Characteristics

Lead is a shiny, silvery metal. It is

very dense and relatively soft for a

metal. Like most metals, it is both

ductile and malleable so it can be

formed into sheets and wires.(2)

Lead is quite stable, but will react

with oxygen in the air. (3)

Lead is very dense so it blocks alpha and beta radiation. This

is why your dentist covers your chest in a lead vest when

x-raying your teeth. (1)
