North America Gas & Power (NAGP) is a dynamic, fast-paced and
material business operating in the North American energy market.
Since 1999, this natural gas, power, natural gas liquids (NGL),
liquied natural gas (LNG) and emissions trading and marketing
business has sustained over 50% annual growth and is now
recognized as the number-one gas marketer in North America.
More than 900 employees are located in the main ofces in Houston
and Calgary, along with more than 20 satellite ofces deployed
across the US and Canada. NAGP’s business model is based
on the growth of our customer-facing businesses underpinned by
BP’s natural gas supply position, a web of interconnected assets
and world-class trading capabilities.
BP’s business is about nding, producing and
marketing the natural energy resources on
which the modern world depends. Powered
by innovative thinking and collective energy of
nearly 100,000 people working in 100 different
countries, BP is committed to energizing the
world without compromising the planet.

North America Gas & Power offers
an early development program to college
graduates that is aimed at developing
high-quality trade, origination and
optimization employees.
As the energy trading business continues to grow, we need
ambitious individuals with a passion for the energy industry that
display the analytic and risk tolerance we found to be indicators
of success in NAGP.
Following an individual assessment process, participants
join the program for approximately three years, called the
Challenge Program. This development path is designed to ensure
that new employees gain the commercial knowledge and skills
to be successful for the future. Most of the Challengers have
a degree in nance or economics, but the best candidates are
those with strong analytic capability and a career interest in
the energy trading business.
Challenge Program Details
The program features:
Job Rotations between trading
analyst, marketing and origination,
scheduling and other key functions
occurring every 12 months, with
rotations being tailored to the
individual. Some rotations may
involve a one-year assignment
in another location.
Training and Development
offerings are available throughout
the rst three years, with some
programs, such as a three-and-a-half
day new-hire induction specically
geared to Challengers.
Individual Support is provided by
your line manager, mentor, buddy
and various networks— all of
whom are ready and able to provide
both technical and career support.
Evaluation of the Challenger’s skills
and competencies occurs midway
through the 2nd year of the programthrough a formalized assessment,
as well as periodic team leader
performance and skill reviews.
“I really appreciated the
ability to learn from three
different jobs in three
years to nd out what
job I would like to do
and what I am best at.
My experience in the
challenger program took
me through almost all
of the regions of North
America natural gas:
East to West, nancial
to physical, risk to
trading, from Houston
to Calgary and back.”

For NAGP, the expectation of the Challenge
program is a group of employees who are
prepared to move directly into front ofce
roles, directly out of the Challenge program.
Following graduation from the program, individuals have the opportunity
to bid on jobs in trading, marketing and origination, and optimization
within NAGP as well as other IST business units. Past Challengers have
typically landed in all of these areas, although NAGP’s expectation
is that more than 50% of the graduating Challengers will end up as
traders. Near graduation from the program, Challengers will attend a
trading or marketing assessment prior to accepting P&L responsibility
in either of these areas.
