Were looking eastward.
CARR 4 is a little different tan te pre-

We are still a poster m agazine, we are still
independent, and we are still focussing on
topics were oter car magazines call it
quits because its too far awa, too futu-
ristic. But tat is ust wat we are inte-
rested in, after all. We want to sow wat
opportunities car design reall offers, ow
beautiful innovative design can be.
Tis issue is a premiere. It is te first
issue of CARR wit a specific focus we
call tis issue Eastern Promises. Car design
from Eastern Europe.
We ave Arsen Kostromin, a oung Russian
designer, wo is particularl interesting
not ust because e is one of te biggest
oung talents in is countr, but because
e plaed an important role in making Dacia

outWestArsen, ou grew up in Balasci-ca, a satellite cit in te sub-urbs of Moscow, in a time wentere were not man Lamborginis,BMWs, or oter fanc Western carsdriving around in Russia. how didou get into car design? honestlspeaking, I never paid an atten-
tion to car design until te da I
graduated from secondar scool.
Tat afternoon, I was plaing
soccer wit m buddies near m
apartment building, and one of te
gus said tat e wanted to stud
car design. Until tat moment, I
ad not even known tat tis was
someting ou could stud. I oined
im at te universit on te first

totall amazing seeing te
campus, meeting designers, seeing
sketces and students presen-
tation boards. I decided tere and
ten to stud car d esign too. So I
took drawing classes.

te last ting I tougt about was
design, drawing, or art.

your parents must be proud of ou
now. M parents still do not under-
stand wat I am actuall doing.
Te are rater confused b m
work. Wen te look at m sket-
ces, te dont reall get wat
te see. I am te onl one from m
famil wo is into drawing and
design.
But ou must ave at least sket-
ced sometimes before ou decided
to stud car design. Well, as a kid
I once drew an arm truck on m
wall at ome. It was a pen drawing,
ver roug looking. But tis is one
of te ver few moments I remember
mself drawing.
Wat was te first car ou reall
loved for its design? I guess an
old Moskvic 412. I must ave been
around si ears old back ten. M
uncle bougt one it was a tpical
famil car in Russia, a small
sedan, produced from te 60s to te
80s. I loved tat car. But I dont
remember if tis love reall was
about te design or ust because it
was a car.
Wat were our favorite cars wen
ou were a kid? I collected cards
wit pictures of cars, wic ou
got as a giveawa in packs of a
Russian cewing gum brand called
Turbo. Te ad tese small cards
in ever pack even i nternational
cars. Ever kid wanted to ave te
full collection. In te end, I got
about 700 different cards wit
pictures of te most beautiful cars
and concepts from around te world.
Prett soon, I decided I liked
American cars from te 60s to te
80s best. And classic Italian cars,
of course. Lamborgini! Ferrari! I
still tink te are etraordina-
ril beautiful.
you are from Russia, ou worked a
long time in Bucarest for Dacia
and Renault, and ou will be
working for Volkswagen in German
soon. Do ou tink tat te future
of car design is in Eastern Europ e?
I guess te future of car design is
simpl were te mone is. So it
migt be in Russia, but mabe even
in Cina, Korea, or India. Te eco-
nom decides and te designers
will follow.
Frankl, Bucarest is not reall
known as a ot spot for car desig-
ners. Wat was our eperience
working tere? I liked it a lot. I
wasnt surprised b te cit wen I
first arrived tere. An Eastern
European cit wit a Communist
background, more or less like te
places I saw in m cildood in
Russia. A poor and toug place.
People tr to get troug life
someow. But te ting is tat struggling cities give ou a fres
perspective on life because ou can see all kinds of people on te
streets from poor gps grandfaters to twent-ear-old gus driving
around in new Ferraris. Its a place of contrasts. But its real, tis is
ow te world reall is. And b te wa, te cit represented te people
we were designing cars for prett well.
Do ou tink t at designers from Russia ave a different view of cars
tan colleagues from, sa, Munic? Obviousl tere is a uge love for
sports cars and SUVs in our ome countr rigt now Of course, we are
different. We are a generation of cange. Born in te Soviet Union, we
grew up in New Russia. Going from total protection, we were trown into
a ver roug period. Te 90s were reall a ard ti me for us in Russia
we were poor and grew up witout an governmental support. And tis
situation made ou dream of cange. First and foremost individual cange.
And tese dreams make ou figt for our future. I am not sure if m
colleagues from Munic ever ad an eperience like I ave ad. But I
wouldnt sa in term s of design and sketcing t at Russian designers are
so ver different from Western ones. Te big difference is rater tat
te are read to figt for teir proects.

