Hello and welcome to the Webinar Understanding The Virtual STEM Center and My Future Hawaii. My name is Charles Souza and I am a STEM resource teacher with the State of Hawaii. Today I will be sharing features of the Virtual STEM Center, explaining how it can be used to support students in STEM education and help prepare them for STEM college and career opportunities. Later you will hear from a training team at My Future Hawaii who will share an overview of the program. The program is housed on the internet and provides college and career planning tools for students as well as adult learners.

Let’s begin with a little background information about the Hawaii STEM Learning Strategy and Network that I am a part of. The Network strrives to improve and advance the character of STEM education to prepare all students for the opportunities and challenges in our changing world.
• STEM education integrates the study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics by using scientific inquiry and engineering design as unifying themes.
• It emphasizes innovation and the development of problem-solving, critical thinking and collaboration skills.

First bullet is common. Most people understand this. The second bullet is often overlooked, but equally important.
• Transform and revitalize the teaching and learning of science and mathematics in grades K-12 by purposefully integrating technology and engineering with science and mathematics.
• Significantly increase the number of public school graduates who pursue or enter STEM-related careers or attain two- or four-year degrees in STEM fields.
• Increase STEM-foundational academic achievement and STEM learning opportunities for all students.
• Cultivate partnerships to expand and strengthen STEM education.

One of the tools that we use to reach the goals stated on the previous slide is the STEM Portal. Uses Edmodo as its platform Two groups, STEM Hawaii for Teachers and Virtual STEM Center for students Both groups create opportunities to network with other teachers, students and community and industry partners
