For a fuller understanding of the words of Christ, the Jewish modes of thought, which he used in illustration, require to be briefly explained. It was a common belief, that in the day of the Messiah, redeemed Israel would be gathered to a great feast, together with the patriarchs and heroes of the Jewish faith. Gentiles could have no part in that feast. When our Lord consigned the unbelieving to “outer darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth”, he once more used Jewish language, only with the opposite application of it. Gehinnom ... lay beyond the “mountains of darkness”. It was to a place of darkness, to which, in the day of the Lord, the Gentiles would be consigned. To use Rabbinic terms (the Gentiles) were “children of Gehinnom”, but Israel the “children of the Kingdom”, “royal children”, “children of God”, “children of the upper chamber” and “of the world to come”.

The Synagog
ue
It may be said that the temple was the place of worship and sacrifice; the Synagogue was the place of teaching and instruction. The Synagogue was by far the more influential. If a man had a new message to preach, the Synagogue was the obvious place to preach it. When the people met at the Synagogue service it was open to the Ruler of the Synagogue to call on any competent person to give the address, and the exposition. There was no professional ministry whatsoever. That is why Jesus was able to open his campaign in the Synagogues. To the Jews, the most sacred thing in the world was The Torah, The Law. It contains direction and guidance for all life which must be brought out. To give this study and to supply this development a class of scholars arose. These scholars are the Scribes, the experts in the law.But no scribe ever gave a decision on his own. If he made a statement he would buttress it with this, that and the next citation or quotation from the great legal masters of the past. The last thing he ever gave was an independent judgement.
The Gospel of Mark, Wm Barclay p22-24
Sabbath
Miracles
The Sabbath and the SynagogueTherefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them . . . For the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. Jn 9:16, 22 * Miracles performed in the Capernaum Synagogue on the sabbath

The Border
The Riband of BlueBid the children of Israel that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments . . . and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a riband of blue ... that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD and do them: and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes. Num 15:38-39
The PhariseesBut all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders.
Mt 23:5
The Promise of the MessiahUnto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteous-ness appear with healing in his wings (border). Mal 4:2
The LegacyWhen they were gone over, they came to the land of Gennesaret. And the men of that place ... besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
Mt 14:34-36
The Rich Young Ruler
But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness , hath not attained to the law of righteousness.Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were, by works of law. For they stumbled at the stumbling stone; As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumbling stone, and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly* with thy God.

Rich Young Ruler
Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth an rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth not rust doth corrup, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.
Mt 6:19-20
Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches ... That they do good and be rich in good works ...Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may hold on eternal life.

Nicodemus
Nicodemus Think not that I am come to send peace on
the earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.
Mt 10:34-36
ThePharise
es
During the difficult days that followed (the return from Babylon) when the Jewish hold on the land was tenuous, and any thought of idolatry had been knocked out of the Jewish mind, a sect arose which developed into the Pharisees. To them, a strict observance of the Torah was everything. They furthered the introduction of the synagogue, seeing it as a means of reducing the influence of the priests. By the first century A.D. there were hundreds of synagogues in the city of Jerusalem. The Pharisees’ grip on the minds of the people was almost complete. Yet there were unorthodox Jews such as the Saducees, the Essenes and others, who resented the power of the Pharisees. To increase their power over the people the Pharisees extended the law, made traditions and additions which became “burdens grievous to be borne”.
