Camfil Farr Solution System – Life Cycle Cost (LCC) EU – Functions in LCC
Functions within software application (LCC EU)(Here four (4) functions are available)
21
The current available functions in LCC EU - February 2010 are:
1) NormalThe normal function is the standard function. With this functionality you can calculate the LCC for up to three stage filter solutions. You can analyse different filters of standard sizes (typically 1/1 , ¾ - , ½ -sizes). Only one size at a time can be compared.
2) Advance CalculationAdvance function gives opportunity to calculate LCC for a real air handling unit (AHU). Very often a AHU have different sized filters in the same filter bank. Here the calculations are made on the complete filter bank designed by you. More inputs required than for normal mode.
3) ESFSIn certain Ventilation systems the fan is of “constant speed”- type. This means that when replacing the filters in such system the fan needs to be adjusted in order to have the same airflow. This function calculate the new fan speed depending on your filter selection.
4) Particulate matterThis functionality gives you access to outdoor environments based on PM10 – values. If optimization of the life time is a key this is somewhat more accurate than the ordinary outdoor environments used.
5) ExpertAccess to all functions in the LCC software (Design system pressure drops - additional pressure drops from equipment such as : coolers, air intakes, heat exchangers), and much more. Here you are a real expert on LCC analysis.

Camfil Farr Solution SystemV. LCC Calculations – EU version
There are different type of calculations (different functions available) that can be made in the CFSS – LCC application. The example that follows is using the standard setting “Normal”.
With this functionality you can calculate the LCC for one-, two- or three-stage filter solutions. You can analyse different filters of standard sizes (typically 1/1 , ¾ - , ½ - sizes). Only one size per filter stage can be compared.

Under running conditions you must select the important general parameters for this calculation case: Total filter stage, Exchange interval,The criteria for exchange, air flow etc..
Camfil Farr Solution System – Life Cycle Cost (LCC) EU – Running Condition
General parameters
32
Nor
mal
Camfil Farr Solution System – Life Cycle Cost (LCC) EU – Running Condition
Total filter stage
Here you may choose up to three filter stages. You must later define a filter type for each filter step you activate, see “AHU-design” and “Solutions to compare”
Filter lifetime Criteria
You must decide weather you will replace filters based on running time or final pressure drop .
Exchange interval
The replacement interval –based on time (hours) or final pressure drop , in this example a final pressure drop of 250 Pa is used.
33
Nor
mal
Camfil Farr Solution System – Life Cycle Cost (LCC) EU – Running Condition
Return Air
If you have a return air system you must select how much of the total airflow is returned (% of total airflow). If the return air is larger than zero (0) – the software calculates with the dust coming from the indoor environment. Your selection of indoor environment will then affect the calculation.
Outdoor environment
Estimation on how “dusty” the outdoor environment is. This can be selected by Outdoor environment (EU) or Particulate Matter option (special version). The outdoor environment will affect how fast the filter will increase in pressure drop during operation.
Total System Air Flow
Here you put in the total airflow over the filter(s) in the system you want to calculate. Observe that the energy consumption is proportional to the airflow – higher airflow will give a higher absolute energy cost (consumption). Here, in this example we use 34000 m3/h
34
Nor
mal
Camfil Farr Solution System – Life Cycle Cost (LCC) EU – Running Condition
Fan System Operating
This is defining how many hours per year the AHU system is used. Observe that the LCC calculation is made on a constant airflow during the whole period.
LCC period
The LCC period defines the time span for the LCC calculation. By changing this value some results may be affected.
For example; if cleaning of system needs to be done after 8 years, and the LCC period is set to 5 years – no cleaning cost will be displayed. If LCC period is set to 10 years – cleaning cost will be displayed.
Indoor environment
Here you put in the estimation of the cleanliness of the indoor air (dust concentration). This value is only used if Return airis > 0
35
Nor
mal
Camfil Farr Solution System – Life Cycle Cost (LCC) EU – Running Condition
Fan Efficiency
This is a very important parameter that determine how energy efficient the fan is. Here all losses such as transmission, heat etc. shall be considered. Normal values for Total fan efficiency is around 30-40%.
Typical CO 2 emissions
The software is calculating the carbon footprint of the filter installation. The default value is an average for the European electricity market year 2007 (600g/KWh). For USA the average is about 610g/KWh.

Camfil Farr Solution System – Life Cycle Cost (LCC) EU – Costs/Rates
The input of price increases, energy cost (electricity), duct cleaning etc. needs to be done in order to make a complete LCC analysis. Any cost can be set to zero if it is to be neglected.
45
Nor
mal
Camfil Farr Solution System – Life Cycle Cost (LCC) EU – Costs/Rates
Energy cost is the price per KWh
Duct cleaning is the cost for cleaning ducts. This cost appear typically in one stage filtration with low efficient filters. Choice of longer LCC period (see running conditions) is increasing the risk of cleaning. Also with increasing pollution (dirty outdoor environment) the need for cleaning increases.
The duct cleaning is expressed as cost/m2 of ducts downstream the last filter stage.
Equipment cleaning is the cost for cleaning dirty equipment (excluding ducts). This cost applies to f.ex heat exchangers, cooling coils or other equipment that can be more complicated and expensive to clean.
46
Nor
mal
Camfil Farr Solution System – Life Cycle Cost (LCC) EU – Costs/Rates
Labour Cost is the cost for exchanging (replacement of) filters. This is the total cost per filter exchange. The labour cost may be different for stage 1,2 and 3.
New hardware costis the cost for any initial cost needed to be implemented at the start of the period. It can for instance be new filter housing, weather protection or any other investment needed to secure the performance of the filters. The costs may differ between the solutions (old or new solution).
Waste handling is the cost for taking care of the used filters. Typically used filters are incinerated. The waste handling is all cost related to waste (fees, transport etc). The waste handling cost may be different for stage 1,2 and 3.
47
Nor
mal
Camfil Farr Solution System – Life Cycle Cost (LCC) EU – Costs/Rates
Cost increases and interest rate are determined by %/year. This is important when calculating present value of costs, see information about “present value calculation”

There are different type of calculations (different functions available) that can be made in the CFSS – LCC – application. The example that follows is using the ESFS function.
ESFS (Energy Saving Fan Speed) is a tool for adjusting the fan speed in order to maintain the designed airflow when replacing filters. This is needed when constant fan speed systems are used.
You can calculate the energy savings as well as the new estimated fan speed.

Input data for the current system can be modified
Outdoor Air - Dust level in the out door air.
The label of the outdoor air can be changed. However the program will calculate using the settings underRunning conditions
Current fan speed
The current fan speed is the constant fan speed that is used (designed for) for the system. This fan speed needs correction when filters are changed
Total system pressure drop
This is the total pressure drop for the system, including all equipment, ducts etc. This also includes the filters. This would be the (system designed) pressure drop for the system, connected to the current fan speed and the airflow.

This functionality gives you access to outdoor environments based on PM10 – values. If optimization of the life time is a key this is somewhat more accurate than the ordinary outdoor environments used.
Keep in mind that a high accuracy optimisation of an AHU is very difficult to make. Depending on the pollution (aerosol) and environmental conditions the pressure drop increase may vary from case to case. Often is reliable particle concentration data difficult to get. Even if good analysis equipment is used for particle concentration measurements there is always some degree of uncertainty in real life time predictions of air filters.