you also sa tat our life ad
an impact on our creative output.
Sure. It does ave an impact. We
ave different inspirations. For
instance, in our cildood, te
Russian arm was reall an essen-
tial part of our lives. We saw a lot
of different arm veicles on te
streets, plaed wit scale models
of tanks in kindergarten, wen
oter kids in Europe plaed wit
Barbies and to Ferraris, I guess.
But at te end of te da, te rules
of design rigt now are actuall
more important tan inspirations
from te past.
Do ou tink tat te regional
markets for cars are ver diffe-
rent, tat people in German want
different cars tan people in te
USA or in Russia? yes. Tese
markets are different indeed. Its
a question of te general standard
of living in a countr. In Russia,
te discrepanc between ric and
poor people is uge. And te ones
wo ave mone want to drive te
best and most e pensive veicles in
te world ust to separate tem-
selves from te background tat
te came from. A BMW for a German
is a nice and practical car, big
enoug for an entire fam il of four
or five, good to drive, safe. Its
like a Dacia for Romanians or Autovaz
for Russians, noting special. But
a BMW for Russians? Its a luur
car tat none of our neigbors can
afford to bu. Its pure luur.
Prestige. So I am sure tat for te
foreseeable future, customers in
Moscow sowrooms will be asking for
te most epensive cars because
te dont want to be like ever-
bod else.
Mabe ou sould focus on sports
cars ten and work for Ferrari,
Lamborgini, or Marussia. Well,
tere are so man talented desig-
ners on te market rigt now wo
know ow to design proper sports
cars. I dont tink I am anting
special in tis area.
Do ou tink tat tere is a special tradition of Russian car design?
yes. I tink tere is an emotional aspect in our designs. Wen we draw
cars, we tink intensel about colors, perspective, and te caracter and
stle of te car. Tis is our tradition. We are epressive and em otional
in our sketcing.
Coming back to our last ob at Dacia, wasnt it strange to alwas take
into consideration tat a Dacia ad to be ceap? No, not at all. Te
ceaper a car as to be, te more interesting it is. you figt for small
details, wic ou dont even care about wen ou draw a Porsce or a
Lamborgini. And I actuall believe tat one da Dacia will beat Renault.
W will te? To me, teir p ositioning is muc stronger and clearer.
Te brand migt be rater ceap rigt now, but in ten ears te will be
strong enoug to produce a more epensive range of models.
how do ou work? Do ou still sketc or doodle b and sometimes? Most
of te time I use m Wacom Intuos3 A4 tablet, wic I prefer to all oter
Wacom products. M favorite software is a 3D program ca lled Alias Design
Studio, wic also features a painting application tat I reall
like. But es, I sometimes sketc b and, but I do so less and less, for
reasons of time a nd qualit.
how will car design develop in te net 20 ears? Wat will be te
maor trends? Cmon gus, veicles will not be able to fl. Its planet
Eart, not Star Wars. So cars will look more or less te same as we see
tem now on te streets. Wit one big difference even more safet. Tere
will be new materials and tec nolog developed for cars, but mainl for
safet reasons. Te tecnical packages will cange, we will see iger
oods to protect pedestrians. So all in all, cars will be less attractive
tan te are now.
Wat kind of car do ou drive? Well to tell ou te trut, I still
do not ave a drivers license. It sounds funn, I know. I design
veicles, but I ave no idea ow to drive tem.

