9:20

• 2nd period 9:25 – 10:35

• Release for pep rally – 10:35

• 3rd - 5th normal bell schedule

Review (2)

• Draw the Lewis Dot Structure and identify the

electron domains for the following compounds:

• CO2

• CO

• HBr

• NH3
