Roisin Murphy.

Ex-Moloko lead singer who flys solo this Summerat Sonár in Barcelona.

Introduction.

Upfront.

Aidan Kelly. I’ve been a fan of Aidan’s work for many a year, mostly by default though as he’s a longtimecollaborator of the brilliant graphic designer PeterReddy, aka Redman. If you’ve been in Dublin forthe last 10 years you can’t have escaped this guy’swork as it adorns everything from flyers (POD,Choice Cuts, Electric City, etc.) to album covers(Turn, Gemma Hayes, etc.) and a lot morebesides. Everyone else bought the soundtrack itseems, Aidan has the motion picture and stills.

Anyhoo, seems about time then that he got hisown site up and running so get yourself roundto www.aidan-kelly.com and you won’t bedisappointed. The work is beautiful and the siteworks perfectly to show it off. Better still, you canbuy limited edition prints off if so no more excusesfor the flock wallpaper looking so bare.

Also, watch out for future issues of Candy coz Igot exclusive unseen images which are well worthwaiting for... Just form an orderly queue.

Adidas. In 1969 Adi Dassler designed the first Superstar(The ‘Shelltoe’) for the use of basketball players tobetter their game through better cushioning andadded comfort. 35 years on and the Superstar isworn by all kinds of people all over the world, notjust ball players.

So what better way to celebrate this that enlist thetalents of some of the world’s most recogniseddesigners (Disney, Andy Warhol, ProjectPlayground, Undefeated, etc.) and musicians(Run Dmc, Ian Brown, Red Hot Chili Peppers,Missy Elliot, etc.) to have had a crack (with somevarying degrees of success) on 35 limited editionversions of one of the most enduring sports shoedesigns of all time.

What’s more, why not get the Adidas fanatics torun the streets of 7 cities worldwide chasinggolden tickets Willy Wonka style for the ultimateSuperstar set, limited to 300 pairs worldwide

Amos. Amos Toys set up in 2002 with James Jarvis, SofiaPrantera and Russell Waterman. James hadpreviously been illustrating for the likes of TheFace magazine, the Holmes clothes label (fromSlam City Skates) and The Idler aswell asdesigning toys and graphics for cult fashion brandSilas, beginning with the now legendary Martinfigure, released back in 1998. Along with BountyHunter in Japan, Silas unwittingly became one ofthe pioneers of the soft vinyl designer toyrevolution. Martin was unleashed on anunsuspecting world and the work of James Jarvisreached a whole new audience.

For the following 5 years, Silas continued topander to popular demand and release James'designs under both the Silas banner and as part ofhis World of Pain project. The Silas figures wereMartin, Evil Martin and Bubba, Tattoo Me Keithand The Bearded Prophet. The WoP figures werethe Policeman and Lars. All of these figures havebecome very collectable and some trade handsfor exorbitant sums on eBay.

King Ken Grey.

The original, there has also been an orangevariant and also a rarer albino version.Summer 2005 sees a flock version released.

Because of the success of these figures, and tostop Mr. Jarvis selling his soul to The Man (he alsoproduced the set of Juvenille Delinquents for theSony Capsule Toy project), James and the twodirectors of Silas decided to create a newcompany. Amos was set up to independentlyproduce and distribute James' figures; to take hiswork out of a "fashion" context and open up hisdesigns to a wider audience; and to develop newprojects and offer new opportunities to otherartists whom they had worked with. So far Amoshas released the successful In-Crowd series andKing Ken, all designed by James.

Future plans include a new James Jarvis project, beginning with the release of part one of a comicadventure titled 'Vortigern's Machine'. Also thereare plans to release a comic and vinyl figuresdesigned by Will Sweeney, another Silascollaborator. 'Tales from Green Fuzz' and Helmutthe Hot Dog Man. Examples of all these follow onthe following pages. There’s also plans for aflocked version of King Ken and the In-Crowd 10will be an homage to wrestling but I ain’t got picsof them yet.