yes tat is eactl wat it is.
s ard to imagine te German
tomotive industr witout Zwickau.
Cars ave been built ere for more t an 100 ears and it is still a big
part of te regions liveliood toda. Tere is a VW plant in town and
man automative suppliers. More tan 100,000 people in te region work in
te industr. Automobile istor was written in Zwickau te istor of
Audi, Porsce and Volkswagen. And te stor of te Trabant, nicknamed
Trabi probabl te oddest creation of German automotive engineering.
From 1957 to 1991, te Tra bi was manufactured in Zwickau b Sacsenring.
After a iatus of 20 ears its possible tat it will be m anufactured ere
again as te Trabant nT, te new Traba nt, developed b a former Volks-
wagen designer.
Its a spring-like da in te middle of januar as we drive b Zwickau.
A was upriver, in te suburb of Wilkau-haslau, we turn into an industrial
area, to IndiKar; a compan for prototping and veicle
armouring. In oter words, primaril limousines for eads of state,
sports cars for ot spots and war zones, anting tat te customer wants.
In one of te buildings tere is a 50-meter-long reinforced concrete
bo, in wic te veicle bodies are sot at to determine if te can
reall witstand an attack. here we meet Nils Poscwatta. he sows us an
empt, spotless wareouse nearb, 20,000 square feet. We can start
production ere soon, e sas. If everting goes according to plan.
And te plan sounds daring. Poscwatta, on te oter and, doesnt look
daring at all. Te tall man in is earl 30s is an earnest fellow. An
automobile designer wos a doer, not a dreamer. he as sort, gelled air
and big ands tat look like e can tackle anting. And e loves cars
especiall fast, sport ones. Te idea of building a new Trabi grabbed
im and didnt let go. A welldesigned Trabi wit an electric motor a
modern, compact cit car. A car tat will fit rigt in wit te new
Beetle, te Mini, or te Fiat 500.
Teres not muc in te wareouse et. Actuall, teres noting e cept

si monts, togeter wit is col-
league Sven heu bner, 28, te model-
ling master. Once t e sin, brigt

of its temporar electric motor,
its clear tat tis isnt ust
a gimmick. Te new Trabant is a
vision to reckon wit. But we wont
know for several monts weter or
not te car will become realit.
Poscwatta would like to build
6,000 veicles a ear, 30,000 in
five ears. In 2013, all te big
manufacturers will be entering te
market wit teir first electric
models. Economists are estimating
tat about 10 million e-veicles
could be sold worldwide b 2020. A
uge new market is being created.
And two questions present tem-

of te fall of 1989. jubilant peo-
ple, driving across te border in
teir Trabis. People leaning out of
car windows and waving. Te Trabant
is not a smbol of weakness, but of
unit, of o. A positive smbol
tat gives ou a ead start wen
ou want to position a brand.
But wasnt te Trabant a ope-
lessl slapdas product from a
tecnical point of view?
Mabe. But did ou ever see an
old Fiat 500?
But wasnt te Fiats design well
tougt out at least?
Tats debatable. Sure, tecni-
call, te Trabant was about as far
as ou can get from a masterpiece.
But its design reall did ave a
couple of successful elements te
smoot alignment between te ood
and te eadligts and te
pronounced soulder line connec-
ting to te rear ligts were simpl
awesome. Te ood was sculpted
nicel, and te elliptical stle of
te rear ligts was attractive. Of
course, tere was noting dnamic
about te old model. Te falling
line of te rear weel arces pro-
duced volume precisel were tere
sould never be an from a design
point of view. Tats w te cars
rear alwas sagged. But te soul-
der line was nice and streamlined,
te front face was striking, te
ligts round and unique. Tese were
all elements I could work wit.
Neverteless, wont te Trabant
automaticall be associated wit a
fallen dictatorsip?
Not if te new car i mpresses its
audience. Toda, a Dacia isnt a
12
nostalgic product tat wants to romanticize Ceaucescu. But its a
successful brand tat everone was making fun of ust 15 ears ago. And
everone knows te istor of Skoda and Volkswagen.
Score for Poscwatta.
Te automobile industr is facing te biggest canges it as ever
encountered. Te transformation from te com bustion engine to electronic
propulsion. Are tere engineers and craftsmen wo can react more quickl
and ave better ideas in times like tese? Is a concept like te Trabant
nT arriving at te rigt moment? Mabe. Te onl itc is tat te
preliminar development pase costs a bout 15 million euros. Tat gets ou
a prototpe tat is tecnicall mature. And development for mass produc-
tion costs anoter 60 million euros at least. Tese are uge amounts, but
onl a tent of te figure tat te development of a new model b a maor
automobile manufacturer costs.
We believe in te new Trabant, te manager of IndiKar, Ronald
Gerscewski, sas. We will implement tis proect. just te recognition
tat weve gained up to now due to tis concept is incredible. In
addition to IndiKar, herpa, a manufacturer of miniature models, is also
involved in te proect. Te compan Trabant nT Gmbh was establised in

