Catalyst• What are the components that affect the rate

at which something dissolves?• If I increase the temperature will a solute

dissolve more slowly or more quickly?

What Is This Reaction?Fe2O3 + 2 Al 2 Fe + Al2O3

If I have 2 mole of thermite, how do I determine the number of moles of Fe

produced?

Lecture 4.4 – Moles to Moles

Today’s Learning Targets• LT 4.5 – I can convert from moles of one compound

to moles of another compound using the mole ratio from a balanced chemical reaction.

What is a mole ratio?

I. The Importance of Balanced Reactions

• We have been balancing chemical reactions so that we can use them in these calculations.

• Without a balanced reaction, we CANNOT do the calculations that we use in stoichiometry.

II. Mole Ratios• The coefficients in a balanced equation

represent the moles of each substance.• These coefficients can be used as a conversion

factor known as a mole ratio• Mole ratios allow for us to convert between

moles of two substances

Mole Ratio for Mg to Mg3N2

3Mg + N2 Mg3N2

Class Example

• For the following reaction: NaCl + CaO Na2O + CaCl2

• Write the mole ratio of NaCl to CaCl2?

Table Talk

• For the following reaction:_____Fe + ____CuSO4 ____Cu + ___Fe2(SO4)3

• Write the mole ratio of Fe to Cu?

How do we convert between moles of two substances?

I. Mole to Mole Conversion Factor

• Our conversion factor for converting moles to moles is:

MOLE RATIO

Class Example• For the following chemical reaction of the

airbag in our car: NaN3 (s) Na (s) + N2 (g)

If you have 6 moles of NaN3, how many moles of Na will this reaction produce?

Table Talk• For the following reaction:

N2O5 + H2O NH4OH + O2

• If you have 5 moles of N2O5 determine the number of moles of NH4OH do you get?

White Board Problems

Question 1

• For the following reaction: 2HCl + K2SO3 2KCl + H2SO3

You react 7 moles of HCl with excess K2SO3. Determine the number of moles of H2SO3 that will be produced in this reaction.

Question 2

• For the following reaction:CS2 + 2 O2 C + 2 SO2

You have 4 moles of CS2, how many moles of SO2 are produced in this reaction?

Question 3

• If you end up with 272 grams of NH3 in the following reaction:

3 NH4SCN + FeCl3 3 NH3(g) + 3 HCl + Fe(SCN)3

How many moles of FeCl3 were used to produce this amount of NH3?

Question 4

• For the following reaction: 2KClO3 2KCl + 3O2

How many moles of O2 will be produced if you start with 7 moles of KClO3?

Question 5

• You are performing the following chemical reaction in the lab:

N2 + 3H2 2NH3

• You have 5 moles of N2 and excess H2. How many grams of NH3 will you produce once the reaction is produced?
