Chapter Annual Report 2009

The SPIE-NITW student chapter is pleased to have successfully completed the year 2009 in a satisfying manner. The chapter members were involved in a lot of activities that will be presented in this annual report prepared for the year 2009. Various activities like organizing special lectures, taking up R&D activities, presenting research papers by some of the members, developing new experiments in photonics, arranging lab visits to the other students of the institution, and near by degree colleges and schools, etc.

The SPIE- NITW student chapter was actively participated in the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of National Institute of Technology, Warangal during 2009. Student chapter has been fully involved in the Alumni function organized by the Department of Physics and presented the over all activities of the chapter to the old students of Optics and Photonics. It invited experts from the Alumni and arranged special lectures and to share their experiences in the present day Optics and Photonics fields. It also showed the various developments in Photonics labs and various ongoing R&D and Consultancy projects in the dept.

The workshop on Photonics for engineering applications was a success for the participation of more students this year and it was overwhelming. Taking optics and Photonics to the students from various universities and technical institutions in a manner simple and lucid with a lot of visual aids is what optics workshop strives to achieve. The Experimental setups were set and live demonstrations by the SPIE student members are another venture that received a commendable response.

DAY 2

In the first session of day 2 of the workshop, we had a nice lecture on “laser technology” by Dr. R. L. N. Sai Prasad from the Dept. of Physics, National Institute of Technology, Warangal. He is one of the researcher who is specialized and working in the interdisciplinary subjects of optics and electronics.

SESSION 3

He gave a lecture on basic working principle of laser, population inversion principle in two level, three level and four level lasing medium with demonstrations, Nd-YAG Laser, He-Ne gas laser, types of lasers, ruby laser, Carbon dioxide laser, TEA Nitrogen Laser, laser diodes and applications of lasers.

Dr. R. L. N. Sai Prasad presenting the talk

In the post tea session of day 2, we had one of our alumni Mr. P. Venkata Ramana with us. He worked in various industries like Philips - Singapore, Agilent - Singapore, Institute of micro-electronics - Singapore, and various R&D Organisations of Government of India like DRDL & RCI . Presently he is working in Vasavi College of Enggineering,, Hyderabad as Associate Professor. He is the industry consultant for Vasavi College and TIFAC CORE.