cember 2010. Te rigts to te name were acquired a wile ago. Te onl
ing tats missing is an investor wo believes in te proect. An
vestor big enoug to invest millions.
In an case, te fascination wit getting a new Trabi on te road s is
ormous. And not ust in te eastern part of Germ an. We could alread
ve delivered 5,000 units witout doing an marketing at all, sas
ls Poscwatta. Tere were blind orders from Canada and France. Tis
s te case even b ack in 2007, wen te idea of a new Trabi was presen-
d for te ver first time, and a rater unsuccessful 1:10 model
s developed.
Tere was lots of pe, even back ten, Nils Poscwatta eplains,
ut te design was terrible and te concept was panned witin te
dustr. Tat was wen e got into te proect and declared tat a good
ea needs good design. At te time, Poscwatta was still working as a
signer at Volkswagen. Sortl tereafter, e ad a coice: a secure ob
t one of te most important brands in Europe or a new start wit
meting e felt passionate about even if it seemed like nostalgia for
e bad old das. he decided to go wit passion.
Si monts later, te presented teir stud at te IAA at a tin
ot, squeezed in between te giants ADAC and Opel. Probabl te
allest boot tat te IAA ad ever se en, sas Poscwatta toda. Wat
doesnt sa is tat tis boot was ust as bus as te reall big ones.
Te reason, of course, could be te brands name. After all, te
abant is bot te butt of okes and a cult obect in German. But part
te reason was te design tat creates a armonious relationsip
tween interior and eterior as few models do. Te ellipse a carac-
ristic stle element from te old Trabants rear ligts is a detail
at pops up repeatedl in Poscwattas design. Te ve icles face as a
gative front, a rarit in modern car design. Tis is someting tat

stead of a ver flat windsield like most of todas serial models, te
abant nT as a ver steep one. Te effect is a passenger compartment
t an ecellent interior feel for a car of tis class. We are
veloping a cit car, were te aerod namics are prett irrelevant, te
signer eplains. More ead room and a b etter interior feel were muc
re important for me.
Does e want to ump on te retro
bandwagon of te past few ears
wit tis design? No, we dont
want to bring back someting old.
We wanted to do someting comple-
tel new, Poscwatta sas. But, of
course, I cant old it against
anone if te find te car someow

Poscwatta gets into te car,

and drives out of te all. Weter
te Trabant will be driving

M goal was to create a snowmobile for racing on special snow race-
tracks, an equivalent to Formula On e ust for snow sports. Two drivers
one beind te weel and te oter as navigator - are seated in
cockpits. M snowmobiles laout is as mmetrical in order to give it more
emotion and dnamics, wile its sape was influenced b modern F1 race
cars and te Russian figter et Sukoi, wit its swept-forward wing
(SU-47). Te basis of m new snowmobile is a structure in te sape of
te letter x, were te main elements of te construction te bracket,
te engine, and te central drive track - are fastened. All of tis is
intended to ensure optimal ale load distribution and acceleration. Te
result is a fun veicle for plunging into uge masses of snow, a mode of
transportation for adverse winter conditions, a lifestle obect for
todas freeskiers and snowboarders, or a fast-moving macine for unters
or scientists I dont mind. But in m opinion, todas snowmobiles look
wa too eav, witout d emonstrating emotion or agilit.
