How to use Canvas for self-scheduled online exams

The Download Process

Login to Canvas using your NetIDand password

Find Law School Exams for the Current Term

Choose the current exam period from your dashboard:

If you don’t see the correct exam term in the dashboard, click Courses > All Courses and then choose the current exam period from the list.

Review the Syllabus Page

Review General Exam Instructions

This is the day the exam period ends

This is the time the exam period ends.

Take note of the Date and Time shown below. The date and time represent the end of the exam period. You will not be able to upload an exam answer file after this day/time. In the example below, exams will end on 05/04/2017 at 5pm.

Choose the Exam You Would Like To Start

Choose your exam from the list under Course Summary.

Start the ExamBe sure to read the instructions.

Your exam time begins when you click the blue “Take the Quiz” button.

Click here to access your exam file download link. Clicking here will start your exam timer.

Download Your Exam & Monitor Your Time

Click the link to download your exam file.

The timer should NOT be relied on as it has been inaccurate during testing. You may click the blue Hide link to remove the timer from view.

This is your start time, you

are responsible for monitoring

your time.

Log Out of Canvas

• We suggest you log out of Canvas while you write.

• When ready, log back in and resume your exam. Canvas will keep track of all the time that elapsed while you were offline.– If you did not log out, refresh your browser

before attempting to upload/submit your answer.

• Even if Canvas Support suggests you should contact your professor, you must not do so. You must instead contact the Registrar at:law-registrar@law.northwestern.edu.

Your exam answer must be written and saved in one of the following acceptable file formats:• Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power

Point)• Adobe Acrobat (.pdf)• Notepad (.txt)• Html/Html5

Saving your Answer

• All answer files should be named Class Title Anonymous Exam Number, so for example, Civil Procedure 9999, without any special characters.

The Upload Process

Resume ExamIf you logged out of Canvas, log back in, choose your exam, and click Resume Quiz.

If you did not log out of Canvas, Refresh your browser before continuing to the next step.

Ignore the Quiz Saved MessageCanvas will display a “Quiz saved at…” message. Ignore this message; Canvas cannot autosaveyour Exam.

Upload Your Answer FileClick “Choose a File” to upload your exam answer file:

Navigate to the file you saved, select it, and click Open:

Submit Your ExamMake sure you chose the correct file. If you need to choose a different file, click the gray X to the right of the file name and try again.

NOTE: You may need to refresh your browser after clicking the gray X.

You must click the blue Submit Quiz button to end your exam. This is the only way to send your file for grading and to ensure you will not be marked late.

Clicking this symbol will remove your file if you need to choose a different file to upload.

Click SUBMIT QUIZ to end your exam and submit your answer file.

This means your file is ready to submit, but it has not yet been submitted. Your timer is still running!

Make Sure Your File Uploaded!• If you clicked Submit Quiz, but

did not properly upload a file, Canvas will display this error.

• CLICK CANCEL and you will be returned to the upload screen.

• DO NOT click ok or your exam will be submitted without an answer file.

After UploadAfter you upload your answer file, you will see this screen. Please note:

1. Your time used will be reflected under “Time” in the Submission Details as well as under the Attempt History.

2. You are permitted only 1 attempt at each exam; this is reflected under Attempt History.

3. The “Score” will show 0 out of 1. Ignore this; Canvas will not be used for any part of the grading process.

4. Ignore the “Correct answers are hidden” message. This does not apply to our exam process.

5. After submitting your answer, verify the correct file was uploaded & submitted by viewing the file name under Question 1. DO NOT click on or download the file after submitting it; doing so is a violation of the honor code.

A Note Concerning Upload/Submit Accuracy

• If you submit your exam without a file, or with the wrong file:– Please email your answer file to law-

registrar@law.northwestern.edu immediately.