Unlike theircontemporaries, Moulty's Psychedelic Popmusic was in no way drug induced andthey most definitely were not "Turned On".In fact, in their groundbreaking conceptLP "The Thoroughly Interesting Life of Mr.Jones" they introduced the countercounter-culture phrase "Application,

A cutting edge study, chronicling a groupof everyday kids who roam the sub-urban/semi-rural mean streets of a fictionaltown and are dramatically sucked into apsychedelic vortex of fantasy adventure.Their travels feature run-ins with a talkingdog and an angry gorilla called King Ken,and they manage to answer one of life'smodern philosophical conundrums in theprocess. All this and a slide machine. Staytuned for the complete Vortigern's

Asbestos. Over the last couple of years you may havenoticed the emergence of a new art form on thestreets of the world, including Dublin. Taking it’ssensibilities from graffiti ‘street art’ has become avalid and important form of expression ofcreativity. Leading the charge in Dublin areAsbestos and Frankenstyles (mentioned later). These two guys have taken the streets as theirgallery space and worked within it accordingly.

Asbestos himself has gained worldwide notorietyfor his Lost posters aswell as his other projects. He’s exhibited across the world, both officially andunofficially, and also is at the heart of the globalcommunity having recently devised a Christmasswap shop affair, where artists all over the worldsigned up to do a piece which then got sent toanother artist picked at random by Asbestos.

Check out the results of this project and also allthe other amazing work at the deadlywww.theartofasbestos.com

D.A.D.D.Y. Forget your Dom&Nic’s, Spike Jonze’s andShynola’s for a moment, it’s time to give someprops to the Dublin based productionpowerhouse that is D.A.D.D.Y. (Design AnimationDesign Design Yay!) who do some of the bestvideos anywhere at the moment. Their attentionto detail, original concepts and execution have tobe seen and heard to be believed.

With amazing work for Bell X1, Autamata, DavidKitt, Halite and their own music / performanceproject Warlords Of Pez already in the can aswellsome amazing commercials you really shouldn’tbe reading this but rather should be over atwww.teamdaddy.com with some popcorn, M&Msawaiting the feast of film sitting their waiting foryour perusal. Also, watch out for the short filmsseries on TV3 which they did the titles for aswellas featuring work, check www.tv3.ie for info.

Roll on the DVD, the petition starts here.

Festivals. Woohoo!

Summer’s coming so grab the lotion, the hamsandwiches and the blanket, we’re going out intothe countryside for lots of six packs, rugs androck’n’rolling hills. Yep, the big gigs and festivalsare acoming so best we plan in advance...

With more choice than you can shake a big stick at,all aiming for your wallet, best you get organised, get down the Credit Union and get begging.

Not only are U2 bringing the noise to Croker for3, yes 3, nights but Coldplay come to Marlay Park,The Black Eyed Peas, Faithless and (ahem) PaddyCasey play Dublin Castle (Heineken Green EnergyFestival) and Eminem and his Detroit crew roll into rise some hassle at the castle at Slane.

Add to these the 3 big festivals that roll into townover the coming months, all with line-ups to diefor, it’s time to sell a kidney and get stuck in...

Here’s to 5-0 for why we should go...

Oh yeah, speaking of sun lotion, just thought I’dinclude Sonar in Barcelona and rub it in.

Electric Picnic.Stradbally House, Laois.September 3rd & 4th.www.electricpicnic.ie

Billed as ‘the boutique festival’ last year’s sell outsaw 15,000 people descend on Stradbally Housefor a big day out filled with fun and frolics.Despite a few teething problems the gig wasamazing. From the sun-drenched performances ofArrested Development, Super Furry Animals andSoulwax to the full-on frenzy that was Mylo, EricMorillo and the local crews of Backlash andBodytonic it was a big day out with a bigheadache the next morning. Oh, and GrooveArmada were brilliant to ease you into the night!

This year promises even more of the same withthe site extended to hold 25,000 punters over twodays, there’s even camping this year for thoseinclined. This year also sees the inclusion of acinema, a larger food market and the premier ofthe ‘silent disco’, a concept launching at thisyear’s Glastonbury, where the festivalgoers get apair of wireless headphones each which get sentlive mixed music throughout the night. A brilliantconcept considering the rules that concertsgenerally have to shutdown their soundsystems toreduce public noise pollution in the wee hours.

Sonár 2005.Barcelona, Spain.June 16th - 18th.

Miss Kittin.

Playing for the third year in a rowso the claws will be well and truly out.Meeeeeeeeoooowwww!!!

Picture a music festival held in a venue not unlikethe National Museum by day and in a venue thesize of 3 Point Depot’s by night (1/3 outdoors).Add to this blistering Summer sun, a relaxedknowledgable crowd and the World’s finest djs, musicians and image makers and you’re gettingclose to the annual spectacle that is the Sonárfestival held in Barcelona. Add to this cheap beerand cava and looks like we’ve got a fun-in-the-sunparty on your hands!!

