CHELSEA BULLY PREVENTION

PROGRAM

2013 - 2014

BULLYING IS…

There is an imbalance of power (an older

student picking on a younger student, a

larger child intimidating a smaller child, or a

group of kids targeting one child)

BULLYING IS…

Behaviors that are targeted and repeated

over time (daily or regularly throughout

the week, with the intent to hurt

someone physically or emotionally)

BULLYING IS…

The act itself was a violation of school

rules (threatening, physical aggression,

ongoing name calling, etc)

NOT ALL UNPLEASANT SITUATIONS ARE BULLYING

Remember every unpleasant interaction in school is not necessarily Bullying. Some

situations require school intervention, but do not rise to the

level of true Bullying. For example…

NOT ALL UNPLEASANT SITUATIONS ARE BULLYING

Any one time experience or behaviors

that happen for a short period of

time are often not bullying, although

they may be a violation of another

school rule.

NOT ALL UNPLEASANT SITUATIONS ARE BULLYING

Conflicts between friends may require

adult intervention, but are typically

not bullying in nature unless they

become extreme or carry on for a

long period of time in which there is

a clear victim and aggressor.

NOT ALL UNPLEASANT SITUATIONS ARE BULLYING

When two students are in conflict with one

another and participate somewhat

equally in the inappropriate behavior,

this is not a bullying situation.

NOT ALL UNPLEASANT SITUATIONS ARE BULLYING

Bullying is not aggressive rough play.

Students may get in a conflict over a

game at recess that escalated to

excessive rough play, but this is not

necessarily Bullying. It can be a

disciplinary offense depending on the

circumstances

Bully referral @ www.fsd157c.org

TATTLING VS. TELLING

Tattling is when: The

only reason you tell

a teacher is to get

the other student in

trouble

Telling is when: You tell

the teacher because

you need help and do

not want the behavior

to continue

WHAT CAN YOU DO IF YOU SEE BULLYING???

Get help for the target by telling adults and

then being willing to be honest

witnesses if the bully says he or she

didn’t do it.

WHAT CAN YOU DO???

Be a friend to the target, either while it’s

happening by getting the target away

from the bully

Or later by sitting or walking with the target

to help them connect with other

students.

WHAT CAN YOU DO???

Bystanders can also refuse to go along with

rumors, excluding, and other kinds of

bullying. There is no need to confront the

bully (though if he or she is a good friend of

yours you could tell the bully to cut it out).

The main thing is not to spread the rumor

any farther or otherwise join in the bullying.

THINGS TO REMEMBER… Bullying and unpleasant situations are

different.

We do not bully other students at Chelsea

There are many ways to report bullying

Know the difference between Tattling and Telling

If you see bullying be a positive bystander.
