Carlsberg UK

Carlsberg UK Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of

the Carlsberg Group and is the UK’s fourth largest

brewer. Amongst the 16 sites are two breweries based

in Northampton and Leeds.

Following discussions with a number of consultancies,

energyTEAM was chosen to procure their electricity for

them. Paul Garratt has been Carlsberg UK’s account

Manager from the outset and has been looking after

Carlsberg UK’s electricity needs for the last 10 years.

Carlsberg UK were purchasing their electricity on a

fixed contract for the first five years of working with

energyTEAM. However, as Carlsberg UK expanded,

their procurement department was left with less time

to discuss and agree on a price for their electricity

contracts, resulting in higher energy prices.

Therefore, Carlsberg UK required energyTEAM to find

them a better option of purchasing energy rather than

sign a 12 month contract at a time that was not

advantageous.

Around the time that Carlsberg UK decided that a

single purchase 12 month contract was no longer

suited to their purchasing needs, suppliers were

becoming more interested in offering energy contracts

where multiple purchases could be made over the

duration of the contract.

energyTEAM was one of the consultancies that took

advantage of this new offering and helped the supplier

develop this new product with Carlsberg’s needs in

mind.

otherwise may have missed.

energyTEAM organised Carlsberg UK’s procurement

arrangements and developed an updated budget

which was built around the benchmark set by

energyTEAM. These figures were used by Carlsberg

UK’s finance department to plan their energy budget

for the year.

energyTEAM aided Carlsberg UK in the transition

from single purchase electricity contracts to multiple

purchase energy contracts.

Carlsberg UK have been on the

same type of multiple purchase

contracts with British Energy since

they first signed in 2005 and by

using this method of energy

procurement, combined savings against budget on the

Leeds and Northampton breweries were in excess of

£980,000 in one year alone.
