The Art Experience

Understanding art takes more than just looking at art

Looking - and knowing how to look - are essential

it takes truly seeing - or perceiving the object - to gain understanding

Examining art works

All works created by artists are made to be viewed

Some are created with an added purpose; they are meant to be used.

Fine art - is “art for art’s sake”– to communicate the artists feelings or ideas

Applied art is usually found in our everyday lives– Either made by hand or with machines

Artists and Ideas

Blank sheet of paper is a challenge Greeks prayed to Muses to inspire them

– Muses are special goddesses

they built shrines to honor the Muses

Where do ideas come from?

The world of myths and legends– some artists borrow ideas from famous works

of literature

The world of imagination– dreams and fantasies– artists have the ability to turn dreams and even

nightmares into the illusion of reality

Their own hearts and minds– personal beliefs, or feelings are often a source

of ideas for art

Real-world events and people– people and events often turn up in art

Ideas commissioned by employers– artists are hired by individuals or companies to

create works of art

Artists of the past– artists learn and build on the work of artists

who came before them– artists might base work directly on earlier

pieces
