HLB ValuesThe hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) is an expression of the relative simultaneous attraction of a surfactant for water and oil, which is a comparison of the hydrophilic to the lipophilic portion of the surfactant molecule. HLB values of nonionic surfactants range from around 1 to 20.
The miscibility of a surfactant in water is a guide to its HLB value. Generally, those with low HLB values are oil soluble and those with HLB values greater than 10 are water soluble.
The following table lists properties of surfactants at various HLB values.
When selecting a surfactant using the HLB system it is necessary to consider its chemical structure, although there is a range of emulsifiers that are HLB independent for ease of formulation. In most applications a blend of surfactants rather than a single surfactant may be more effective. The HLB values list overleaf is intended for chemists who are acquainted with this system. Assistance can be given if additional information is required.
