THEY SAY THAT FOR A WOMAN TO HOLD THE CORNERS OF HER MOUTH JUST SLIGHTLY RAISED MEANT THAT SHE WAS ELEGANT AND PEOPLE HAVE WRITTEN FOR YEARS SINCE ABOUT MONA LISA’S ENIGMATIC SMILE

• This painting is titled The Virgin of the Rocks – and both this, and the Mona Lisa are famous images from da Vinci – particularly for the use of a hazy light in the background – which is called sfumato in Italian

This drawing is titled Head of a Young Woman – and it is another example of the realistic style Da Vinci used

Artemisia’s father was a well known artist, and he recognized that his eldest daughter also had the gift. Her mother passed away when she was only 12, so her father began tutoring her in the arts. She had a difficult time in the male dominated field of art, but continued to create works based on Biblical stories, and some of which reflected her own life.
