CELLULAR

ORGANELLESCells are the smallest units of life.

That means individual cells are alive. http://goo.gl/lFWYN

Although cells are microscopic (really small), you can think of them as being their own living organism.

SINGLE-CELLED

ORGANISMS

Here are three examples of organisms that are only made of ONE cell

Amoeba

Paramecium

In the same way that humans are made up of organs (heart, lungs, kidneys) cells are made up of organelles (nucleus, cytoplasm, ribosomes).

The cell membrane is present around ALL cells.

The cell membrane allows only certain substances to enter and leave (gateway)

CELL

MEMBRANE

The cell membrane is like a fence – it lets some things in and keeps some things out.

The nucleus controls all of the functions of the cell (control center).

NUCLEUS

The nucleus is like the “brain” of the cell.http://goo.gl/lFWYN

The nuclear envelope surrounds the nucleus.

The nuclear envelope allows substances to enter and leave the nucleus.

NUCLEARENVELOPE

The nuclear envelope is like a window screen – lets air in and keeps bugs out.

Chromatin contains the instructions for all cell activities – genetic material (located in the nucleus).

Chromatin directs cell activities (made of DNA).

CHROMATIN

The nucleolus, located in the nucleus, is where ribosomes are made.

(Ribosomes produce proteins).

NUCLEOLUS

http://goo.gl/lFWYN

The cytoplasm is a jelly-like material in which the parts of the cell constantly move.

The cytoplasm is the area outside the nucleus in which the organelles “float” around.

CYTOPLASM

http://goo.gl/lFWYN

Mitochondria are the "powerhouses" of cells.

Mitochondria produce most of the energy of a cell.

MITOCHONDRIA

The mitochondria are like the engines of a car.

The endoplasmic reticulum is like a series of "tunnels" that transport materials through the cytoplasm.

ENDOPLASMIC

RETICULUM

http://goo.gl/lFWYN

Ribosomes are tiny structures in the cytoplasm where proteins are made (the little dark specks).

RIBOSOMES

http://goo.gl/lFWYN

The golgi body packages and moves proteins outside the cell.

GOLGI BODY

The golgi body is like the post office – receives, packages, and ships mail.

Green organelles which capture energy from sunlight and use it to make food for the cell - photosynthesis.

CHLOROPLASTS

Chloroplasts are like food factories – places where food is produced (made).

Vacuoles (mostly found in plant cells) store water and nutrients for the cell.

VACUOLES

A vacuole is like a pantry or refrigerator – a place to store water and nutrients.

Lysosomes contain digestive enzymes that break down food particles and waste.