Now in it’s twelfth year this year’s festival sees ahuge move away from the electronica and hip-hop bias that have been quite prevalent over thelast few years towards what they term ‘organic’music (see below). Whatever they call it, you canbe assured that this festival is going to rock withSoulwax, LCD Soundsystem, Le Tigre, The Battlesand many more letting rip over the 3 days in June.More information at www.sonar.es

Sonar 2005 : Press Release

Over the last few years, many acts involving the experimentalsound discourse of electronic music have made use of more or lessconventional instruments to realize their aims. Portable computers,or laptops, which predominated in the past, have in numerouscases been replaced by guitars, basses, drums and traditionalinstruments on the stage.

In this edition of Sónar, one finds a notable return to the organicand physical in the creation of live music. An impressive cluster ofbands with a focus on electronic music, be it a means or an end, will perform on the different stages of the festival. Suchunorthodox acts as LCD Soundsystem, Le Tigre, Soulwax, Hood,Radian, Mouse On Mars, Efterklang, The Battles and To RococoRot seek to diminish the space between acoustic, electronic andpopular music.

Traditional instrumentation is also evident in the alliance betweenthe Brazilian group Hurtmold and American cornet player RobMazurek, as well as in the sound of two very different bands thatrevive, in their own special way, a kind of avant-garde pop of the1980s: the veteran and respected Durutti Column and Norwegiannewcomer The Beautiful People.

Frankenstyles. As mentioned earlier the street art scene isthriving here in Dublin and this is helped in nosmall way by the efforts of Frankenstyles.Whether it’s his sticker based graphics which findtheir homes in strategically placed areas roundtown or his wooden sculptures this guy’s work isboth conceptual and clever. While you’reprobably aware of his work you might as well popdown to www.frankenstyles.com and see whatelse he’s been up...

Frankenstyles ‘Clouds’.

‘Pipe’, ‘Woodhead 1’ & ‘Woodhead 2’.All by Frankenstyles.

Non-Format. If you buy rather than nick music (good workfella!) and if you’re into the alternative (weirdybeardy some would say) scene chances areyou’ve come across and probably bought some ofthe work of the these two UK based designers.

Famed for their work for the alternative musicbible The Wire, which they’ve recently given updesigning after 5 years, their creative output isconsistently second to none.

The Redneck Manifesto/ Johnny Kelly.

I must admit I only bought the Redneck’s latestalbum ‘I Am Brazil’ relatively recently but thispurchase was sealed once I saw the amazinganimation made to promote the ‘We still got it’track. Done by designer Johnny Kelly as a collegeproject this piece is simply sublime. It seems I’mnot the only person who thinks so either as itwent on to be exhibited at the world renownedDOTMOV festival which is held in associationwith the mighty Shift magazine.

Here’s what the people (Diesel VirtualDepartment) who selected it had to say about it:“The motivation for selecting this as our choicewas for a combination of reasons. The piecebenefits from a strong and simple concept andwell thought out story. Putting the viewer in theshoes of a designer charged with designing thealbum cover for a band. The chosen visual style isinteresting and relevant. Reinterpreting the styleof cut out paper collage techniques using digitalanimation, employed in such a way that thetechniques and technology used remainstransparent, aiding the design, rather thanoverpowering it. The design is strong, bold andconfident, with excellent use of colour andcomposition. The animation related well to themusic and was full of fun elements and a twistedsense of humour which is something that theDiesel creative team really appreciate. The pieceboth captures and maintains the viewers attentionuntil the end of the animation, and succeeds inclearly communicating the intended story.”

Pony. One of Ireland’s most prolific creative exports,Niall Sweeney left Ireland (and a lecturer stint inDun Laoghaire) a couple of years ago to furtherhis education in London Town. Since then he hasgraduated and also set up his own company, Pony. But that wasn’t before he had left an indeliblemark on the capital and the visual culture of thisisland.

Whether it was his involvement in the legendaryElevator, H.A.M. or Powderbubble club nights orhis design work for D1 recording and it’s DublinElectronic Arts Festival (D/E/A/F/), the nowdefunct Suffolk Street clothing emporiumMakullas, CODE magazine, Alternative MissIreland, Emigre magazine, The George and muchmore besides, you cannot have been touched insome way by his vast portfolio of work...
